Hot take: I'd bet that a large number of players who found the secret in the tutorial, those who found it for the first time without being spoiled to it, did so because they got their legs blown off by the robot in the previous section. John Romero didn't "contribute next to nothing" to Quake 1. He did a ton of maps and game design but Id had the nasty habit of deciding people were "bad" and once they decided that you were basically done. Sandy Peterson talks about this on his KZbin channel. The first person this happened too was Tom Hall. After that person after person was driven out of the company. American McGee did great job but one day they basically said we don't like you and booted him no matter what he said. It was like a middle school lunch table there.

In the Versalife mission you can actually leave without triggering the alarm if you use a jump aug or a pile of crates to just exit through the vents, which is my prefered way. Also, in the intro they say "your appointment TO FEMA shouls be finalised within a week" which means that they are discussing Walton Simons actually becoming Head of FEMA and is much more foreshadowing since Bob Page just nonchalantly discusses how he can hand out appointments as head of a federal agency.

Just to throw this out there, Deus Ex Machina while now a more modern trope to "unfuckle" the corner writers put themselves in, is not what it was originally meant to be. In classical Greek plays, usually you would have a twist or point in the story where the Gods meddle or intervene in mortal life (AKA Zeus unable to keep his damned pants on for a picosecond), so in order to make it "seem" like a God entered into the play, they had a machine that would either lower or raise the actor onto the stage. Hence the original more literal translation is "God Machine" because that was the basic purpose of it. In essence, all modern literature or movies or games or what have you uses Deus Ex Machina literally all the time in a more seemingly mundane way. Such as having a person appear out of nowhere, or flying or so on. Just thought I'd toss this in.

Click "Read More" to see Corrections & Mistakes I made in this video. Thank you everyone for the love and feedback with this Review! This is my biggest project since my X5 review in terms of length and time put into it. I started this project back in April in hopes of releasing it in June, but because of complications in my personal life, I wasn't able to meet that deadline. During the course of editing this video, my Mother was diagnosed with, and later passed away due to Stomach Cancer. It's been devastating for Me and the family, but I'm lucky to have a close family and support group to help me through it. I'm not fully over the grieving process, probably won't be for a while, but she was proud of my work and hobbies and wanted me to continue them, which is the reason I've been able to stay productive. Thank you everyone for sticking with me through these difficult times, I didn't want to burden the video with this sad news. Have a great day everyone, and be sure to tell a loved one that you love them. Corrections: - I used a pic of Thief 4 instead of the original. Oops. - Thief was initially from Looking Glass, not Ion Storm until later.

Great review, really enjoyed it! The part with Jock and JC's "a bomb" line is so funny so me. You've got Jock really acting it out, "oh my _god_ JC, a BOMB!" and you get this flat emotionless "a b_o_mb..." like he really doesn't care. I found it funny that the same guy voiced Paul, so any conversation between the two is essentially one guy with very slightly different voices...except Paul has emotion. JC is just a blank slate. You can see why Half-Life went with and stuck with a silent protagonist to be the blank slate.
@justanotheryoutubechannel2 жыл бұрын
I love JC and Jensen’s voices, the way they do sound so deadpan and blank is just comedy gold to me, but I can see why some games would want to avoid that since comedy voices in a serious game isn’t ideal.

Excellent. 3 major things I missed in some initial play throughs: 1) sooper sekrit underground lab in Hell's Kitchen 2) Lab with Grey Aliens under VersaLife. 3) Collapsed tunnel in Hong Kong with a couple of Karks. Hopefully one or more of these will be new to someone out there. None of which mattered. But made a huge difference when I played them. There will never be another DX. All of the other 451 games focus on mechanics and trivial choices about how to solve each challenge. Very, very cool of course, but they're not what made DX great. It was that amazing plot with the twists and surprises and the threads that split early and rejoined later. The game play and options were the icing on that cake. Warren Spector had a design doc 100s of pages long and it shows. Also, despite its length, there was a ton cut. I didn't like Revision. They made gratuitous changes. A hidden sniper who can always see you no matter what and head shots you is like, so, Beavis and Butt Head. "Heh, heh, his head like totally exploded. Heh, heh." You're all probably too young for Beavis and Butt Head. If all they did was to enhance the graphics then it would've been great. But given the amount they ruined, the hi-res textures and models are all that I find useful.

Another note, Silhouette aren't a part of the Illuminati, it's just that they are the most effective group fighting MJ12 in France and thus Nicolette managed to convince her mother to fund them with that sweet Illuminati $$$. They would probably be bitter rivals under other circumstances, hence part of why Nicolette joined them: to mess with her mother with whom she clearly has a love/hate relationship. Also fun fact: groups like Silhouette have and still do in fact operate in the Paris catacombs, there's a good 100+ year history of resistance/protest groups being based there, and if you poke around enough ingame you'll notice that the MJ12 troops are actually operating out of a (real) Nazi bunker. There's even a contemporary group who do everything from operating (literal) underground theaters all the way to sneaking into public buildings after hours through the catacombs, google 'les UX'. Historical references like this are just another layer on the massive glorious cake that is Deus Ex.
@kittenmittenkitten3 жыл бұрын
Also, Lucius DeBeers might not be a real historical figure, but his name is almost certainly a reference to the real De Beers group, one of those massively wealthy and powerful corporations that are a magnet for conspiracy theories. The most famous of these is actually in fact verifiably true: that they straight up manufactured the modern idea of diamonds being a symbol of marital commitment to, well... sell diamonds. Which they happened to have an almost worldwide monopoly on. You can probably see why they are referenced here in association with the Illuminati.

