*...with ships with a single turret bigger than them? Assuming your question is not rhetorical, because it's a game. In order to make it "balanced" destroyer's firepower is turned way up and battleship's are turned way down. If this were remotely realistic carriers and battleships would be super OP in the game. In reality, a destroyer would be blown in half well before it got within 3km of a battleship and it's tiny guns wouldn't do much other than mess up some of the superstructure and maybe scratch the paint on the hull. One of the few times a destroyer managed to take out a much larger ship was essentially the suicide run a fletcher did on a Japanese heavy cruiser managing to hit it with torpedoes and it didn't end well for the fletcher.

That Kearsarge would easily have been sunk. As I would be stealthy torpedo payload dropping on the Battleship carrier hybrid. I would avoid detection of course. That destroyer player is not a noob. But his move was rather a poor one.

If I shoot a destroyer with AP shells, it only overpenetrates and does very little damage. How do you recommend shooting lighter ships with AP shells and still do as much damage as you did?

If you fire AP shells at thinly armored ships, you deal 10% of the shell's penetration damage. If he's standing at an angle to you, you'll deal pen damage, which means 100% of AP damage. Destroyers do not have citadel, but German destroyers have thick armor. For this reason, you usually deal Pen damage and not Overpen damage to German destroyers with AP shells. I don't recommend using AP shells against destroyers, but you'll have to use AP shells if you don't have time to switch shells. Since the Cruiser have Citadel, I recommend using AP shells, as you can inflict devastating strike by damaging the citadel.
