I am so happy I found this today. I'm not good at doing this kind of thing ( 66 yo Grandmother - this picture is old ) and didn't remember where that sensor connected back. The connector for mine broke as I was pulling the tray out. So I realized I could just remove it at the battery, connected it back, and taped it. I just forgot which battery I took it off lol. So thanks so much for that. As well, I didn't remember where the spacers went. Now I do. I'm waiting on a charger. Apparently some chargers can help a battery to somewhat repair, it's called "Battery Maintainer and Desulfator," so I am going to do all 4. This might be a marketing gimmick, but it wouldn't hurt, and one showed 11.5v using my new multimeter. The rest showed 13.1. I'm going to watch the full video even tho I got what I need from it at 17.36 so thank you for being so thorough. edited to add: I am using one of those old hard plastic milk crates to hold the entire tray. It's very close to the perfect height and it is holding the entire weight on it. I wanted it out of the way. further edit: when the tray is out of the way the transaxle is exposed. So I drained it and refilled with good gear oil. I hadn't done this in 450 hours so I hope I didn't ruin it. It had been stopping all the time and I thought it was the battery. Maybe partially, but I think the transaxle oil is the main issue. I hope.

Currently changing out my four 75 amp batteries which are 5 years old and starting to not make it to 100% charge. I feel blessed that none of my batteries have failed, but it's possibly due to hardly ever running them all the way down, or the mild weather in Florida. Amazon prices for the batteries were $160 for the 75 amp and $170 for the 100 amp, (March 2024) and I decided to replace with four 100 Amp batteries, which are longer and the brackets at each end of the tray will need to be either removed or moved much closer to the ends of the tray (I am going for bolts to replace the threaded rods today). The higher capacity batteries should mean that they will not be run as far down, which should lead to longer life. Thanks for such a comprehensive video. I will certainly remember to install the battery hold down correctly, (thanks for leaving that part in). I have used two cinder blocks, two pieces of 4x4, and a piece of 3/4 plywood (or 2 pieces of 1 by 4) and build a platform that provides very stable support for the battery tray. It uses what I have, and I just build it behind the mower.

Thank you for the detailed video!! I was having issues with the mower stopping and then start beeping and battery drained after a half hour. After investigating here and there figured out it was due to the short life of the batteries.... of course they don't mention that when you're looking to purchase the mower!! Seems like all the videos are about replacing the existing batteries with an upgrade and not just swapping them out. I'm not mechanically inclined to be replacing the charging port, battery meter, as well as the batteries so I really appreciate your video! Now, about that squeaking... 🤔 going to have to search your videos for that cuz I'm having that issue in the front end too.

So the Ryobi charger works fine with the AGM batteries? I have an electric fishing boat and I used to run AGM before I upgraded to Lithium and my charger had a specific setting for AGM. My Ryobi mower just started acting up with losing charge in a big hurry. I have elderly folks on both sides of me and I clean up their leaves for them, and I used to be able to do both of their yards and mine and never even get down to 50%.

Not 100% positive. Usually sensors on the battery terminal either are a secondary voltage indicator or a battery temperature sensor. In my automotive field they’re used as temp sensors. But I cannot say with certainty what ryobi uses this sensor for.

Thanks for the very detailed how-to video! In general, is it better to just replace all four batteries since they are probably the same age? Otherwise you'll probably end up having to do it all over again with the next battery when it fails. Anyway, I love my RM480e and have had no issues with it for 2 years (bought it essentially new) until a few weeks ago when the blades stopped spinning about halfway through cutting the yard but it would still roll. Charged it up overnight and finished the yard with no issues (but the battery indicator shows only a few bars even when fully charged). Thanks again.

Any idea on what you should do in cold climates with these mowers? I am looking at buying one and see it says to keep it on the charger when not in use, but in the winter (December-February) it often gets below the temp that they say not to charge it at... do the batteries degrade if it sits for a month or 2 without being plugged in? What is worse for it- leaving it plugged in when it is cold or leaving it unplugged and then plugging it in on warmer days?

If you can and have the space... I would pull the batteries out one by one and store inside that's above freezing (basement, 4 season room, garage etc). Once they are all out and separated you can get battery tenders for them that are normal 12v ones from amazon. A cheap two-pack (you would need two of them) are like these amzn.to/4ebUiWf A good 4 bank charger (one charger does 4 batteries) is this one but its pricey. amzn.to/3x2SBJN

Great video! Question: Can you tell me why your numbered the batteries in the sequence shown in the video? I know these batteries are connected in series, but is the numbering sequence you use the sequence of how they are actually hooked in series? The reason I ask is I am installing a Pulsetech PowerPulse 48-Volt Battery Maintenance System which acts to desulfanate the battery plates and thereby extend the battery life. They say that the system should have the positive lead hooked to the first battery's positive terminal in the sequence and the ground lead hooked should be hooked to the negative terminal in the last battery in the sequence. Any thoughts on this?
@beaterboxgarage
@beaterboxgarage Жыл бұрын
The batteries I numbered were in no specific order, they were numbered so when I tested them at work with the battery tester I was able to match the print outs of each test result to the battery. So that way I knew that "battery 2 is faulty" and which was which. No rhyme or reason. Series is just negative to positive, negative to positive and repeat. It sounds like the maintainer just needs connected at the first battery (positive) and the last battery in the series (negative). That would give it the full 48 volts to charge.
@waynebarto3540
@waynebarto3540 Жыл бұрын
@@beaterboxgarage Thanks for the response...yes you are correct that the maintainer needs to be connected to the first battery positive terminal and the last battery in the series negative terminal. However, I do not know for sure which battery is first and last? I ended up connecting the positive lead of the maintainer to the positive terminal of the left-side rearward battery and the negative lead of the maintainer to the negative terminal of the right-side rearward battery. Do you think that is correct? That was the best I could figure out from looking at the wiring because I could not find any wiring diagram that shows it. Thanks again!

