Detailed analysis of Jehovah's Witness statistics from Watchtower reports.

Using Watchtower's annual publisher reports spanning back to the 1960's, growth rates are analysed and compared, showing a steady decline in growth.
There have been a few comments offended that I described faders as volatile. I am sorry for any unintended implied insult. I actually recommend fading and commend people that see the religion is not the truth and have the strength to fade. I was referring to a small group that have not determined if it is the truth or not, become inactive, and then go rushing back each time there is a calamity, in fear that maybe Armageddon be coming.

I just realised the other day that a person can still be counted as a publisher if they only reported a handful of times throughout the year for a minimum amount of time. They could, in fact, miss every meeting during the year and still be counted as an active JW by putting in a report. I mention this because the organisation ridicules the way other religions count their number of followers.

But the first thing that started bothering me was, at a Circuit Assembly, the District Overseer stood at the platform and talking about the 1914 generation said, and I quote: 'The Governing Body has NEVER said that the generation of 1914 would be alive to see the end...' I just reached into my case and pulled out the Live Forever book that has a drawing of a baby born in 1914 and an old man staring at the destruction of Amageddon. I even talked about it with a fellow pioneeer. If he had used the usual 'new light' excuse, I would've eaten it up. But openly lying was a hard pill to swallow. Then came... Things I saw while working in Bethel Puerto Rico. The child abuse cases. The Broadcastings. The annual meeting with the skinny pants talk. Tony Morris in general. The Overlapping of generations. The Australian Government Commission. And finally, Crisis of Concsience plus a lot of research. When I found out about all the false dates given by these people and how the governing body are nothing but business men and Pharisees that act just like my local elders... that cemented it. I might share my story in the future.

Thank you for this. When I was doing graduate work in World Religion I came across a journal article by an African American researcher who did a detailed study of how JWs went after the African American community in mass in the 60's and 70's because they saw them as a disenfranchised group that would be easy to convent when the promised a utilitarian and utopian existence where race and class were not seen as a hindrance. I could go on, but it is not surprising that they are still going after disenfranchised groups and people that are struggling and suffering because they take advantage of them and give them false promises to bring them in. As many African Americans became educated and had a much larger access to higher education more and more left and called out their bigoted teachings. Fight them with real truth and facts. It's the only way.

I wouldn't bother to share this "Apostate" info with the elders. Elders like the power and importance they have in the congregation and are more likely to continue as a JW even if they have doubts about some of the Watchtower's doctrine. Speaking to them about anything you've learned from Apostates will only provide the evidence they need to DF you. Since you are not yet shunned, please just use this info to save your family and perhaps closest friends. Start with those you know are spiritually week. Getting yourself DF will only cause you to loose the opportunity to awaken those you love the most. Keep the communication open by being a fader and don't get yourself shunned. Family members that use the internet a lot are the ones I'd try and wake up first. Also try and save the young ones as early as possible as that can keep them from loosing opportunities for a good education and a normal life.

The WTS has been preaching a false Gospel since its inception as a religious publishing house . When C T Russel the founder of the WTS. proclaimed that Jesus took to heavenly throne in 1874 and that 1914 was most likely going to be the year of Armageddon. Have some in-law family who are JW what I noticed was many don't really follow the JW religion but they keep going because their family is stuck in it many are what I call a jack witness they don't want to be shunned. Any organization that forces their members to stay members aren't really going to get very enthusiastic effort out of them.

Indeed 2020 was the first year Watchtower had a decrease in the amount of publishers. Furthermore most countries aside from sub-Saharan African nations have seen neutral to slow growth. Furthermore the members are aging just look at videos from Kingdom Halls and Conventions it’s full of old timers. A demographic collapse is not too unlikely.

Wonderful job with the stats! And thank you for making all this data and information available on your web site. If I’m not mistaken, WT doesn’t give avg publisher data anymore do they? Anyway the difference between peak and average publisher data isn’t terribly large anyway, and it’s fairly consistent. If we had all 12 months of data we’d see the variability and std dev. I think WT massages the data to make things look most favorable for them anyway. That’s why comparisons like you did are so important. Trends are the real insight into what’s really happening in the organization. The data shows that there is no longer any correlation between the number Baptized each year and the number of hours put in to witnessing. The majority of growth seems to be coming from born ins. Even there the membership is hemorrhaging at a huge rate. When I see photos of Kingdom Halls the attendees seem to be preponderantly women. If this is true, where are all the men? Are men more likely to leave? And if this is true then why? This is one of the most misogynistic religions there is on the planet. Why would single women want to stay in? I wonder if there are any stats anywhere on the make up of membership by gender? Again fascinating stuff. The numbers tell the story, and despite how much WT might try to put the best spin on the statistics, the numbers still speak the truth about what’s happening inside WT. Great video!

Excellent analysis. One question though. The chart @17:55 where you show your Watchtower growth projection. I'm kind of surprised you don't expect them to ever reach 10,000,000. Why not, and what are you basing the curve on?

Why I'm Not Convinced - bend over in the rate of baptisms and the number of hours required to achieve one baptism. It won’t be long before the rate leaving overcomes the number baptizing. Once that happens there’ll be long slow decline in the number of publishers and the love of the many will cool or whatever it is they say when times get tough. I wonder why the WT message is so appealingly to Mexicans? Because right across the border to the north in the motherland of the JW religion, growth has pretty much stagnated.

