I used to drive one of those when I first left school in 1966, had a Baker angle blade and a Carco model HS winch on it. Still driving dozers full-time 57 yrs later, much easier theses days with diff steer, A/C cab and GPS for to assist with machine control.

Great to see the old HD14 up and working. It was some of the best technology of the time but was quickly superseded by the next generation of AC dozers. When you get the better undercarrage on and clutch adjusted it should serve you well for the amount you use it. I'm surprised how the Detroit started after sitting so long, it must be a good one. Keep up the good videos.

Hi mate. Yes it was a big machine in it’s time but was updated fairly quickly from what I believe. Still good to preserve it and use it once in a while. I will hopefully one day get the tracks on it but it’s not priority at the moment. Clutch is hopefully just an adjustment. It’s always started good, even after sitting years like this. It must be in good condition still. Plenty of videos to come yet

This HD14 reminds me of the CAT RD6 cable dozer my father occasionally used on our Idaho farm. I looked up the engine spec: it had three 5-1/4 x 8 pistons with 660 Cubic In. displacement and top 900 RPM. I remember when my father would put the blade up against a tree the tractor would never stall, it would just slip the tracks and keep pushing. One could hear every cylinder detonation. I was always impressed with such a strong machine.

Hi mate thanks for the comment. They were great old machines these old dozers. Caterpillar made excellent dozers and still do. A mate of mine has a few RD6 machines in different arrangements, all restored nicely.

Sure wish you had my 13' rake that I built to push with my Allis Chalmers HD-5. It was great at pushing up large amount of material with minimum dirt for easy burn and minimal cleanup after. 🤠👌

Gudday Steve , Love the video mate . My dad had a HD7 with the same winch set up and back in the day wen he was working it all the time he extended the winch control lever to level with the front of the seat mate way more user friendly. Keep the videos coming,I'm looking forward to one on the HD7

I reckon a video of him telling dozer stories, tips and trick over snacks would make a canny video. Especially cable dozer techniques before the old skillsets are lost.

I doubt he would do that. He doesn’t say much when I film. He’s not one to brag either and I think that’s how it would feel to talk about it. There wasn’t a lot of cable dozer work. Mainly early hydraulic stuff. Even the old trucks he carted them around on was a job in itself. Had his own truck and a cat d6 and would build dams and clear land or whatever was needed

I'll bet with his lorry at the end of the day you knew you'd done some yakka. Especially if it's a low loader where you disconnected the bogies to get the bed low. Having seen one at a machinery show dropping off a dragline it gave me a whole new respect for the men of that era so give him a cold snack from me🍺👍🏻

Yes mate it’s a lot of work to angle it. Not something we’ve ever needed to do here. I brought a D6R home when I bought the place to do all the detailed work.

Steve, Jim Rioux from Connecticut. This Allis reminds me of the dozens used in America that caused our dust bowls. Why is this Detroit so quiet and do you know the weight of your machine. Maybe old but if you need a job done it still does it. Needs some serious undercarriage work but still goes. Nice to see the machine working instead of a will it start. Hi Jim. What do you mean by dust bowl mate? I would say it’s quiet because its derated in power. In a truck they are rated at 238hp but that much power wouldn’t be needed here so probably smaller injectors and possibly retarded timing. It has a straight through exhaust and still no noise whatsoever. It weighs 14 tons, hence the 14 in HD14, plus blade and the pcu equipment so maybe 15-16 tons all up. It is good to do a working video Jim yes. Great to use them after sitting around. Thanks mate

@@stevesplacedownundersteve, what I meant by the dust bowl in the early 30s was they used those machines to deeply plow up the original grasslands of the prairie, thus having nothing to hold the soil down when the winds came, they created massive dust bowls and all the good planting soil was blown away. Another great vid', Steve! I love watching the ol' 2 strokes do their thing!! I noticed that there is a stack of pulleys mounted above the winch's on the back. We used to have an Inter' TD14 cable blade that we picked up from just over the Vic boarder (Jingelic, I think?) when I was about 16, it also had the same 'pulley block' assembly on the back. Do you have any idea what they were used for? I've been dying to know for almost 40 years, now! Ha ha!!

The pulleys act as a fairlead when towing a cable scraper. One sheave will swing side to side to feed cable evenly on cable control unit drum. Then the cable threads thru second sheave which pivots side to side to guide cable back to scraper. I’ll do a more in depth video on how it all works when I set up one of my towed scrapers this summer.

Hi mate, we haven’t had a lot this year really but had some big floods the last few years which didn’t really affect my place though. We’ve had enough to keep it green but that’s about it. Had a lot of frosts too which has dried the lice out and we are heading into summer and a dry spell also which will change how everything looks
