What does Detention mean in trucking?

Truck drivers say that waiting at warehouses for new shipments to load or unload is one of the most aggravating parts of their jobs. It's called "detention time," and it's a result of retail and manufacturing warehouses not being organized to get their shipments ready in time.
Trucking Layover is when a driver is delayed by a shipper or receiver for one or more days. Layover pay is the rate that the driver is paid by the trucking company or the company of the shipper or receiver. The standard is layover pay does not start until after you have been delayed for a full 24 hours.