Although mostly a catholic country, Mexicans have been moving from the Roman Catholic Church to other denominations on the last 30 years or so. Even when moving from one belief to another, Mexicans tent to be quite fanatic about it and they remain loyal to their new cult.

Why I'm Not Convinced, that graph may be a bit misleading, as it is simply conjecture. The subtle point I was trying to make from it is that the religion is not likely to collapse at any moment now, which many that leave hope for at first, and then are disappointed over years to see that it has not. Rather, there is stagnation in developed countries that I think will start declining more rapidly. This is based on the Australian census data which shows a rapidly increasing average age of JWs. The unknown is how longer the high growth countries can continue that trend for. I hope it won't be too long, simply on the basis that Watchtower cannot concentrate on them due to the financial strain they cause.

Not only the financial strain it costs WT to convert people in these countries, but once they convert hundreds of thousands or even millions of people, these individual in these countries are not as well off financially and cannot reciprocate and put money back into WT coffers. These countries also are the ones who tend to suffer more damage from natural disaster's because of shoddy infrastructure, and it means WT also has to pay more in relief to their followers in these countries. Overall its a huge money pit. I think the leadership has found real estate is the only really big money maker for them. It could be that efforts to make converts externally will slow down, and more attention paid to keeping the born ins. Right now 2/3 of the born ins leave.

Why I'm Not Convinced The Mexicans ? They’re just having a go at fulfilling prophecy ! A modern day wall of Jericho is to be built along the Mexican border seperating them from the promised land .... the JW motherland.... the GB will direct all Mexican brothers to the border where upon receiving a sign from the heavens they will all blow their trumpets and the whole TRUMP built wall will come tumbling down !! You’ve read it first here ahead of the watchtower.

Not a profit; just a realist. Since the internet, there has been an Exodus at an alarming rate for Watchtower. Statistics and trends show that only 10% of the population in a good portion of the world will be religious by 2050. The point of no return, or the tipping point will be reached as the Watchtower already has the worst retention rate already as regards holding born in's. Basically, the Watchtower is in the position of Sears and Radio Shack. Don't argue. Just look at the facts for yourself. Younger generations will not be buying what Watchtower has been selling, and the new satellites that allow fast speed internet to reach 3rd world countries ensure that the Exudos speeds up. Spoke to some WT insiders. WT already lies about 8 million worldwide. They fudge their numbers. Look at how scared the WT is of apostates and what they know. The English speaking Ex JW Community has only been at it for about 15 years, and has hit their stride. They will only get better, and more English around the world will wake up. While that happens, the Spanish Speaking Ex JW Community will be making themselves known, and then there will be negative growth in ALL Spanish Speaking lands; just like there already is negative growth in ALL English lands already. The money WT gets from donations primarily comes from 2 languages. English and Spanish donations prop them up. They have nearly no presence in China. For Japan it is a wrap. WT is a business. They will fall like other businesses have. They have let go of Bethelites who thought they were life long stayers, downsized other operations, and sold off properties in order to adapt and survive. More to come. Ever read the article about 10 reasons why we may be seeing the beginning of the end of Watchtower?

Katy Wendell - What part of the WT fudging the numbers do you not understand? Do you know how many people lie about their field service time and still expect to make it into Paradsise? The way these people lie is a cultural thing, and they lie to protect their IMAGE. All the time. Nothing is more important to them. There JW dot ORG used to be focused on getting outsiders in. Not anymore. It is now focused on trying to keep the ones they have to stay in. But, people are leaving. They do not have close to 8 million anymore, but they will keep saying they do. They are a cult. They care about their image. They always lie to protect that. There is no Yearbook for the first time. Why? Think about it.

Katy Wendell - Did you know that Watchtower has Circuit Overseers and Elders leaking info to the Ex JW community? The info has been on point. The Internet was something the Watchtower didn't count on being able to do the damage it can to them. It has done the damage and the handwritting is on the wall. In the next 2 decades, most of the die hards who were convinced they will never die will be dead. This form of Christianity ( if you want to call it that) has a weakness in that the beLIEf hinges on not dying, and surviving the change of this system to a God operated system. This present Governing Body. How long should they live? They can push the goal line, but newer generations aren't as gullible with the internet around. Those in the 3rd world countries don't give enough for donations. WT has pulled out all efforts in India. They Are at a stage presently where they are considering doing the same in Africa. After the November 5th Warwick protest, an Ex Bethelite informed us of all the arguing going on within Warwick and what they could do to prevent Kingdom Hall crashes. Also, it was an insider in Warwick who leaked the footage of the protest. WT is irrate they can't figure out who did it. Do you know how many Ex JW who were pioneers, aux pioneers, and regular publishers admit to fudging the numbers when filling out their hours? This is within the WT culture. If you were JW, you know that certain lies were ok. This culture starts from the top down. It all starts with image. They lie more now than ever to protect their image. In 1975 there was a reason for lower numbers. What would the reason be for now Katy? If they admit to lower numbers, it would wake up too many. Scientology fudges their numbers; what makes you think Watchtower doesn't? 1975 wasn't something they could lie about when it came to how many left. This was common knowledge to even the average JW back then. Almost every congregation saw a decline, and many were disgruntled about giving up everything for nothing to happen. They were even more disgruntled when WT pinned the blame on the rank and file. If you are an Ex JW, you know someone who is still on the inside who desperately wants to stop attending meetings...even if you don't know this is how they feel. I am in contact with a few in my zip code who stepped down as elders. Also, why keep arguing? LOL. The decline of religion in the Western world has already happened. Various sources address this. So, your case isn't very strong.
