I would say that the evidence of his existence and accuracy of his life is more credible than any picture someone could of painted of him at the time. Also, he wasn't born into a royal family or family of any wealth at all so him actually getting a painting or statue made in his exact image would not have been for him. Plus, in 2000 years, even if one was made, there is still the high probability it didn't survive over time.

But you can’t be so radical with your new method of belief so you have to adapt some things that the masses are familiar with. Look at some modern cults or eastern religions like Buddhism for example (cult wasn’t a bad word until about a 100’years ago btw). Why haven’t more people gravitated towards these dogmas? Scientology offers purification of the body and soul while alive but its practices are so hierarchical and bananas you don’t have any grounded to relate to.
