We all make mistakes. An extra few seconds of preparation can save you from a big headache or an expensive repair. In a rush to get the front of my car jacked up, I missed the jacking point under the engine and the jack went right into the engine bay, destroying my radiator cooling fan. In this video, I show step by step how to replace it. This DIY is actually pretty straight forward and only requires a couple of tools. Leave a comment and let me know your most embarrassing story working on cars!

Back when I got my first car, I came home convinced the horn didn't work. After pushing the steering wheel center over and over. So I mentioned it to my mom's boyfriend while we were replacing the water pump, we ended up going through all the fuses and wiring, down to the actual horn itself. Only to finally realize the horn worked the whole time. But I was pushing the center of the wheel instead of the small buttons on the edge of the wheel.

That's awesome lol! I did the same thing when I got my BMW. Id press the logo in the center, but just like yours, the horn is on the edge of the wheel.

I have a story that will make you feel better. When I was in highschool, I was fixing up the family e36 325i and was replacing the driver side window regulator motor. Everything was going smoothly until I came to the part where I had to line up the glass to the two holders of the regulator frame. Remind you that the e36 window controls are in the center near the gear shift so with me needing to have the door open to make the needed repairs it was a long reach to slowly bump the control to make little adjustments. Since I was a 17 year old who never drove the car while it was working, I didn't know it had an auto roll down push feature. So as I needed to roll it down just a bit, it engaged the motor to roll all the way down. My arm was in a position where the scissor arms of the actuator pinched down on my arm and also had my thumb bent back almost touching my wrist. So as I was laying there wondering what to do, I had to swing the door closed with my arm attached to reach the controls and reverse the direction. Once I got my arm free I laid down on the floor of the garage in a sweat and being most thankful I didn't break or hurt anything, my dad was looking at me through the garage door window shaking his head as he walked away. It was the longest 10 seconds of my life. Haha

I took my fan out yesterday (335is E92, N54) to replace belt tensioner & belt. The amount of room I have seems so much less than your car; not sure why. Great advice you gave though to be careful with venting line to the radiator hose, wish I saw your video before attempting taking out my fan. After ordering today to expedite those two hoses ($129), I learned a valuable lesson....

When my buddy and I were replacing my valve cover gasket, I asked him if all the bolts were removed from the cover and he said yes, we proceeded to pry up on the cover and it wasn’t budging, we thought this thing must have been held on by the grip of god so we grabbed a crow bar and went to town on the thing in which we cracked the cover pretty bad, in tears we then found there is a bolt hidden under the servo motor that he didn’t see on the left side of the motor. We took that one bolt out and the cover came off smoother then butter. That crow bar decision costed me 400 bucks and I dropped my buddy as a friend. Just kidding but from now on I treat my e90 as if it’s made of glass. Thanks for the awesome DIYs Justin!

Dang that's too bad. I've also noticed if I'm lowering the car too quickly onto the jack stands, the car tends to want to roll backwards and knock the stands over, despite having the car in gear, e brake on, and chocks behind the wheels.

I had a MAF code on my 4Runner one time and figured I'd give some MAF cleaner a try before buying a new one. While I was at the parts store I happened to see the rustoleum aluminum colored paint that I'd read about being a perfect match for the 4Runners center caps and mine were peeling. I bought the paint and some MAF cleaner and pulled the MAF out as soon as I got home. I forgot to check which can I was using and sprayed my MAF liberally with the silver paint lol! Good news is, my MAF now matched the center caps perfectly! Haha! Needless to say, I bought a new MAF. Cheap mistake but embarassing.

Your lucky it only damage your fan. I did the same embarrassing thing. Jacked up and miss a few milimiter. Car fell. Damaging my radiator fan ang upper hose. Replaced both and found out my crank pulley wobbles. Thought it was just a worn out pulley. So ended up buying a brand new set from fcpeuro (harmonic balancer, seal and bolt). Still same wobble. Only thing we can think of was probably a bent crankshaft. I ended up replacing my healthy 102k mile engine with a healthier 75k mile.

I know nothing about cars except how to turn the key, use the steering wheel, the brake and gas peddles, and work the windows! So when my dashboard sensor light for low tire pressure came on I was confused. It looked like a high-heel shoe on a brake peddle so I thought it was something wrong with my brakes! My son, Justin Buice, had a good laugh out of that one!

