Brilliant! As a bi woman, I want to say I LOVE butch lesbians and it breaks my heart to see so many transitioning... And for what it's worth, I am attracted to people who are comfortable in their own skins and to their beautiful personalities. Thank you for this illuminating and intelligent conversation!

I'm a straight woman, but I've always appreciated and enjoyed the company of butch women and tomboys. You're needed, you're valued, thank you for being yourselves, you make the space for all of us to be non conforming even if most of us do it in less obvious ways than yourselves.

I so appreciate you all sharing. As a mom of an older teen who first came out as lesbian has now decided she is a trans man. One thing I have figured out that she had no lesbian role models or friends so since the trans community is so prevalent it’s easier for her to go that direction. Thankfully she is waiting to try to do any permanent physical changes but I hope she will give herself time to truly experience some of life and then decide.

Butches have been transitioning out of my circles since the late 90s. It really picked up around the same time as Boys Don’t Cry came out. I don’t think the movie had anything to do with it; it is just a snapshot of the homophobic world at the time, and of how hard it could be for same-sex attracted women with gender dysphoria back then, and how these women were treated, and how they felt about themselves as a result. Transition or not, butches could relate to that alienation and desire to just be “normal” and find love. I have a lot of grief over what we have lost. Having to cheer about it for 20 years despite how troubling it all was in private, has been one of the most difficult experiences.

@32:00 Please understand most lesbians don't watch gay male porn. Some do, just like some straight men do, and some straight women do. It's not a widely practiced phenomena.

Carol is legit

It's quite ironic/confusing that strict religious and patriarchal ideologies that oppose homosexuality and promote very narrow gender identities leading to experiences like Carol's. And yet these are also the same people that are often vehemently anti- transgender.
