SO MUCH TRUTH in how unique trouser measurements are!! I'm 5-8" with a long torso, with a full belly but not much difference between my waist and hip measurement. It's so easy for woven trousers (like breezy linen summer ones) to give me "diaper butt", or the waist isn't high enough to be flattering, etc etc. One of these days I might pay someone to measure me and create a summer trouser pattern for my specific body. I'm still novice enough that it stresses me out! lol! But there are SO many good patterns here I'm going to try as well. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge!!

LOVE THIS!! Thank you! The Free Range Slacks, Pietras and the Safiyas are on my list. This is fabulous. I think you should try the Free Range in a less shifty and plain fabric and see what happens, they look so amazing on so many people 🤞🤞🤞 I want to do a similar experiment as you! Maybe after some black friday sales or something. Thanks again!

Brilliant video, Sam. I think lots of people have issues with making trousers/pants You highlighted several pitfalls today which, hopefully will make my next pair a better fit. Thank you . Very helpful .

Hi Sam. What a marathon. Thank you so much for sharing all the things you've tried and sewed and pondered in terms of what works and what doesn't. It's a gold mine! It's interesting that the pants you felt did not work well tend to be in cotton lawn fabric or the cotton double gauze. My own theory is pants often need a bit of weight to the fabric to hang right and drape over curves. Or if they're made of structured fabric, they need to fit closely. Both the cotton lawn and the cotton double gauze might just be too light and floaty to work. For years I've tried to find a pattern I could use and modify to get a pair of woven cotton pants for hotter weather. I'm still searching. What tends to create my own personal conundrum is if the woven pants are loose enough to be comfortable when I sit down, they look totally baggy while standing and walking. And if they're fitted to me standing, they are outrageously tight and horrible when sitting. The one exception is overalls with an un-fitted waist. But I've been unable to use the loose pants part of the overalls to modify and successfully add a waistband instead of an overall bib to hold them up (the result looks horrible with stiff cotton fabric gathered in, making a big round pooching-out mess at the waist. The pants I sew successfully are out of heavy-ish stretch woven cotton fabrics. Those are too hot to wear on a very hot day due to the heavier fabric, the spandex part reducing the breathability, and the need to have the pants fit closely to not look balloonish. I might give up and try for long culottes. Thanks again for this and the companion video on pants! Wishing you luck and more stamina as you continue your pants journey, Antonia

I bought the sewing liberated learn to sew pants course. It was excellent at figuring out how to size pants to my body shape. I just made my first adjusted onyx pants and they fit so much better than any pair of pants I’ve bought or made. Well worth the cost of the course. I have the Pietra pants pattern next in my queue. I’ll keep the long rise in the front in mind. Excellent video. Thanks for sharing your experience with these patterns. Very useful!!!

Its Spring in Australia and I love the Peppermint Magazine Lounge Wear Pants. They are an easy make, I often lengthen pant pattern to full length. I use this pattern for loose pants love using Linen/Viscose blend fabric and pj bottoms for winter and summer both in flannelette and cotton fabrics. Great video of all your pants!

Wow that’s a lot of trousers you’ve tested for us! I’m a shortie too (5’ 1 on a good day) I’ve only made the TATB Safiya trousers - the crop length looked ridiculous on me but full length look better. I wondered with the crop if the leg is too wide for the shorter length us shorties need? Great vlog as always

Great video. I made my first shorts from a big 4 pattern before understanding sizing, ease etc and they were too small. Since then I have made the Muna and Broad Birchgrove pants first in shorts, then sized down to make cropped trousers. Since I have made them I have gone back and reduced the front rise on both. My hubby calls the shorts - flappy but I'm quite proud of them as I own no other shorts. I have the Miller Trouser pattern by paper theory that I might try next.

You are so persistent and patient. I’m bookmarking this video because I need some pants and you’ve given us the skinny. My Bobs were sooo big on me so now I’m being a chicken about pants. I admire your attitude to plug along and tweak until you get it right. Sew on Sam.

This is a really helpful and informative show and tell. I'm tall, about 5'8"... getting a bit of shrinkage now that I'm older.. but, like you, my height is mostly through my torso. It will be interesting to see how that affects fit when I get around to making my own trousers. To be honest, as a larger woman, growing up when options were quite limited, I just took whatever I could get that 'fit' and never thought much about clothes at all until this last year or so. Figuring out what I like in terms of fit and style is going to be an added adventure to just learning to put the things together and tweaking them.

Great vlog Sam, thank you! 😊 My current trouser faves are the Chanterelles and Bobs 👖 Also have a few pairs of Safiyas but often get lazy and do the elastic all the way round instead of the flat front. The Pietras were ok as shorts but haven’t tried the trouser version yet and as I’m the same height as you, I’m a little concerned 😂 At some point will work up to trousers with a zip!

I made the safias on chambray and I'm not sure on them. I then made them again in Jersey and lengthened them to make a cosy super wode left lounge wear jogger style and I love them x

My main fit issues are the crotch in trousers being up my bits and pieces. Mainly because I'm often in a wheelchair or sitting. And the armpit of tops being right up into my armpit, because I'm longer in the torso. I can easily lengthen a top, but I don't know how to adjust the tops. My extra height seems to be between the top of my shoulder and my armpit. Would you consider doing a video for that too? This was so helpful

Great vlog really helpful - I’m short in the rise and longer in the legs so the Emerson work a treat for me - think they have a mid rise adjustment somewhere, which might help. The Simone set by Maven patterns became my go to last year if that’s any help. 😘😘

Hi, I felt so bad about your so liberated pants… you looked devastated! Have you considered making a little box pleat in the top of the pocket and add a button on it, or elasticate the pocket top. The trousers are otherwise looking great .

Sam forgive me, I had to laugh at your face when you were trying on those Arienite pants, you can absolutely tell from your expression that you aren't pleased! Those are some pockets lol. Maybe try taking some of the fullness out of just the pocket? I have narrow hips and a FULL BOOty - I suspect these would be even weirder on me lol. The Emerson pants? The trousers are nice on you, but I do think they end up blockier than some of the others - I suspect you are right about the lower waistline - you have quite a defined waist and it's completely hidden in these. As always a fantastic video, I feel like I could actually tackle trousers again - narrow hips, FULL seat (and currently a very full and fluctuating tummy), big calves and thighs and I'm only 5ft 4 with super tiny legs lol, I've been avoiding even rtw trousers lately, but I love trousers!

You have a very nice shape! I have longer torso and more tummy on my 5’ frame. Yes, healthy 73 year old 😂
@louisethompson28612 ай бұрын
I did exactly the same with the Safiya pants. I’ve made the flat front wider - but now they are too baggy in front. They need a pleat or something! Or maybe I should just have put looser elastic in the back…. It’s a minefield!

I too have been playing around with trousers. I am 5'3". My pietra trousers were so long in the front rise too and way too big in the waist. I pulled mine apart and cut off the front top, I still have to work out how I am going to deal with the side seams for the back. I have tried the style arc fi-fi and the lenaline vlad ones. I am going to have a play with the top down centre out method of fitting and going you use the Thea trousers as the test.

I have also made the sew house seven free range slacks this year too. Front rise is too long and I made them ankle length but legs too wide for me. Not my fav at all
