As a GPF resident, I must say you nailed it with the facts. I like the way you preserve your videos. It’s good analysis with a good sense of humor. Now what I dislike is when some say the Gross Pointes are “Unobtainable and's only affordable compared to California Beverly Hills” What I have to say to those people is, nobody said mansions are cheap. Honestly, for a family orated place. Yes, it’s very affordable compared to Beverly Hills Ca. But why even go that far? Subjectively speaking, for the most part, all the Gross Pointes are actually even affordable compared to lots of places in Michigan itself. Such as Beverly Hills Mi, Franklin, Downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor Charter Township, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bingham Farms, East Grand Rapids etc etc. It’s a good bang for your buck for the quality of life and the other necessities that come with it.

Yup. It's a great community for those who enjoy the character of those style of homes! Someone who's spent their entire lives in LA or San Fran would have their mind blown when they see how much less a waterfront home in Grosse Pointe would be when compared to a place like Malibu or any coastal community in San Fran... hardly any natural disasters in Michigan to worry about as well. Just 4-6 months of cold and gloomy weather.

Chris I just watched your video on GPF. As a long time Michigan resident now living in Texas your videos have really provided me with a yearning for home. It is great to visits my hometown, where my grandparents lived in Detroit and some of the suburbs that were areas frequently visited as a child. Your Detroit series is really the best ever! Thank you so much

Thanks again Chris for taking the time and energy to produce this lushly filmed production. Before seeing this I was only vaguely aware of Grosse Pointe. Because you are well educated, smart, hard working and wise we viewers are able yet again to really see both the how and why some place is the way it is. You so remind me of my brilliant college humanities teacher who taught us how to look at a place as a manifestation of many different factors rather than something which just happens spontaneously. As a retired senior I was interested in taking non credit college courses. Yeah I am doing that now thanks to you! Craig

Chris, Another good video, more white snobbery. I had to laugh at your opening of your Grosse Pointe Park video. Growing up on the east side living close to Moross Road, I experienced it firsthand. Many years ago, after I graduated from Denby, I moved out of state but on one of my trips back to the Detroit area, one of my high school buddies and I were driving on Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms in his Mustang complete with racing stripes were pulled over by a policeman, we weren`t speeding or doing anything wrong. We had driven up and down Lake Shore Drive a couple of times. His car probably stood out. The policeman was nice about it when he asked for IDs. Since neither of us lived near there anymore, the policeman told us to leave the Grosse Pointes and followed us on Moross to Mack Ave. By the way, I am old enough to remember when the area on the other side Alter Road that you mentioned in your Grosse Pointe Park video had houses there.

Dang. Crazy story. Next time just drive a newer luxury SUV and you'll fit in with all the other snobs... police wouldn't think anything of you when you pass by, you'll blend right in.

The police do a nice job of keeping the residents safe. Even residents get pulled over for headlight issues, muffler, tinted windows, etc. Even if there is no threat, it is a trade off for low crime rates. You could do the same thing in other areas and probably see the similar results.

I was familiar with Packard because my grandfather worked there, but I agree with you that most people under the age of 50 would only know about the company if they knew about the abandoned buildings, and most people under the age of about 30 wouldn't even know they made cars there, even if they had heard the Packard name.

Great work highlighting the GP area. There is a large boating community, horseback riding, tennis, etc. which may not be as strong inland. There are some stoggy people or snoots, but most of the old money people are the opposite. There are many professionals that work hard for their dollars and they appreciate others. It's nice being able to drive down Jefferson to go to downtown Detroit. Grosse Pointe South is a fantastic school that has a lot of family involvement.

Very nice area! I looked at real estate listings, there was a nice home of approximately 1235 square feet listed for $349,000. Probably high by Detroit standards, practically free by CA standards and a whole lot nicer. Property taxes are pretty high, but you would expect that in such a nice community. I've spent a bit of time in the Detroit area but have never ventured to the Grosse Points, now I want to.
@josephsierzengaIV10 ай бұрын
This video is informative, but it doesn’t do Grosse Pointe justice in terms of how beautiful the Pointes are…some of its most prestigious streets are not visible or accessible to the public or are gated. Not sure what part of California you are from but Grosse Pointe Shores is on par with Holmby Hills, Brentwood, the residential part of Beverly Hills. Up until a few years ago, Grosse Pointe Shores had 3 NFL Owners living there. I know this is more of an East Coast thing, but it’s considered an ‘Old Money’ Enclave of Metropolitan Detroit. New Money area’s Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin would be like Calabasas in LA.

It's amazing how so much more character a neighborhood has when every house is different in architecture unlike like where I like live, a tract neighborhood with only 4 different floor plans. GP is less expensive than Birmingham. I noticed in GPF they have had one of Ford's mansions listed for a long time.
@josephsierzengaIV10 ай бұрын
Real Estate is more expensive here in Oakland Counties wealthy cities/villages such as Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin for example. prices are not as high in GP on average but 3/5 GP’s have a higher per/capita/income than Birmingham and Grosse Pointe Shores is the 21st wealthiest enclave in the US and wealthiest in the State of MI. And there hasn’t been a Ford Mansion for sale there in a very long time… perhaps you are referring to the Ralph Wilson(Former Owner of Buffalo Bills)Estate which just sold for 9M$

Beautiful area. Wealth is a good thing because it keeps out people who ruin communities. Humans have paid to escape urban living since Roman times and it's easy to see why. The 1920s were peak suburb build quality. I came from one in North Jersey and we'll not see the like again.

Mr. Harden, I like your style of narration, but I must urge you to take more trouble to drive by houses, etc. at a time of day when that are actually being illuminated by the sun-not when, as in the bldg above at 5:35, the sun is behind them and so we can't see a thing of the actual bldg. For an example of a Drive-and-Look video collection whose proprietor always does this, see Joe and Nic's Road Trip. The care that he takes to always do this results in especially attractive and visually interesting videos.

Ehich Pointe borders Saint John Ascension?!? This dim bus driver passed my stop at Warren and Saint Aubin, which I asked him to call-out for me. I got"lost"in a book I was reading and noticed I was at Warren and Cadillac. Being thrown off by all the half-turns,the bus takes on its' route,I asked the driver which direction was Mack Avenue and Saint Aubin,as I'd planned to walk to my church from my current location. But he insisted on taking me to the"Mack Line",but I would've easily trod to my church from East Warren and Cadillac on foot!! But I relented and after a while the driver shouts:"LAST STOP!!" So,now,having no more money on me,I had to walk from Mack and Morross to Mack at Saint Aubin with my Michael Cromer briefcase in tow!! 😶
