Detroit Series 55 cold start and warm up

Another cold start video. 23F degrees. I enjoy the way it smokes and coughs around the 1 minute mark. I hope you enjoy it too.

computer makes 55 series run on 3 cylinders till it gets to running temp or you release air brakes, to cut emissions down on cold idle...seems 10 times worse smoke to me though. i dont know if it is a frieghtliner or detroit thing but mine does same thing but still runs strong with 640,000 miles on it

It seems to start right up or not at all. Never in between. Now the Kenworth T300 on the other hand...

Starts up great! What I don't understand is why at 0:50 it suddenly starts hesitating and knocking, do you know what's causing that? What year is this truck?

yes they did, and it was a failure. Believe it was around 1996,

@@wittemanadrian At the time I was a Service manager for a fleet and we were considering the series 55 as a alternative to series 60 engines for a low weight van division. We had very good luck with the s60 engine. We tried a few and ran into repeated head gasket failure. At theend of the day DDC pulled the S55 option. The Engine was a Mercedes Benz unit that ddc modified to use their DDEC fuel system. They deleted 1 cylinder bolt to make room for the DDEC injector and that proved to be a fatal problem. ( the engine has individual heads and gaskets for each cylinder). Other wise a nice engine if you derated it.

@@nfarnell1 thanks! That's much more info on the 55 than I knew before...I looked at one in a short hood fld in grand rapids and sure enough the head gaskets were leaking...Detroit should know better than to change the mercedes design! Currently running a dd13...(mercedes also!)
