Omg I just realized that the "Black Paradox" story by Junji Ito is probably a reference to this dude. The story is way too complex to summarize but a part in it has a dude try to kill himself with sleeping pills but he comes back to life shortly afterwards, where he throws up a gem, which is actually a human soul, afterwards for several days he threw up more of the gems until he burst, the gems come out of a portal in his stomach to the soul world. I really recommend reading the story, it is really intriguing.
