We have such over population of deer, it is crazy. Plenty of place to hide, and plenty of food. Actually, the deer are one reason we need to do this. They eat a huge amount of our corn.

I always hate to see equipment being damaged but unfortunately sometimes it come with the job. I seen on the video Tim at one point when you were cutting that debris was flying forward under the tractor and was thinking, boy it would be nice if you had something to keep that from happening. Tim I have an attachment you need to try out! It’s called a tree slayer. I love this thing for taking down trees and brush with my mini. The price is considerably cheaper than the mulching heads and achieving almost the same results. Made like a bush hog, but way heavier duty you would not believe what I have taken out with this thing. I have taken down 16” trees with it safely.

@@lordchaa1598 it cuts in about 7”so I hit both sides of the tree. Dow it goes. The stump you can grind down with the carbide teeth that is mounted on the rotary part. Look it up on google I’m telling you I really like it. I think I paid like 5,000. For it way cheaper than 20,000 for a mulcher

Have a 1025R with the backhoe. Broke a hydraulic fitting off the cylinder that curls the bucket found out at the dealership the its not a threaded fitting new cylinder is $153. had it repaired at a local hydraulics shop for less cash.

Tim - Can you fab up a chain guard that would slide into the drawbar attachment point on the tractor? Pretty simple design - just a "T" with a wide "top of the T" that fits between your rear wheels. 6" or 7" pieces of chain hanging down that would stop or slow down any debris going under the tractor.

I think you might want to upgrade your protection setup. If you want to do brush work you have to prepare to do it. Loose hoses will not survive. Plastic can’t handle flying brush. That’s why I didn’t understand replacing the fenders cause I am always in brush and stuff. You need to get some metal guards. Additional chains hanging down to catch stuff. But you did great with what you had. Crash On!

I broke a similar fitting off the steering cylinder on my 4066M. I was doing forestry clean up and ran over a hidden stump. Fortunately, I was able to limp back to my shop spitting hyd fluid every time I turned the wheel. I bought a replacement fitting and two spares.

I use my tractor in my forestry services business. I had skid plates fabricated for the bottom of the tractor. It really protects the undercarriage well. I’m not sure if you can rent a compact track loader with a forestry mulcher.

The skid plates protect the entire underside and the left and right sides where the fuel tank is and the two hydraulic filters are located. The plates cost me $3000, but I still feel they are well worth the cost when working in the forest. The skid plates and grill guard have prevented damage to the tractor on many occasions.

Equipment repair is part of the job. When I owned a bucket truck, it was always requiring upkeep that was expensive. $4500 for rear brakes, $2000 for a single 1/2 inch hydraulic hose. Glad I got out of that business.

Tree work is just plain hard on equipment. Limbs and branches easily break flimsy unprotected hoses and fittings. Like you said, a skid steer has the vulnerable bits way more shielded and protected than a small tractor. But I think your making good progress with what machinery you have.

No. Over the years, the river cut its own new channel, and left this one. Over time the old one fills in, silt, erosion, etc. rivers often cut new channels, abandoning the older one..or sometimes using both channels. Water is amazingly powerful.

I have a Kubota with a center PTO. Would it be possible to mount the mulcher on the front of the tractor rather than twisting my neck all day, I'm 73 and it's beyond my ability.

This is something I have put a LOT of passion into. Unfortunately, none of the small tractor manufacturers seem to be interested in this. The mid PTO doesn't spin at the same speed as the rear. ...in some cases, it spins in reverse direction. There are very few front 3 point hitches on small tractors either. So far, my efforts to get this going have failed. There is a company that makes front 3 point and PTO for small Deere tractors, but they flat out refuse to work with me.

I don't understand how you sustained that much damage to your hoses. On my Massey Ferguson everything on the bottom is steel. I can't imagine that JD is running rubber hoses exposed under the tractor???

The steering hoses are not protected. The third function hoses are aftermarket…the Deere lines are hard-lines.

I understand a farmer's need to remove brushy areas in a field and take out stream bottoms and hedgerows to accommodate the larger equipment needed these days. I suspect in the long run, the only ones who really benefit are the equipment dealers. But it also pains me because I know that small game hunting isn't what it was back in the days prior to the 1970s. The heydays may have been the days of the Soil Bank when marginal fields were left fallow. Wildlife habitat is already scarce in farm country. I remember brushy stream bottoms as a place to scare up pheasants, grouse, squirrels, rabbits and a place for foxes and furbearer as well as songbirds. The wild apple trees were an added benefit. Those days are gone forever, I'm afraid in the name of progress. Field size back then were based upon what a team of horses could handle in a day. I witnessed the transition from horsepower to tractors and you can't turn back time, or can we? We may be forced to if fossil fuels are phased out.
