[I just returned home after watching the film, so here’s a fresh perspective] I couldn’t care less that it’s a remake, my biggest gripe when I stepped out of the hall was the repeated assumption that, as Jammy stated in the thumbnail, the audience is dumb and will accept whatever you have to show as long as the presentation is theek-thaak or passable.

The climax twist in "Mumbai Police" had that shock value at that period of time. I dont think it will be much of a twist in 2025. Also the friendship between the 3 police officers played by PrithviRaj, Rahman & Jayasurya was a key factor in making the story engaging, all characters were equally relevant.

The green car, the girl with the cellphone meeting Shahid in uniform, the chilli powder in the construction site and so many scenes in the trailer itself was a big giveaway that it's a remake. I don't know how to feel about Deva and Shahid Kapoor's trajectory as a star. As I have watched Mumbai police, Shahid did a great job and they have tweaked it a bit. If they have a star like Shahid Kapoor who's been in the industry for so long,why can't they be confident of the film and say that it is an adaptation of the director's previous work like how Prashant Neel was really honest about Salaar and it being a better version of Ugram... Why can't they trust the newer generation of stars except Ranbir Kapoor and partly vicky kaushal.

The original and remake displays the difference between how stardom works in both the industries- in the original, all three policemen were prominent actors acting together as a multi-starrer while in deva, its just one actor making other roles irrelevant. The director has shown what he can do with same plot in two industries with the industry politics in place. Maybe why he never did much promotion/interview from his end.

In this case i want to appreciate Prashant Neel and Prabhas who atleast admitted that Salaar was retelling of Ughram on a big scale with many changes in the storyline. Prashant Neel first movie Ugraam which was a good movie but tanked in the movie theatre . But he still loved the story he remade it as Salaar . The basic concept was same but the entire story was with grandeur with screenplay, violence, bgm , introduction of new characters, clans etc A much more mass movie. Just don’t remake . why reviewers are not reviewing the film as what they have watched and the aspect if it's a remake or not. most of the audience has never seen the malayalm film, and still the marketing like it's a remake. if you have watched the film then don't go. Yes, I can understand Jammy's frustration with the creators not being upfront about the remake. They should have simply called it what it is,.. a remake. Unlike Telugu and Tamil films, Malayalam remakes often work well in Hindi because 98% of Hindi audiences are unfamiliar with the originals and aren't particularly interested in exploring them. Even when they know it's a remake, like in the case of Drishyam 2, they’re willing to wait 2 years for the Hindi version, often making it more successful than the original. Deva will likely follow this trend and become another example of a remake outperforming its original.

After Animal, I got so disappointed that I decided to watch the reviews first before going to theatres...I was excited for Deva but knew it was a remake of Mumbai Police after reading it's plot.. But the teaser, song, trailer had me excited... I watched reviews of Flickverse, YBH, Bnftv and now I came to see My No. 1 Legit movie reviewer.. But after seeing the "Audience is Dumb?" thumbnail... It was a hit in Kerala, but no national attention. So, as far as I know, it is still a fresh story for most of the Hindi audience. If the movie is made good, it's good. Well, you’ve answered your own question by bringing up Drishyam. Unlike Telugu and Tamil films, Malayalam movies generally don’t have widespread appeal across the rest of the country. Even though audiences knew Drishyam 2 was available on Amazon, they waited two years for the Hindi version, ultimately making it more successful than the original. So, simply presenting Mumbai Police as a remake wouldn’t have hurt its prospects. So the hate is more about outright lying about it certainly leaves a negative impression and will effect the marketing and press interaction of upcoming films of Shahid.

Also the social media and ott was not that lit everyone will watch everything. Hence hindi Drishyam had the advantage to release as an official remake and hindi audience not having seen it...but for deva it's been 12 years since it's been made....if makers openly declare Its a official remake it will take the same fate of vikram vedha.....hence it was a smart move by makers not to officially market it as a remake.

I have seen Mumbai police in 2013 by excellent performance by Prithviraj. as a south Indian i can say that no matter you tell its a remake , the creators of the film will tell it is not a remake , because what films we saw 10 years ago north belt didn't even heard of these films at that time and due to lockdown the north belt has consumed entire films of each actor of south and languages due to Ott, the creators are in their own thinking the north hasnt seen these films

I feel, the constant denial of the remake matters, is more of a tactical strategy, something what we see in movies like Spiderman no way home, where tobey and andrew clearly kept denying their collaboration. And than there are cases of "Vikram vedha " and "Jersey" also, where the performance was good, but still rejected by audience because of the tag remake. I guess it is a new tactic made by the producers to make the audience come to theatre

I finally got a chance to watch this. I leaned over to my husband in the beginning and asked him "haven't we seen this movie before?" He reminded me of Mumbai Police. I did enjoy the movie and thought it was very good. It is always a joy to see Shahid Kapoor and he was fantastic here as well. That being said it also felt a bit safe like they didn't trust their audience to be mature or open minded enough to watch something that followed the original.
