This is exactly what I needed! I have zero problem with any kicks except for round head kicks and I saw people on Sherdog saying they had the same problem with pinching pain in their hips and limited ROM in the hip for some freaky reason, no matter how much they stretch. They suggested this as a replacement for the traditional roundhouse. I've seen and read where athletes can have very different pelvis shapes and it changes or limitsthe ROM in their hip joints so they actually have to teach different kinds of squatting and deadlifting forms in competitive weightlifting depending on how open or narrow the pelvis is. I imagine it could affect your ROM on a high roundhouse kick too.
@aegisprotection49692 жыл бұрын
Good explanation of the kick. It also illustrates why I tell people the elbow drop defense (hunkering)is done with the body and not the arms. Done properly, the hands never leave guard. The body and legs do the moving.

One common mistake for question mark kick is that before changing directions you turn your leg to the other way before swinging it back, that basically telegraphs that you're going to do a question mark kick
@gmork1090 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. I made that mistake a lot in my youth.

This is great kick, I like it very well! I routinely use this after a left job-right cross combo. First, I step back from the distance and the partner step in to catch me up. He is just approaching, meanwhile he will see a starting front kick. Everybody pull down the left hand to block the front kick, and the head will be open..

@derekvandenburg66894 жыл бұрын
Nice explanation brother. If I could add a little tip/cheat, as I have gotten older the hips dont work as well, so to cheat this a little I tend to "catch" the top of the arm and use it so my leg can "follow" the front arm right up and over the shoulder to the chin. If that makes any sense.

@aginlikefinewine58613 жыл бұрын
I found the way to make this work on the heavy bag is to lower the chain for a slight lean in then you can get into the top of the bag mimicking a fighter overextended in giving you an opening to bring the head kick over in the end of said question or Brazilian kick

Dude this is such a fun kick to practice. And it feels better than doing nothing but roundhouses and teeps. Funny thing is without even meaning to I naturally was popping the kick out at head level the entire time, I think it's the quad position, that already has you aimed for their neck, whereas when I'm just doing roundhouses they can kinda come out anywhere in a 20° arc around the head. My goal was to try and bring it down, like to twist my leg so far that the top of my foot is coming down on my opponents head. But I couldn't quite make it and the closest try was causing my obliques to nearly spasm due to pulling the muscles so tight. Edit: ok after watching the slowmo I can definitely do it. Seeing that you can get your foot coming down like that. Ok I just gotta get my knee looser and swiveling more.

Love the vids Seth! I did a year of kickboxing as a young 20-year-old but dropped it after snapping my left patella during sparring. Anyway, during lockdown I've become addicted to yours, Icey Mike's, and other vids and I'm doing some beginner stuff on a bag. I'm now 49 and have as much bend and suppleness as a wheel-brace. Will general training practice and stretching enable me to achieve those head-height roundhouses at my age (pretty healthy, athletic build and slim) and if so how long might it take if I practice 2-3 hours a week? I can currently roundhouse to my chest height. All the best during lockdown mate and keep the superb content coming as it's among the very best around.

I love to use this kick, but Sensei how would you personally defend a front kick when you know your opponent uses the questionmark kick a lot? I personally block the front kick to the side with my elbow from a tight guard and then close the distance immediately so that someone doesn't have the room to make a questionmark kick out of his front kick. I would like to have more options though so please share your defense for this kick.

@VincentMMALife4 жыл бұрын
@@SenseiSeth That is true, but most of my sparring partners who use their front kick and their questionmark kick a lot usually try to keep me on a distance, so I try to get into the pocket with them. So backing up is usually my strategy for punches because I can close that distance quickly but not so much with kicks. Thanks again though. Btw Sensei I don't know if this is an idea for a video but maybe you can make a video on the do's and don'ts for using karate in MMA. Maybe which things you can or can't do in MMA in comparison to karate or which techniques you should use or which you should avoid.
