Thank you for the video and the English subtitles. Super great drill and enjoyed seeing both Juria and Sensei Yagi work so well together on this.
I did 8 years of blocking at the dojo .It really hardens your bones .In a blocking routine one night at the dojo I broke my opposite partners arm with outside block .I also have a makiwara board concreted into my garage floor.I long since finished regular training ( I am 80 ) But gained my 3rd Brown belt under sensei Enoeda ,many years ago.I still have hard hands ,and hard arms .lol

ain't you suppose to block with muscle on your hand rather than bones?

@John. You should not broke his arm. Very sad.
@binnieb1732 жыл бұрын
@@AcheLone no. In Uechi you block with your ulna bone. In training you should block with the wide part though, you still condition and it wont harm your opponent as much. In actual fighting you learn to twist the blade of the bone on hit and this can break bones... John really should not have broken his partners bone at all, very bad form in training.

In lack of a training partner willing to do these drills... I use a tree just outside of our house. I guess a wodden dummy would be great to train on indoors. (if not with a partner). Thank you for sharing and the CC's. My Japanese is lacking. :)
@johndough81152 жыл бұрын
If the tree has an uneven surface (thick bumpy bark), its not good for conditioning, as it will cause internal bone-bumps... which when struck, will cause more damages to yourself. If you have no other option, at least wrap the tree with rope, to create a more even surface. Get some Chinese herbal lineament (Dit Da Jow), to both prevent and to remove any swelling. Use a few drops before and after, massaging it into the areas. The ORIGINAL wooden dummy used to only be for outside use, as it was completely static.. and its arms also did not move. This allowed you to hit it hard. However, Yipmans indoor dummy has moving arms... and due to the design, the rear part of the arm is only like a 1 inch square... This makes it too easily broken... when you hit the dummy arms with heavy force. Yipmans dummy is best for developing proper distancing, while moving / flowing. Not really for conditioning. In Wing Chun, much of the conditioning is either done in partner drills, or, on the Sandbags. That said, a lot of the foundations of Wing Chun training are missing. For example... there is no Wing Chun workout, in many schools. This is because the art was developed by a secret society that was trying to take over the leadership of China. They trained rebels that had previous fighting experience in other arts... and so, they were already Fit, and Conditioned... as well as had decades worth of general Kung Fu foundational training.
@CrinosAD2 жыл бұрын
@@johndough8115 yes, the tree needs either to be smooth (we do have a lot of that here) or roped up. I don't have a wooden dummy, but I do have a makiwara that I use often. (For punch and kicks, not bone conditioning)
@johndough81152 жыл бұрын
@@CrinosAD The makiwara isnt bad. The only problem with it.. is that it Flexes when hit. That flex is good for developing penetration strength... but not so good for developing Impact conditioning. This is why Chinese use wall mounted canvas sandbags. You pack them full with coarse grain beach sand (never use "Play Sand".. as that creates a fine dust cloud in the air, that can cause cancer when breathed in). When hitting the sandbag... the sand will conform to the shapes of your knuckles.. but right after that, will become hard as a rock. This prevents damages to your knuckle shape.. while providing an incredibly solid impact. Since the bag cant be moved... all of your bodily forces are bounced back into yourself... challenging your Entire internal structure... from your fist to the floor. And since you would typically be standing on a concrete floor... the energy would further be bouncing back into your feet, and again, testing your internal... like a Wave of energy... until it eventually subsides. If you dont have a solid wall to have them (these wallbags are very cheap / affordable), then you can either hang them on a tree (place a sacrificial material between the bad and tree, to prevent the bag from being damaged)... or place the bag on a very strong table or stone bench. The Chinese had a specifically designed Iron Fist table for such practices. Very thick legs, and a thick surface, so as not to flex, break, nor be driven into the ground / floor. The bags that have hanging loops, are often called Wallbags.. where as the bags that sit on a table, I believe are called Iron Palm bags. As for kicking, one can kick a wall bag, with a barefoot. But for some of my kicks... I put on a hard leather bottomed dress shoe, and kick a thick tree. This is only for heel+instep kicks. Not for round kicks. On can make a long hanging sandbag from a pair of Jeans, using pant legs. The impact is much harsher than a typical heavy bag. Make sure to use two jean legs... with one inside of the other, to double its strength... as that much sand and kick forces, might otherwise cause it to burst open. (Filling a standard heavy bag with sand would be way too heavy. They are not designed for that kind of weight)

Bone conditioning is a crucial aspect in combat. Just search Uriah Hall vs Chris Weidman. Nasty fight. One good leg check on you kicks and your bone may snap. Chris Weidman kicked Uriah Hall at his calf full power at the start of their fight and Uriah defended well, turning is feet to meet Chris kick to his shin, Chris's leg snapped. Worst thing is Chris didn't immediately notice it, and he went back to his footwork and put pressure into it, resulting it in bending in super unnatural way. Nasty stuff. Hope Chris Weidman recovered from that.

An aikido sensei, I know, calls it 'posture.' Everything has posture. If you fall down a laundry chute and try to hold on to something, the metal has better posture than you. If you can explode a heavy bag with a palm strike, and fall down a well, and you relax and grab for something to hold, you do a throw on yourself. Skill with 'posture' is better idea to work with than this idea of 'hard' bones, because if you think you're 'hard-ER,' you'll act like a buffoon.
I did this kind of body hardening training when I was a kid because I did not know any better but not that I'm a much older, much wiser man and I have seen the repercussions from this, the authrits, bone spurs and nerves damage, I would not advise doing this. This type of training has no real benefits, I am a kickboxing coach so I know fighting, I have trained a lot of people and I used to own an MMA gym and I have 3 champions so I believe I have the experience to back up what I am saying and that in all the years I have been training and teaching and all the wins my guys and girls have had in the cage and ring, never once did body hardening training come into play, it is just a waste of time, learn to slip punches and counter, learn to set up your strikes and kicks and not get countered, work on your cardio, and get sparing rounds in so you can perfect your timing and distance and see what works for you, these things will make you a good fighter, not bashing your arms or fists over and over again.
