Main takeaway is that the ancestors of the British Royal Navy would be aghast that Italy, Russia, and *gasp* France have pulled ahead of them in a key Naval sector like destroyers. Allowing austerity to affect the Royal Navy was a terrible mistake for the UK.

There's no other ship that can provide visible and versatile power projection, at a reasonable cost, quite like a destroyer. USS Carney certainly proved its worth recently. Short of increasing the budget, the UK probably should have invested in eight more Type 45 destroyers, for the same crew requirement, rather than a second QE class carrier which they can hardly operate.

Surrounded by water, navy is more important for national defense than the army for island nations, since the ideal goal is to prevent the enemy from ever landing on the islands to begin with, by defeating them out in the naval domain.

As an American I'm rather surprised that Mexico only has 3. Their coastline is massive. Then again they probably just expect the US to guard it's coast.

Or they don't have a need for capital warships to police their shoreline as the only nation that's a risk to them is the US against which they'd have a snowballs chance against anyway. Plus its cheaper and more efficient to patrol the coast with smaller vessels.