What does the power meter / charge meter indicate? Does it measure the battery voltage or something else? Mine can be 'fully charged' yet still stop running after 20 minutes. Conversely, it can show 1/3 charge and also stop after 20 minutes. My batteries are still showing as 13 13.2 13 and 13.2 v, so I think they're good. I get the same voltage even after running for 10 minutes. @@beaterboxgarage The batteries in mine are different style and the posts are all on the side (smaller end). The batteries like yours would require rerunning new cables. However, I have made the decision to transition to lithium setup after doing a ton of research. I ordered a new charger, lithium style battery, and new gauge. I should have everything by next week. This will reduce my 4 heavy batteries to 1 48v 50ah. If all goes well, this setup will cost me just shy of $1000 and last many more years than these AGM.

First, great video. I'm buying one of these from a friend who has had it for four years and I anticipate I'll need to make at least one battery swap. Couple questions: 1. Could you upgrade to the 100Ah batteries by just swapping them in, or would it need a new controller as well? 2. Swapping the lead-acid batteries for Lithium should be straightforward, right? I would think that would alleviate the need to keep it plugged in when it's not in use...

You can switch to 100ah with no changes needed. Switching to lithium may require using a charger specially set for lithium vs the factory RYOBI charger. Lithium batteries require different parameters when charging and when they go into float mode.

Great video! Thanks Update: Mine didn't start, no lights when turning key. I stored my ryobi outside under a tarp but chipmunks got to it and chewed up my wires under the seat. When I pulled out the battery tray the charge receptacle wire snapped off from the charger lockout circuit. Is that connected to the starter control? I don't see any lights when key is at ON position. Oh, incase you're wondering all batteries tested as fully charged. I ordered the parts so just waiting on delivery. Thanks again!

Excellent video and much appreciated. I'm an Aussie and have deep cycle AGM batteries running my house, so know them well. What is the dimensions of both the 75's and the 100 amp batteries? How much clearance top wise is there? Toying with the idea of fitting two 12v 140ah batteries, if they will fit, or trying similar replacements. Less batteries with higher ah capacity. My 140's are tall but thin.

You got a deal/steal. Great detailed video. You mixed original SLA batteries with AGM? I thought that would not work right? I agree with upgrading to lithium but its a large expense. One day maybe a 48v 100aHr Lithium will be under $1000. My mower is in its second season and my charger goes blank and charging port blinks fast. Next step is testing batteries and charging each on a repair/maintenance charger.

they're SLA batteries. AGM batteries are still lead acid batteries, they use glass mats between the plates that holds the acid vs SLA which is a flooded acid battery. AGM batteries would def hold up better to the vibrations of a lawn mower thats for sure.

To all those saying they want to switch to li ion or lifepo4 batteries just a heads up from someone whose done it before. Just like 1 of the lead acid batteries went bad from the bank and caused issues, the same can happen with li ion or lifepo4. Worked great for a year, and after a tough winter even on a tender, I had cells go bad. Essentially the pack would show 48 volts, but the mower would die randomly and voltage would drop sharply. Came to the conclusion one or more cells in the pack went bad from either summer heat or winter Temps. To have a local scooter store tear the pack apart, test each cell and replace the bad ones i was risking the cost of a new pack, which after charger and shipping was just over $1100 2 years ago. In theory I was hoping the battery to last at least 5 years of worry free use. B.S., went back to my 9 yr old kawasaki powered mower, she's running like a top and my ryobi is on marketplace waiting for a new home.

The only reason I watched this was to see if you did like I did, and left off the plastic covers. BTW, coming from a retired Electronics teacher, You can't get a good test of any battery without giving it a job to do WHILE you are checking that voltage . A 12v headlight would be better than nothing. Car battery chargers, (some do) , have a setting to do just that, it's called a LOAD test. Auto mechanics used to yank (unplug) the coil wire so the car would not start, then test the volts of the battery while the person behind the steering wheel, assisting, is turning the ignition key.

Ryobi RM480e is a very expensive piece of junk. One of my worst purchases ever. When I complained to Ryobi that my 3.5K dollar mower needed 1K dollar of batteries and service I was offered a free seat (the one that came with the new mower got a cut after just a couple of month from a little stick I drove by). I was also told that on average, even if they claim batteries can last up to 7 years, they usually need replacement every 2 -3 years. That is ridicules. So, after spending 3.5K to purchase the machine, every year you should spend 1K to just keep it running. What a piece garbage of a product. I had the same experience that the previous owner in the video. I mowed for 2 years (summers only) then I was able to use the mower just to pull stuff around for the start of the third year)

These batteries make this lawnmower useless. I have a 300 and need a 2nd set of 4 batteries after I bought the mower in 2021, the batteries last barely 12 months. The mower is used year round, so the story about winter storage being a problem is not the issue. The first set was replaced under warranty, the 2nd set I need to pay out of pocket, and with the 3 year extended warranty you get 50% reimbursed. But the insurance only pays a max $500 for batteries. A $350 warranty for a max. $500 cover. Means I am on my own in the third year, and then this mower becomes completely uneconomical garbage. Does anybody have experience with lithium replacement batteries for the ryobi mowers?
