@@Oopsy75254only if you consider a tiny clump of cells a person. Destiny has repeated his position multiple times, that pregnancy is the process of creating a person. So if the fetus develops enough that brain activity can be observed (20-24 weeks), he considers that a person so an abortion shouldn’t be allowed unless the mother’s life is in danger. The sentence "The child has the capacity to deploy consciousness, it just needs time to developt it" is so inherently contradictory that it's mindblowing that they keep insisting on it. How can the fetus have something, but at the same time it needs time to develop it? How do they not see the logical flaw? If we assume this makes sense, then it also is fine to say that as soon as you get in Engineering course, you are already an engineer, you just need some time to develop. Wow.
@skyootos7672
@skyootos7672 2 ай бұрын
@@KJJB12 Because, as per their argument, fetuses under 3 months old need time to develop the ability to deploy a counscious experience because they do not have it yet. The illogical part is assuming that, because they will eventually have something, that is the same as having it at any given moment. You are correct in saying that things like muscles, body, personality, etc, can be developed beyond their starting form, but I was talking about initial development, when the thing does not exist yet. For example, imagine you have a car without engine and wheels. You can't say it's a working car, at least not for the inteded purpose, even if the parts it's lacking will eventually be added. Once you add those two things, THEN it's a working car, but you can still keep adding other things to make it a better car, you can improve the engine, etc. Does this make sense to you?

@@KJJB12 That's like saying I can bench 400lbs you just have to give me 10 years to deploy it lol......... Like no I can't bench 400lbs, I COULD if I went to the gym for 10 years trained hard and took steroids and ate a bunch of protein. At the moment I can't bench 400lbs. At the moment that fetus can't think, it COULD think if given time to develop in the womb. That's how I see it.

"Age discrimination" is the weirdest term, when age literally starts at birth
@maya_gabriella
@maya_gabriella 2 ай бұрын
no that’s the only point that we can be sure of a number to assign them one since birth otherwise no one would have a birthday, because it would be impossible to decipher when they got conceived. human life begins at conception which is an irrefutable fact. therefore yes in the human concept of time that we have created it would make the baby their age+ the 6-10 months since they were conceived. although that is not we measure it.
@florianschmoldt8659
@florianschmoldt8659 2 ай бұрын
...Yes, we don't. You're shoving the goal post in very inappropriate places. Pro-life people move it in the complete opposite direction if they want to call someone "child murderer" instead of "zygote or embyro murderer" Loaded language. I get that. I personally think this wishful new definition of "age" confuses even most christians and you are arguing it with people who don't believe there is anyone to discriminate against to begin with. I respect your views and appreciate the answer but we have to find a reasonable middle when we use certain terms instead of making the other side look as bad as possible.
@maya_gabriella
@maya_gabriella 2 ай бұрын
@florianschmoldt8659 let me start by clarifying I am agnostic (more atheist) and that yes I use terms such as zygote and embryo, as they are scientific terms to describe stages of development in a baby so I would have no problem saying “human zygote or embryo murderer” because that is a human child merely in the earliest stages of life. The reason I may choose not to in the majority of the time, is because pro choicers use these terms to dehumanise the baby and use those words as a weapon to avoid the FACT that they are young human lives. I’m not moving anything in the opposite direction, I’m stating that in our society we have created that is how we measure age, (like many other human concepts that work to sustain a working organised society**, like the concept of TIME which is a human made construct which is what age is based on bc what does age mean without the concept of time. **bc let me repeat no one would ever have a “birthday” or perhaps “lifeday”, as in the moment their life began, not when they are born, exiting the birth canal) BUT For example in Korea they have a different system of measuring age as they start the ‘number of age’ beginning at conception, but since they have no clear day of when the baby was conceived they assign the new born baby as 1 years old when they come out, and that’s how it works for them which is only one example of this system being used. If it’s not age discrimination what is it? When do u think human life begins? Because if ur answer is any other answer than conception u are simply wrong there’s nothing else I can add to that, and the right to life is a human right , however for some reason in 67 countries we decide that the unborn just doesn’t count and we legalise the murder of them.
@florianschmoldt8659
@florianschmoldt8659 2 ай бұрын
 @maya_gabriella If someone asks when MY life began...honest answer: The day I was born. If you are sticking to "human life"...the collection of cells you are refering to are less complex than plants who could be labeled "alive" and definitely less complex than the animal you had on your sandwich. The only difference is your projection what that organism will become. Good on you being an atheist but it only makes sense if especially human cells are sacred by default and I can't see any good reason for that claim. Even if we casually say "I'm having a baby", there is a reason science seperates cells, zygotes, embryos from babies. Not to dehumanise but I don't like it if someone shoves a picture of a 8 month old baby in my face to emotionalize the discussion either. I'm german. We have 12weeks and if someone want's to argue it reaches into a questionable time frame, fair enough. I personally don't see much of a human to dehumanise up to 6 weeks. Back to the "age discrimination"...Even if I entertain the phrasing...what does it even mean? American humans have the right to own guns, cars, pron, alcohol. We restrict the access based on good reason and science. Or is it just age discrimination? There is a line that needs to drawn.
@satellitestargazer2770
@satellitestargazer2770 Ай бұрын
There is nothing wrong with age "discrimination." We deny rights to minors all the time. Children can't vote or drive in most cases. Because they lack maturity. Fetuses don't get the right to life because they lack a consciousness and autonomy.

