Setting boundaries is how you weed out the bad apples and find incompatibilities before you even reach the point of exchanging vows. I was always told I'd scare people off by setting my boundaries too early, but I dated for the intent of marriage so I ignored that advice. My great grand parents met when they were 18 and they died at 93 yo and 96 yo, after 72 years of marriage. Even in their early 90's, they were showing so much affection and love to each other, they really were my favorite people and I aspire to find such a strong connection one day, and have a marriage as fufilling as theirs. Since he was an orphan and went from places to places my great grandmother's parents saw him as a "tramp" and they didn't accept their relationship. I agree with Destiny in that monogamous marriages have similar issues with entanglements and love fading. The biggest issue I see with open marriages, however, is that you invite intimacy from another person to your marriage which will very likely create a hostile environment and lead to a divorce. for instance, sure, you can still get robbed if you leave your house door lock but leaving it open will ultimately lead to disaster. At least with the former you are making an effort to keep what you value safe.

It's the problem with trying to "Have it all". the issue is sooner or later one party may find someone who does things better and it puts a strain on the relationship. There is a friendship aspect to marriage but it’s not all. My grandfather said marriage is 90% trust and 10% love (could be 70/30 I can’t remember). I think that’s pretty accurate. I would throw in friendship in the love part from my late grandfather since normal people love and care about friends

It sucks, and it can really hurt, but it was obvious to everyone, including himself on some level (even if he didn't want to admit it to himself), that this was likely eventually going to happen. For me, there is something paradoxical about an open relationship or an open marriage, as you cannot open and close a vow at the same time. For me, the people who run something like this are not in a position to make decisions, instead they want to keep everything open. They can't take responsibility either. I think this pseudo-term was only designed in order to be able to be on an equal footing with honestly loving couples and to also want to denounce them who have an intimate relationship or marriage where real love is at stake. For me, a relationship or a marriage is something special that you share with your partner and not with just anyone.
