In this film you join me on the rocks below Neist Point Lighthouse, Lure fishing for big pollock. Despite a devastating start to the session, things soon pick up and I manage to land some good fish.

Nice fishing. I fish for Pollock here in Ireland very similar to you. Full lock drag as the shelf I fish is 60 ft and kelp. Few big ones have snagged me up over the years so now I have a specific heavier rod and braid setup. Loved the video!

@EasterlyWind i use a penn squadron 11ft 6 for my pollack spinning, great for bullying them up past any kelp, you know yourself once they get their heads into the weed its usually game over unless you're very lucky, i lost what i was sure was a good double figure pollack at neist point last year, it made an unstoppable dive (i could'nt lift my rod up) and PING it was gone, i retreived what i had left and found the fish straightened out my split ring, it was only just attached to my power swivel, so i went home and ordered extra strong split rings!

Awesome Can I ask which month was you fishing? I see video uploaded 6 months ago but you with t-shirt 😀 Went to Neist point end of August, fished all day and only got 1 small pollock 😒 same story for other anglers that day.. would you say it is just random, depending on tide, weather, time of the year? Thanks

If I remember right this was July. It’s down to lots of factors. It’s the same with sea fishing everywhere, it also depends on what your target is. For big pollock, they are predators and they love to hunt the shore in areas that have good currents as bait fish can get easily disoriented and become east prey. So I find the current picks up around Neist point best on a big tide, when the current is visibly moving past the rocks. I find the action is best 1 hour before high tide and 1 hour after. You do seem to get a quiet spell at high tide when the current drops off for a while but stick it out. 👍

Hello Stewart, apologies for the slow reply, I’ve been away on a fishing holiday. 😅 the ideal set up to make the most of the Isle of Skye coastline…. I’d be looking to use a 10-40g spinning rod 3000-4000 size reel and 15-20lbs braid with 20-30lbs leader. Solid small 35g jigs work very well and can be fished efficiently. I’d also recommend some soft tail lures and top water lures to cover all bases. But when your on holiday, feel free to give me a shout on Instagram and I’ll point you in the direction of some good marks. 😁👍🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great video. What's the access like at Neist Point. Is it a climb?
@scottishmountainman1290
@scottishmountainman1290 2 жыл бұрын
The access is slightly challenging depending on your abilities. There is a path from the car park on top of the cliff, but the first section down is very steep, fine if your walking down for a look but trick with lots of gear. Once your down the face it’s less than a kilometre walk to the mark below the light house. It’s a well known mark so expect to share the space with other anglers. I almost always camp overnight to make the most of my trip. Plenty dry flat ground near by. Hope this helps and tight lines bud! 😎🎣

My biggest fish from the shore in Scotland was probably a 9 - 10lbs pollock I caught at the same spot the year before the pandemic. 😁👌🎣

@@theCombatbadger no that one went back to fight another day. I tend only to take fish if they can’t go back or I can eat them fresh on the same day. Don’t like to freeze or waste fish. 👍

@@theCombatbadger a very good point 👌 when I lived and worked in Madeira, large (older) fish would not be eaten due to bio-accumulation… meaning as fish live and grow in salt water, constantly filtering water through their gills their body slowly store’s harmful substances such as mercury. 👍

Nice one man! May have to take a trip up to Skye soon! What time of year was this if you don't mind me asking? The slog is real this time of year in Argyll and Bute. Nothing but the odd tidler to be hooked!
