Brilliant!!! The language deficit makes so much sense as I now see why the two narcissists I know both seem to use robotic speech or repeat inappropriate phrases that don't seem to correlate with what's actually going on in the real world.

It would be interesting to know what brain damage occurs in adults who have been abused by someone with NPD. I've been out of a 20 year relationship with one for going on 3 years & even though I feel recovered from it, I don't feel the same. It's as though I've suffered a form of brain damage. I'm not experiencing PTSD, but I've recognized I'm experiencing memory difficulties covered in areas of blankness. At other times I've recognized some mild dissociation. I had none of these difficulties until meeting the narcissist. I'm trying to "exercise" my brain by learning new things & trying to build more positive memories with new friends, hobbies & schooling. But I'm wondering if my brain will ever heal or if any brain studies have been done on those adults recovering from narcissistic abuse & trauma. Thanks same for this very interesting video. L. Well, there's the famous Helen Keller who couldn't see or hear. She had memories from before she had language. She was 7 or 8 before she knew language existed. Her writings on what it was like before she developed language are fascinating. When her teacher, ann sullivan, finally got through to her that things have names, helen said she had a deep sense of "remembering" because, I suppose, we are hard-wired for it.

This is the only video you need to watch on Narcissism. I can confirm he is right on for so many points here. Good to see the research has come such a long way to really shed light on what we all suspected. The relationship between spatial reasoning and memory is fascinating. Totally get the lack of differentiation between self and external world from child trauma is right on: child “rejects space.” I think that’s right on.

20:20: Freud's theory of infant amnesia is poetically portrayed in the "Mary Poppins" stories: the twin infants John and Barbara lose their memories (including, as I recall, past lives and the inter-life existence) and also their ability to talk with birds, when they start acquiring human language. Only Mary can keep all these capacities..

Why isnt he referring to any object or subject in reality in space around us? Now its clear. Thank you. Your videos show whats really behind/inside those poor people😢. And if we look closely we can clearly see how such a psychlogical state plays out in day to day instances. With a bit of observation we can be warned earlier.

Holy cow- what you just said. 2:33 yes. This happened. The abusive family language- negative affects on everything. Withdrawn from the world, I was small and suicidal. Both parents were depressed, dead parents to a stranger’s bastard. I was a disassociated child. I would say as a child I hated living the lie that I was their child. Reality was my mother’s fantasy- the fantasy of what she wanted me to do or act-not my world in my mind. And later 27:42 - no space for me, we “reject the space” space is where bad things happen you said. THIS. My parents expected me to move back in with them after college and even financially abused me to make sure I would but I did not and I refused and I still refuse to go back and now I do not talk with them. I suggest that we are mammals, we are territorial. We have memory and it’s ridiculous for them to want me to live with them and take care of them when the only way they communicated with me ever was with weird bananas abuses. I put myself in my room box and just tried to be a goldfish until I could leave. I told my mom as a child via probably your work on the internet how her inability to introduce me to the world because she didn’t like me was abusive. That she wouldn’t like any of my friends so she wouldn’t let me have friends, she didn’t like the spaces of my friends houses so she wouldn’t take me back to them and she would criticize my friends, their parents, their homes. Anything. Negative view only because she wanted me to only be her friend. But she only wanted a disassociated doll that wanted to do what she wanted the way she wanted and that was not me. I had no sense of space, I’d say I was directionally challenged. Until college in Baltimore- then I was walking everywhere and slowly learning a map for the first time (I refused to drive because I felt handicapped and did not want to be on the road thank good sense or instincts I was still feral in college at 21) reality in my world were grandiose- became grandiose- I was in art college, narcissism college. And then I joined the in-house circus and joined the theatre circuit, faerie festivals, became a clown and parade leader. How could I ever fit back in the closet?

Imagine being able to date and have access to another pool of people because you speak that language. I have just described my nex.
@janebrown7231 Жыл бұрын
Excellent question. It would be particularly interesting to know how the neurological changes in the brain's language centres from very early learning of a second language might tie in to the whole developmental picture of a narcissist. The language centres are cortical and not directly related to the brain structures in the content of this video, but it's possible to imagine potential influences.

I’m benefitting so much from these videos, but have a question about this one. I have two narcissist friends who each have enviable recall back to early teen years and beyond, to primary school days. Up until what age is memory consolidation blocked? Both are writers by vocation and avocation and one of them is published internationally

Thanks so much Dr Vaknin! Is there more detail somewhere relating to 'space'? Any links would be gratefully followed. I understand your terminology, spatial orientation, spatial perception and functioning in space.... I just can't quite take the leap to understanding what that deficit looks like pragmatically in this cohort, particularly in a child below 36 months who is developing in a narcissistic direction. But the connections of memory with spatial factors, and the language factors, are absolutely intriguing! Are there any obvious spatial deficits which are visible to a clinician (proprioception anomalies for example) which might be diagnosed in a young child, which could be indicators that memory might turn out to be limited? I am now listening for a third time and maybe I'll get closer... this video is so densely packed with information. I'm new to your channel so need to come up to speed! Thanks so much for your work. It's this deep level of detail, at the intersection of psychology and neuroscience, that I find really useful. I would absolutely LOVE to know how trauma-related spatial-memory deficits relate to the known deficits in autism, ADHD and neurodiversity generally, but I know that would be asking for a whole new video.😊
