I really wish this "non-toxic" trend paralleled more with reducing plastic use and living a more conscious lifestyle. It has become such a marketing scheme when you don't have to replace products but more so learn to use less products. Not to mention everything is made of chemicals so it is really a grey area to live a "natural" lifestyle. Reducing what you use to the basics like shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bars, Cleaning with vinegar, ditching detergent in plastic jugs for detergent sheets etc. It is a learning curve and mental shift but it is really so simple once you make the change. It is also so much cheaper!! And the carbon footprint is so much less. If we all collectively shifted we would shift the market and industries to hopefully actually produce healthier, sustainable products that improve our health and the air quality and reduce plastic that ends up in the oceans

I hear ya. Wouldn't it be great to totally eliminate plastic.

This is definitely the route we have gone, homemade in glass jars, we can't afford trendy natural living 😬 but by making these efforts you realize how little we need and how much is just marketing!! For instance, we make detergent that lasts me six months and costs a few dollars to make and store in a glass jar, Castile and water for hand soaps, and whipped tallow is my only face and body lotion...which my whole family also uses lol ...that cuts out about 25 products right there and we haven't missed them 😬

I love this take. Same goes for fashion, buying those timeless pieces that will last as opposed to fast fashion

I hear you! This is something I've tried to be more conscious of myself in my home, taking small baby steps. I think any shift towards more natural living, whether your DIYing or purchasing, is a great step! I feel like some people are overwhelmed by DIYing/would rather just outright purchase something, whereas others have the time and are more interested in making stuff themselves. Neither was is wrong!

This was one best explanations I’ve heard on how artificial fragrances affect our bodies. Made it so much easier to follow and understand. Thank you!!

Other than a beeswax candle that someone gifts us, we stopped using candles when my aunt caught her living room on fire with her Yankee candle display. Her cat knocked them off of the coffee table towards the couch. Some also give me a head ache, but the main reason is I don't want to walk away from an open flame that could be a problem. I open the windows when I can (it's harder in the winter lol) and diffuse. I also save leftover citrus rinds and put them in a pretty looking bowl with a little bit of baking soda. Just get rid of them when the citrus smell is gone. Lemon works the best.

Oh gosh that's so scary!! And I absolutely love the idea of the citrus rinds - great way to use something that would have gone to waste too!

Young Living is no doubt expensive. People just have to be smart financially. Start out small, figure out what works best for you. You'll end up liking it or you dont. I'm a stay-at-home mom now and don't bring in any income therefore, I do not buy from YL, right now. I use what oils I have on occasion. You can smell your house with DIY Stovetop Potpourri. Keep in mind, you can use oils for so many other things, too. I highly recommend getting the starter kit; it is a little bit of a gamble because you really don't know what things really smell like but, that is why the "oily" community is on here to try and share their knowledge of oils (What they're good for. Sharing details on how they smell, etc.) Becca is hands down the best gal to explain oils. She is who inspired me to get started with YL.

Should you clean your diffuser? If so, how?

Yrs for sure! That will keep them running better & they will last longer. I've had some of the same diffusers (from YL) for years that I still use daily. I usually just wipe them out really well with thieves cleaner or rubbing alcohol

How many drops you use really depends on the room size! Oils will never be as strong as artificial fragrances (this can take some getting used to but is actually a good thing) but there are some oils that are really strong, like lemongrass, lemon myrtle, cinnamon, davana, purification..also how much mist you see totally just depends on the lighting in the room haha

You need to be transparent to your viewers. Saying essential oils are safe and healthy alternative to all synthethic chemicals is incorrect. First of all, "natural" does not always mean safe. Mixing essential oils also changes their original chemistry. So can you guarantee it's a 100% safe? I'm also sure you know that it takes a whole lot of these plant/flowers or whatever "natural" material to produce a little amount and you also cannot guarantee that they are responsibly sourced. You are selling them that is why you're only saying all good things to market and get more sales. As person who is in a healthcare, be truthful and tell your audience the good the bad and the ugly.

I only use, share about, and trust Young Living essential oils - they are the only ones I've personally used/promoted for a long time now. You are totally correct that they are not all created equal!! They grow all of their own plants, distill everything themselves (you can visit their farms, I have myself!) and are very transparent which is why I trust their quality!