What? Life support? There is a massive difference between life support in a medical setting and womans fricken body that was made for supporting the life of a growing/developing fetus. The fetus is developing as we speak and getting closer and closer every second to viability. Someone on life support in a hospital may be dying and beyond help. As someone that was part of a family decision to pull life support on my mom last year after she was unable to rally and restore organ function, that is unfortunately how it works sometimes. Right to the real facts of the matter. This particular point also proves the pro choice position as being more coherent because as soon as technology is available that allows a fetus to survive outside a womb at any point outside conception we will almost all decide it is no longer okay to abort the fetus because we have a way to keep it alive that doesn’t affect the bodily autonomy of the mother. No matter what you do with the pro lifer’s position they are trying to say your body is not your own in some way and society can decide when you become a slave or not.

This is the second debate I’ve watched recently (Cenk Ugyur being the other) in which Destiny is able to land on a middle point in a very polarizing issue, where he is able to concede certain points raised by his opponent (that do not disqualify his own argument), and in his doing so, the opponent(s) reactions illuminate the extremeness of their own views (who perceive ANY concession as weakness) and their unwillingness to meet at a viable solution in the middle. It’s really a battle between intellectual honesty and dishonesty, and I respect Destiny for being able to bring and maintain it in these debates where it’s often otherwise absent.

I'm obsessed with this video. It is like watching a 30 car pile-up on the highway in slow motion. I think the debate would have been more pleasant to watch if it was only Destiny and Lila. The other participant was basically going through the list of logic fallacies to demonstrate how not to debate. She did the ad hominem quite well (the "I'll treat you like one of my children" was quite a striking glimpse into her private life). A lot of people seemed to complain that the two women were interrupting, but to be fair, Destiny was doing the same thing. Although I would have done so too out of frustration. Kristan contributes absolutely nothing to this conversation. Lila and Destiny had some genuinely interesting exchanges (despite Lila and Kristan frequently interrupting), and Kristan made it her mission to bulldoze as many logical discussions as possible. I feel that she definitely set the tone for interruptions from the two women. I found myself cringing every time she began to speak, because she was unable to form a singular cogent argument or provide one constructive point in a four hour long conversation. Kristan is insufferable. Truly the bottom of the pro-life barrel.

This is largely true. I watched the whole thing. Lila and Destiny, imo, were both legitimately good faith arguers. I will even say that Destiny saying THEY were bad faith was wrong, it was only Kristan who was obnoxious and had cringey bad faith takes. Maybe he didn't want to pick sides or whatever. Kristan is better at arguing with college students with terrible arguments. Destiny is not that - and Lila was, to my surprise and delight(never heard of her before this, that I recall), willing and able to engage in the heat of battle - and I will even say held her own pretty damn well. Kristan should not have been there at all, and I hope Destiny takes Lila up on her offer to do her podcast; ideally without Kristan and just 1 on 1. She's (Kristan) not the bottom of the pro-life barrel. Trust me, there is worse. But she was WAY out of her league here. Destiny's arguments were coherent, consistent and reasonable - and Lila threw it back very well, and correctly attacked the few 'mirky' parts of his argument that even he conceded were not entirely the strongest. Destiny won by far - and Lila may have tied if Kristan wasn't there. I say this as a pro-life person myself.

1:19:30 Yeah that's EXACTLY WHY you cut elective abortions off at 20 weeks. Because in a few more weeks the fetus *might* have the capacity to feel pain. DUH. And there aren't a bunch of women or doctors wanting to do abortions even that late. In CA, 20 years ago, I had a diagnosis of intrauterine growth retardation, which meant I wasn't producing enough amniotic fluid to sustain the pregnancy and I had to rush, because of 20 wk limitations on abortions, to decide whether i continued an unviable pregnancy or had an abortion. And continuing unviable pregnancies poses a ton of risks to mom, one of the most common is infertility or death. I was prolife before this happened to me and I'm sad i lost my baby girl but I'm glad I grew to have empathy and realize i didn't know sht.

I love how people seem to think a human being can just magically have life because they can breathe air. And here’s a reason why time is crucial. If you go to a court, and you say someone did a crime against you. If you cannot tell them the specific date of when that happened, your case gets thrown out. Even if it’s a crime did happen. If you cannot say exactly what time that happened it’s done it’s thrown out.

But there are cases where you can't give an exact time on when something happened. Just like the puberty analogy Destiny brought up, you can't give an exact date on when puberty happens cuz it fluctuates between people, but you can still prove it happened.This is the case for developing consciousness between 20-24 weeks. Using the judicial system as an apology for your case meaning nothing without an exact date isn't logical because it's very evident nowadays how unfair/rigged the judicial system is.

@@cg12675 My comment said babies so no. Babies do not, in fact, get removed from the womb with an abortion. Even so. The hyperbole was everything after that.

@@cg12675Yes but it's bad faith to describe it that way. It is meant to paint him as a monster by illiciting emotion (from us)...
