Last week I paid 750 pesos for a burrito. No fancy tokusatsu delivery was part of the transaction, I just showed up in the taqueria and ordered a burrito pastor for take away, and the cashier looked me in the eye and said -That'll be 750 pesos. So, without breaking eye contact, I reached my wallet and handed him the cash. It was an extremely visceral experience, it didn't felt dirty, but it left me with the certainty that I've reached a point of no return.

Dan Bejar: An Unlikely Conservative Icon In the labyrinthine world of contemporary music, Dan Bejar, the enigmatic mastermind behind Destroyer, emerges as an improbable figure of conservative sensibilities, disguised under layers of lyrical sophistication and artistic nuance. His work, particularly epitomized in the album Kaputt, offers a compelling critique of modernity through a deliberate embrace of bygone cultural norms and stylistic conventions. This essay examines how Bejar, perhaps unwittingly, channels a conservative ethos through his artistry. A Disdain for Modern Vernacular and Sentimentality Bejar’s lyrical approach is a calculated departure from the banality of contemporary language. His choice of an arcane lexicon-marked by rarefied vocabulary-evokes a bygone era, aligning his work more closely with the formalistic tendencies of 19th-century literature than with the vernacular of today’s music industry. This esoteric diction serves not only to elevate his work but also to critique the superficiality and immediacy of modern communication. In contrast to the mawkish sentimentality that often characterizes contemporary pop music, Bejar’s lyrics are imbued with dry humor and understated eloquence. His approach is worlds apart from the overwrought emotionalism prevalent in today's charts, highlighting a preference for restrained expression that is emblematic of traditionalist artistic sensibilities. This preference underscores Bejar's departure from modern trends towards a more nuanced, reflective style. Bejar’s meticulous avoidance of contemporary clichés further distinguishes his work. His lyrics are crafted to circumvent the well-worn tropes that plague modern music, offering instead a more original and intellectually engaging approach. This avoidance reflects a commitment to a classic literary integrity, challenging the mediocrity of mainstream trends and positioning his work as a deliberate contrast to the prevailing musical landscape. Resonance with Historical Norms and Values Bejar’s work is steeped in a romantic idealism that hearkens back to earlier literary and musical traditions. Themes of love, loss, and longing are treated with a gravitas that recalls classic romanticism, standing in stark contrast to the cynicism that characterizes much of modern music. This romantic nostalgia imbues his work with a sense of depth and sincerity that feels almost anachronistic in today’s context. Moreover, Bejar’s lyrics occasionally reference traditional gender roles and expectations, providing a nostalgic glimpse into a time when such norms were more rigidly defined. While these references are often subtle, they reflect a conservative appreciation for historical gender dynamics, which might be interpreted as either a commentary on contemporary gender fluidity or as an expression of his personal cultural background. Historical allusions are another significant feature of Bejar’s work. By incorporating references to past events and figures, Bejar creates a bridge to the historical continuum, enriching the listener’s experience with a sense of continuity and depth. This historical perspective situates his work within a broader context, transcending the ephemeral nature of contemporary culture. A Calculated Artistic Strategy Bejar’s use of older cultural norms and stylistic conventions is often laced with irony and subversion. This strategic employment serves both to critique modern sensibilities and to highlight the absurdities of contemporary life. By invoking these older elements, Bejar not only celebrates the richness of the past but also underscores the perceived shortcomings of the present. It is crucial to recognize that Bejar’s artistic choices are not merely reflections of personal ideology but deliberate decisions designed to craft a unique and compelling voice. His approach distinguishes him from his contemporaries, positioning his work as a sophisticated and conservative counterpoint to the prevailing trends in modern music. His art invites reflection on the complexities of human experience through a conservative lens, offering a thoughtful and intellectually stimulating alternative to mainstream offerings. Illustrative Examples The album Kaputt itself is a testament to Bejar’s nostalgic embrace of a more elegant past, encapsulating a yearning for simplicity and critiquing modern complexity. The title alone suggests a wistful nod to an idealized bygone era. In "Blue Eyes," Bejar’s use of romantic imagery and traditional gender expectations evokes a poignant sense of nostalgia, reflecting a longing for a time when such norms were more pronounced. This song exemplifies his engagement with romantic and conservative themes. "The Waves Crashing" integrates historical references that embed Bejar’s work within a broader historical context, enriching the narrative with a sense of continuity and depth. This track serves as a prime example of how Bejar’s historical allusions contribute to the conservative undercurrents of his work. Dan Bejar’s lyrical craftsmanship in Kaputt represents a subtle yet compelling critique of contemporary culture through a deliberate embrace of older standards and values. His work, rich in historical allusions and traditional themes, serves as a sophisticated counterpoint to the ephemeral trends of modern music. By invoking nostalgia and intellectual rigor, Bejar not only challenges the status quo but also underscores a conservative aesthetic that is as intellectually stimulating as it is musically captivating.