46:40 She’s Maggie Chow Mein now. ;) Also, alchemy _is_ science. It’s just an old fashioned term for chemistry, with the some of the goals including stuff the UC can do. Things like lead to gold are indeed real too, but it’s ironically not worth it: you need a particle accelerator and you only get a tiny amount of gold out of it. I don’t remember if it was molecular, atomic or at least large enough to see but certainly not the amounts what myths about alchemy and the philosopher’s stone would have you believe.
@KirbyLinkACW2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing! I first learned about alchemy Fullmetal Alchemist, and after doing my own research, it's pretty dang obvious that alchemy is science. Alsi, the Philosopher's Stone was mostly a metaphor used in the alchemy world (though I wouldn't doubt if some people actually did try to search for it). Like you said, it's mainly mths and fiction that gave it it's almost occult status.
@lionocyborg60302 жыл бұрын
@@KirbyLinkACW I learned about alchemy thanks to Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, but the fact it’s science is made more clear in the lead writer’s development notes and fixer mods that add missing stuff. For example, the bad guy is able to carry around hyper reactive purified elements in his weird glove to transmute any elements in his murder victims’ bodies to any other in similar places in the periodic table, leaving them nightmarish blobs of flesh and semi molten silver. He does that because he’s a vampire in all but name, needing to eat their thyroids raw and pumping to sustain his youth due to a cursed form of immortality he has and he also desecrates the bodies so to disguise him stealing elements he transmutes from their organs, both for eating and his experiments. He does all this to try and thaw a nephillim/grey alien Queen or warrior out of what can best be described as carbonite stasis.
@alewis514 Жыл бұрын
ye turning one element into a different element happens all the time through nuclear reactions. It's just on a very very very very micro scale, producing any measurable quantity of gold (or something actually very expensive like plutonium) would take orders of magnitude more investment than it's worth. We still produce stuff that we don't really need a lot of this way. Heavy actinide elements, like curium or californium that are used as targets to make completely new elements. Californium is an element with atomic number 98 and never occurs naturally, this is purely man-made stuff.

Plus I already have too many games I’m playing at the moment.” Trav: “My plot synopsis is going to be based on the route I *personally* took for this game, and I doubt yours will be the same.” Me: “I’m sorry, you said PERSONAL ROUTE? MULTIPLE ROUTES? Sign me up.”

If you manage to get Sandra to stay in New York (give her dad a gun and let him get the kill shot on JoJo) that soldier guy in the Underworld bar will be there on a date with her instead of just standing around alone. I always make sure to do this because it seems like a much better ending for Sandra than being a homeless drifter living at an abandoned gas station. Why do I even give a fuck about the fate of such a minor and irrelevant NPC? Because this game has _really good writing._

Great video. I remember playing this game when it first released when I was about 14 to 15 years old. I will be 40 this year, time passing is cruel for sure!

I m fighting a huge urge to reinstall, even though I went through GMDX last year (btw, play that mod!). One more thing nobody ever mentions- Daedalus/Icarus is very much inspired by Wintermute/Neuromancer from William Gibson's famous cyberpunk novel.

21:18 Holy hell, I never knew you could get into the ceil and TALK with the NSF guys! I wonder if you can kill Simons before he kills the NSF guys ... probably not physically possible.

Simmons is one of the handful of NPCs that's invincible until his boss fight - it's not an instant game over if you kill him, but he will hunt you down until you die

I love how every playthrough is little different, learning about all your possibilities, like how useful pepper spray and gas grenades can be or how that automatic gun with grenade launcher is great for "unlocking" doors, that having some food and drugs on you can help you to get info from kids and junkies.. On my last one (fifth I guess) I realised that you can unlock a lot of containers and doors in Unatco building by bringing explosives from around Statue of liberty and that the flooded tunnels in Hongkong can actually be accessed..

We need a remaster of the original deus ex and invisible war
@lionocyborg6030 Жыл бұрын
So far we have Deus Ex Revision entirely for free. We need something similar for Invisible War but adding stuff the original doesn’t have, like a skills system and no universal ammo. Bigger levels too, like something along the lines of Revision crossed with Human Revolution.

@@lionocyborg6030 Invisible War is a game that needs to be liberated from its console restraints. Give us lockpicks, a proper inventory, ammo variety and utility items.
@blackout2953 жыл бұрын
Some notes: -Hoping the invisible war video isn't just going to an unconstructive bashing of the game into oblivion. I mean I love all the deus ex games and while I see why someone would dislike or hate invisible war, it seems unconstructive to just call it bad and be done without some further exploration of the game. -I'd argue immersive Sims and rpgs are separate genres, the distinguishing feature between the two probably being how character interaction is utilized, given how the RPG elements in an immersive sim are in service of forward progression and almost exclusively environment interaction one way or the other, whereas something like new vegas uses these elements for both environment and character interaction.

Back in November after seeing hbomberguy's video on the third game I decided to buy it off steam. When I got to playing it December I proceeded to beat the game 8 times and this video makes me wanna go back to do a 9th run. Games amazing. Also if anyone is reading this look up "the ultimate run" It's like a culmination of every trick this game has to offer.

One issue I have with the game is that it has so many augment canisters, a far fewer augment upgrade canisters. I get excited when I see the glowing blue, then disappointed as I can't use them. I have what, ten augmentations? And only enough to upgrade the most essential like ballistic protection and regeneration. Trued out level 2 cloak, but it just empties my bio-energy so quickly.