A little embarrassing: I was drifting for an hour in the snow storm last night. This morning when I started driving the car there's a wobble in the steering (wasn't there last night during drifting). My opinion? That’s tragic, but frankly, not altogether surprising. I had one coolant leak and in fixing it, entered a hose replacement - radiator replacement chapter from hades. It never ended, short of replacing nearly every hose in the cooling system and the coolant tank. You gently move or bend one hose out of the way to make room-and it breaks!! A brand new Rein hose failed, too. I lost 4 gallons of pentafrost, ruined my epoxy floor and finally hired a mechanic to replace the water pump and thermostat. These older e90’s’ hoses are so brittle that you can’t take them off at all. When my other car gets around the same age -12 years old or 170000 miles-I’ll just replace EVERY hose / radiator/ thermostat and water pump. Horrible ordeal!

Use a scan tool that can read BMW specific codes and make sure that your electric waterpump is actually running. It’s common for them to fail, and the computer might be making the cooling fan come on to compensate. That’s my guess

A few months ago I was changing some brake sensor in the rear of my 330i. I slipped the jack under the rear of the car and began to jack it up and I heard this metal crinkling sound, but just thought it was the suspension creaking. All of a sudden, the car drops a foot or so and the jack slips out and splits my bumper. Apparently, it slipped off the rear jacking point and completely destroyed my muffler and rear bumper. Guess that was a good excuse to go buy a performance exhaust system :-).

Yesterday I went to the gas station because my car was seriously on E and after going inside to prepay I came out to pump my gas but the door to the tank was frozen shut. So after about 20 mins of being there and pouring hot water on the tank door, my boyfriend calls to make sure I'm okay. I told him it was frozen so he said he'd come help me. Right before he pulls up to the gas station I finally got it to pop open by pushing unlock on my key fob so I felt really bad he just drove there. He pulls up to my car and I told him I figured it out so he leaves. As he's waiting at the light near the gas station to go back home I get back into my car and it won't start. I called him back right away because I was worried he would have to jump my car and didn't want him going too far. As he is turning around I reach into my pocket and realize my key fob was in my pocket and not inserted into the car hence why it wasn't starting. He came back just for me to tell him once again that I figured it out. I was too embarrassed to tell him what really happened lmfao. One day I'll share it with him

Justin keep an eye on your DISA Valves, how many miles are on it? Mine is pretty much shot but luckily the pin is in tight and didn’t fall out and grenade my engine but the entire unit is failing and there is a vacuum leak through the O-Ring as it is flattened out now, the genuine BMW part is almost $400! But super easy to do, I went aftermarket for $77 and good reviews on the part, but yeah once the car approaches close to 150k miles i would change the Valves even if they don’t look broken, because they will fail and I don’t want them to fail in your intake.

Oldish vid (and good one) but I'll add this note for Auto transmission owners - you'll need to take the tray off from underneath, or at least release the front of it, as the ATF cooler is attached to the fan housing with a single T25 screw. Sorry Auto owners, you'll be getting the jack out :) Might be good to add to the description, Justin

I love everything about FCPeuro, just disappointed at the fact that they no longer price match.. lifetime warranty is great and all but I'm finding the exact same parts sold on FCPeuro for $40 less on competing websites.. I mean if you're doing wear and tear items like brakes and clutches then go FCP but if it's a long term purchase item like an auxillary cable for the radio.. if I find it on ecstuning for $30 cheaper and I won't ever need to replace it in my life again..

First time doing an oil change, trying to unscrew the oil filter i was turning it the wrong way. I even borrowe oil filter wrench from local mechanics shoo, eventually my neigbour whos a mechanic helped me to get it of. We had to put a chizzle throug it and then unscrew it. Fortunettly nothing got damged, exept for the oil filter, it looked like a doll that has been abused by the dog for 5 years

Wow! One time I didn't put the cap on tight enough on my oil filter and a mile down the road the low oil warning light came on and it was pouring out of the cap, down the side of the engine

Did a similar thing when removing an leaky oil cooler in a hurry, threw a wood block under the car for safety and forgot about it, ended up lowering my 96 STi onto the wood block right under the oil pan. Oops.

Dang! One time I changed my oil and poured the old oil back into the bottles to return to the store. I went inside the house to grab something and forgot the bottles were in front of the car and ran them over. Huge mess!

I literally lay on the ground every time to make sure I’m using a proper jacking point. Doesn’t matter if it’s raining or snowing lol. My car means too much to me to risk it like that.

Yup! I think the radiator is actually cheaper, but much more labor intensive to install. The fan was just over $500 but FCP helped me out a little since I've collaborated with them before
