This is probably the best cover I've ever heard. Tool did an outstanding job of keeping this original by using the same lyrics and riffs while injecting their own style with complexity and a heavier sound they are known for. When you hear the cover, you know its a cover by the lyrics and riffs but you know by the sound that it is a Tool song. That is exactly what you want in a cover. The best version of this song is when Zeppelin themselves played it live. There are tons of amazing live version of No Quarter. All the way from the ones in 1973 where it was 10 minutes long (already extended) all the way to when it was 30 minutes long (Zeppelin weren't just hard rock, they were progressive as fuck, especially live), when Plant sounds like he's just had a revelation, Bonham is on a ton of cocaine and his drumming sounds like a giant wolf running after you, Page's guitar varies from super aggressive to delicate and Jones' piano playing is hauntingly beautiful. That can't be topped. That being said, this is a cool cover and a nice homage. It takes balls to cover Zeppelin. Gotta give it up for Tool there.
@Ishmael32619 жыл бұрын
inglishbulldog Sorry, this is better than the Zep version. And why would you want to hear this for 30 min unless you were on acid? Well, give me some acid and the 30 min version and I'll get back to you.............boh versions all good, just playin.
@apolloptx9 жыл бұрын
Ishmael3261 Well obviously, you get a lot of amazing variations within that 30 min version. They go into 5 or 6 pieces that could be completely different songs. From funk to boogie blues, to acid rock then back into the dark progressiveness of No Quarter. Although I prefer the 10-15 min live versions.
@Umadeabadmistake9 жыл бұрын
Ishmael3261 I bet Tool is ashamed that you are a fan. Why did they pick this song to cover, dumbshit. Not playing. You havent a clue and it shows. Crawl back underneath that rock from whence you came.
@markdrube67209 жыл бұрын
inglishbulldog Man I have got to find that zepplin live version you were talking about. I love the album version, but over time, tools album cover has become my preferred version(over zepplin's album version). Its just more emotional and raw feeling than zepplin's(especially towards the end). It really is one of my favorite covers ever. Can you give me a link to that live version you mentioned(zepplin's). I'm getting goosebumps just reading your description of it. If it wasn't for tool covering this, Im not sure I ever would of listened to zepplin. And I am so glad I did. Its amazing how much influence I can here in tools music from zepplin(as well as other bands. Particularly pink floyd in tools later albums). They paved the way for so many great musicians of the 90s. Sadly, music hasn't evolved in the 2000, 2010s like i did every other decade. Just like tool took influence from zepplin, today's bands need to take influence from tool.
@3DGFORLYFE9 жыл бұрын
Jared Alford Today's bands take influence from each other cause they all sound the exact fucking same. I mean early 2000's kept the progressive rock alive but now its just terrible. And just youtube Led Zepplin No Quarter live I'm sure you'll find a half hr video of it.

Why do people want songs on spotify? KZbin has everything. Does a song become better once put on spotify? Serious question. I see a lot of people asking for that and I am confused
@AngusYoungreloaded5 жыл бұрын
karanick016 greece a lot of people use Spotify just for their playlists. I basically have a rock/metal playlist and tool is unfortunately missing in it, even though it’s one of my favorite bands. It’s also easier to show someone a song on Spotify, since most people use it, has no ads, and the quality would be better than on KZbin

Im lost here? Why is everyone commenting on which version of this song is better? Thats so silly really. Tool covered the song out of pure respect for LZ. Dont spoil the gesture by arguing over who did it best. I dont even think Tool tried to upstage anyone either. Just appreciate both versions and be grateful for two absolutely amazing bands giving us their interpretation of this magical song.

Tool definitely paid homage to this song, with respect........and also happened to out-do Zeppelin on their own song in the process. It was never any intended upstaging, Tool's version just happens to live up to the song's potential more than Zep did. Doesn't mean Zep didn't do an amazing job on this song, Tool just did it perfect.

Dude shit the fuck up everyone thinks they are both good, this one is better the audio is pristine and the vocal is on point way better and clearer than Led Zeppelin when you cover a song you do it your way the way you see it should be done fam. So nah it’s perfectly understandable to say which is better.

Unlike most covers, Tool elected to alter a few lyrics for their cover of “No Quarter”. With these changes, this song appears to be told from the perspective of the invaders (often theorized to be Vikings given the allusions to Thor and Ragnarok in the original), while the original was told from the perspective of the people being invaded.

I like this a lot more than I thought I would. It's such a heavy, psychedelic groove, you really can't fuck it up. TOOL is for real and they definitely know how to honor the original. Maybe people don't do this anymore but this music is meant to be cranked up LOUD, or it entirely misses the point. No, louder than that. Keep going. More still. That's it.

Hmmm, I'm 52 years old... I shouldn't be doing that. But I do. Not sure I've ever had a sound system in my car that was eventually blown out, usually from Tool. I'm just barely holding onto the fidelity in my current ride, Pneuma ain't helpin.

The term "no quarter" refers to war times when enemy soldiers were taken captive. They were to be immediately executed or receive "no quarter" meaning no shelter, no food or water, no comforts of any kind. This song makes me think of that every time i hear it. Wicked!

Yeah, though really, let's be real. This is probably one of the closest classic rock songs to Tool's sound, though maybe there's a Sabbath song from "Paranoid" or "Master of Reality" that could fill that spot. Led Zeppelin never really made any other songs like "No Quarter", sadly.

Probably the only band that deserves and owns the honor of covering a Led Zeppelin song of this magnitude. Tool demonstrated to have the genius to take the Led Zeppelin masterpiece into our times and the respect of rearranging it not with the arrogance of "improving it" but to emphasize the ideas that made the original so great and timeless. Plus making the song their own, in complete honesty and yet never withdrawing from their own achieved artistry.

I know they have a big following. I know they are held in high regard. But really, I'm not a fan, until now. I'm going to look far back in to this band's catalog.
