there is something neat about watching someone do the jobs you do as well, def seen some things that made me go ":huh interesting ill have to give that a try" lol,I have transitioned into a Cisco Voice Engineer role recently while my previous position was IT Support for a Franchising company, college and a Financial company.
@EastCharmer
@EastCharmer Ай бұрын
thank you! yeah I really like sharing real world videos like this. Did you take a certification just for voice? that's an interesting role. I also work on IP phones but all I do is configure and troubleshoot them. what's your role like?
@neage7171
@neage7171 Ай бұрын
@@EastCharmer No, the company I started working for was just looking for anyone with IT/Networking experience and was willing to train people to fill the role and pay for certs. I did have some experience managing stuff in Communication Manager and Unity for a small company and my general IT experience in other businesses they gave me a shot... My role is at a MSP and the contract my department is on is for a hospital/healthcare for several states and I am assigned a particular region. So I deal with the basic stuff like troubleshooting and basic configuring of Cisco VoIP phones, provisioning servers for new sites are being build, doing network hardware upgrades like configuring and installing new Voice Gateways, troubleshooting analog cabling and troubleshooting PRI/SIP calling issues. Going into telecom has been interesting. We are encouraged to pursue certs. Never thought I would pivot into telecom but it has been fun and interesting side of the IT/Networking field. CCST>CCNA>CCNP: Collaboration.
@neage7171
@neage7171 Ай бұрын
@EastCharmer I did not go down the certification path. My last position used Cisco VoIP systems and the IT department was small, so we all received a crash course on how to use and support it. The company I work for now hired me because I had some experience in CUCM and Unity and a strong IT background in general. The company I currently work for is an MSP, and I primarily support a hospital system in the region, so there are multiple locations. I received a lot more on-the-job training, from troubleshooting phones and basic configuration in CUCM to building small departments in CUCM and building and deploying ESXi servers and voice gateways for new hospitals being built. I also troubleshoot SIP/PRI calling issues and still work with analog some for faxing. It has been an interesting transition from just typical IT/networking work, but it has been very enjoyable.

When configuring a new switch are you expected to know how to do everything yourself or are you usually handed like instructions from a higher up in I.T? I'm currently job searching but I'm just worried about forgetting commands. I'm sure they'll allow me to research before implementing changes though on interfaces.
@EastCharmer
@EastCharmer 2 ай бұрын
If you're a more junior role, they expect you to know the fundamentals atleast like how to load an OS? How to power on the switch and console into it. It also depends on your role and department. We have a networking team that does all the configuration file for us and we just implement and install the devices. It was my first switch project so I shadowed a senior member and we were also given instructions. If you're new to the team, they usually have someone mentor you and your work gets approved first before making changes. So don't worry much about forgetting commands, just understand how it works. They don't hand a major project to a junior member and have them do stuff by themselves

So being that the config file is provided to you, do you do any pre-checks before bringing the old switch down like pinging the new switch IP address within the config file to make sure it is NOT a duplicate IP? What if you do find an issue with the config file that you just know will cause a problem with the new switch, do you stop the upgrade and notify the engineers of a potential issue with the config file? Or do you just proceed with the upgrade as instructed and when it fails, proceed with correcting the config file and/or reach out for support?
@EastCharmer
@EastCharmer 2 ай бұрын
yes of course we do pre-checks. we don't rack the new switches if we find issues with them. and before we even configure the IP address to the new switch, we've already planned what IP address and hostname we'll use for them. and of course we've checked if those IP address are available to use. These are all validation we have to do even before ordering and configuring the switches. It's part of the project planning. We don't configure IP address on the spot. Idk who does that. If we find issues with the new config like we did, we don't rack the switches yet until we fix the issues. The upgrade will be postponed but not stopped but this is depending on the situation too. Our old switches are still working so we have the luxury of taking our time with the project and making sure that they don't have issues before we rack them. Also, we still keep the old switches racked for weeks just in case an issue happens with the upgrade, we can still go back to the old switch. I've mentioned in the video that it is best practice to not decom the switch right away
