these are very informative thank you! oh but the fairy in the nutcracker is called the sugarplum fairy, and i think that's why her design wasn't leaning much into flowers. the bottom-skirt part really looks like a sugarplum!
@still_your_zelda6 ай бұрын
There are some versions that show her as a flower (San Francisco’s yearly production has this motif instead) but I agree that it needs to pick either or in this case. It could maybe be both if it were a sugary flower! 🤔

If anyone asks me “how do you stay or get motivated?” I’m just going to send them your videos/this series. Your advice is so genuinely motivating for me, and whenever I’m about to sit down and do some character art, vis dev, practice, etc. I’ve found putting on one of your videos before and during really helps me remember what I need to prioritise . Thank you for your videos!! 🤩✨

Except sugarplums aren't actual tree plums. Plum was the generic word for dried fruit (usually raisins) and a sugarplum was just a little, rounded candy made the size of a plum (dried fruit). So it was in the sense of plum being a sweet thing, and sugarplums being sweet things made out of sugar (modern day: candy or sweet). It could refer to candied nuts like almonds as well, and more recently refers to chewier balls of dried fruit and nuts that are rolled in sugar, but that wasn't the original form. So really, the character design shouldn't be based on the fruit we call plums, which we used to call prunes (yes, even in the fresh form).
@LaraOlina5 ай бұрын
not to be that person, but in the original story of E.T.A. Hoffmann, there's no mention of a fairy at all (but a princess), and in the Russian ballet the character is called candy fairy, in german also sugar fairy and in japanese also a variant of candy fairy (other languages, idk). According to Wikipedia, "sugar plum" as well is a candy dragee, not a fruit plum 🤐

Lovely video as always, but I am curious. In the other portfolio reviews you always say to avoid fanart, which makes complete sense, but what makes works that design for already established stories like the Nutcracker different? Are they not both fanart at the end of the day?
@ruththompson78167 ай бұрын
She's addressed that, I don't remember where. Basically if you design characters for a preexisting story it should be a story in a different medium, like a book, not a story with pre-made character designs. The Nutcracker was originally a short story, so it's fair game to make your own original character designs for (as long as they're not just derived from the San Francisco Ballet version or something). Fanart that should stay on your personal tab would be something like drawings of Sonic the Hedgehog, i.e. characters designed by somebody else. Bottom line, if you didn't create the character design, you shouldn't use it for a professional portfolio.
@xerox10847 ай бұрын

so make it more dramatic ?? Exaggerated -) meaning that .. the viewer should get the idea of the character with just looking at the design . Well thats what I got from this video . -) the story should be clear from the scene alone -) all more emotions if in action . anger (in action), humour etc. -) add more variety . sooner the better Well that is what I picked up well of course this will not be 100% acurate as she is professional and I am not into college but for some notes this is alright for now

About the purple dress ballerina, don't touch the shoes. The ribbons you drew are very wrong, the ribbons should always stay low around your ankle. Also like everyone said, the color should be similar if not the same. Even if it is for cartoon, it shouldn't portray something so unrealistic like barbie ribbons, we, as ballet dancers, hate them with passion. Thank you.
