Just a note on the Zeppelin version, there was no autotune back in 1973 the vocals were actually slowed down a bit in that recording of the song. The title is derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent and from the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished.

"'No quarter' refers to the US Revolutionary War when Great Britain enforced a policy requiring colonial Americans to house British soldiers and offer them food and a bed during the cold of winter. If this policy was refused to a British soldier, this "No Quarter" policy allowed the British soldier to invoke severe punishment (death, sometimes) on the American who refused him. This was only one of the many ways in which Britain attempted to legitimize their treatment of Americans in their effort to interrupt their recapture of the colonies."

rx7dude2006 I can definitely respect that man, I just think (in my personal opinion) they did it so much better than Led Zeppelin, they didn’t butcher it, they actually enhanced it in my opinion. But I do see and respect the rawness of the original. Without a doubt

This song was a total playground for them. They released salival as kind of a prelude to Lateralus. It had been a while then since we had a new album. When this came out, I knew Lateralus was going to be insane. That was a great time for new tool music

I understand the arguement for it. But its a reaction video. If I wait until the end then i lose my thought process as with TOOL especially, they are so gifted technically that every moment and every transition is one of its own. A similar regular comment I see is do the album in order to understand the songs better, but the reactions are days and days apart so it doesnt work well that way. Both of those practices are better saved for when I listen to the album through personally in my own spare time :) Appreciate the feedback though. I hope you atleast enjoyed the video despite the pauses.

I think of it more like maynard got robert plant's point across, to a different generation, that listens with different ears. The echo-ey underwater-ey sound is supposed to be there. It is representative of the psychedelic experience. Which is really what the song is about.

my interpretation of the song is that it's about someone in the process shutting himself off emotionally from other people or a partner (lock the doors and kill the lights ) this is someone that feels betrayed or cheated or has had his feelings abused by others and he no longer wants to have anything more taken from him emotionally like he doesn't want to give other's an inch (no quarter) he also feels alone and trapped and and can't escape it . but I could be completely wrong lol !
@Detrucci5 жыл бұрын
That is a really insightful way of thinking about it :)

Ian sometimes things are metaphors.....sometimes they are telling a story. The “creepy” vibe you are getting is from the minor scale it was written in. It’s supposed to be creepy because it’s talking about war, battle, cruelty and death without mercy. Not a light subject. Read the lyrics. It’s about soldiers trying to get a message through the lines in the middle of freezing cold snow.......and they probably won’t make it.........they ask no quarter for themselves.........in other words they neither ask for nor give mercy.
@helenespaulding93724 жыл бұрын
Oh......and I had never heard the Tool cover of it.....and I agree that it is fabulous! No question. But No Quarter by Zep is actually one of my favorites of theirs, largely because of the cool guitar riff and bass guitar.....which Tool duplicated WONDERFULLY. So I love both versions. Thanks for introducing me to the Tool one. But p,ease....it’s nothing to do with “creepy” child porn.......it has to do with “creepy” war and death.

The Led Zeppelin version is unmatched even by Tool. I love both versions though. For more comparisons, check out Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" and the Pantera cover.

Yay! I had the same reaction to the beginning of this song where they pay homage to Robert Plant’s vocal effect, I love it after that part. No Quarter is my least fav of Led Zep’s songs. Try not to let this turn you against trying some other Zep in the future. They did a lot to set the foundation for rock & roll and metal to come. One of the other comments defines no quarter, so I will just say a relisten once you’ve read that comment will help change that creepy vibe you got to one of war, weariness, and the distance sounds of battle Danny’s drumming brings to life.
@Detrucci5 жыл бұрын
Il definitely give it a relisten. I think with the topic being war instead of creepy would make a big difference

It may not be autotune but I am not going to apologise for my opinion. I dont think the vocals in that song sound good. I have seen other reactors on youtube pretend like they have never heard bohemiun rhapsody or Europe's Final Countdown and pretend to act surprised at certain parts. Thats like me saying ive never heard the famous lines 99 problems by Jay Z.. I aint here to lie to you all. If I dont like something...I am going to tell you. It doesn't mean I dont like Led Zeppelin. I think their other songs ive heard are some of the best rock songs out there. But unfortunately this one isn't one of them. imo ofcourse :)
