‪@WonderboyMMA‬ (Also, ‪@HoustonJones‬ is here!!) has some of the best side kicks in the game!! Side Kick is also one of my favorite Kicks... While Taekwondo (ITF Taekwondo and WT Taekwondo) both have effective Side Kicks and Muay Thai has the Side Teep, I still wanted to get to the bottom of how different ARE the different side kicks of Martial Arts! Wonderboy vs Jorge Masvidal made for some awesome side kickery and Wonderboy vs Vicente Lucque also lead to some awesome Side Kick knock downs so in this episode I try and figure out how to find out the most information on how to throw side kicks from different stances like the Muay Thai Boxing stance, and the Taekwondo stance! The Yoko Geri is prevalent in most Martial Arts but to be fair, I think the best variations from these Martial Arts Styles! (Also, I still hate the snapping side kick). I even get ‪@HoustonJones‬ to help me out with his 2nd Dan in WT Taekwondo!
Make sure you follow ‪@WonderboyMMA‬ and ‪@HoustonJones‬ !!

It seems to be a real rib breaker. I threw a sidekick on the blast shield that could knock anyone - even an NFL lineman across the room. But when my TKD instructor (a small 145lb 6th-degree master) threw his sidekick, it was like a bullet concentrated into a couple of square inches and it damn near broke my arm through the pad.

@@ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 That's rad. As good as that list is, Samart is still the best of them. Being an elite boxer or Thai fighter alone would be amazing, but he did both at the same time! I've seen him use that kick to pretty much shut opponents down completely.
@ellefsensbarmyarmy8491
@ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 3 жыл бұрын
@@Lymmar The list wasn’t meant as a ranking, it was just a list of well known fighters that it’s possible to train with. Being able to train with legends, or current day top-ranked fighters is one of the things that makes muay thai truly unique. Samart is arguably the best nak muay in history, but I guess that comes down to personal likings and criteria also. It could be Dieselnoi, it could be Apidej... or maybe Somrak? He was an Olympic god winner in boxing in 1996. The bronze medal in his weight class went to a dude named Floyd..
@Lymmar

@@ellefsensbarmyarmy8491 Oh I wasn't trying to argue at all. Sorry! Just got super pumped talking about Samart. I prefer the Jockey gym guys like Lerdsila, because his greatest weapon is just not being scared of getting hit. They all have their strengths, but I feel like on a purely technical level Samart is a genius, even if I prefer more playful fighters. Sorry about the misunderstanding!

Great video! The way the muay thai side kick was done with the foot striking at a 45 degree angle is similar to the way I learned the "cut kick" in TKD - just a quick pushing sort of side kick to the hip to get the body to fold and bring the head down, opening it up to attack, or the torso to open be less bladed, also opening it up.

Coming from martial arts then getting into derby (which, honestly? Multi-person combat sport) I really got to appreciate this. Each art is a frame of reference onto the problem of how to do damage (or control an opponent) without taking damage or risking becoming controlled. Each person then uses these frames to figure out how to achieve the goals with their body, their background, and their temperament.

Amazing vid, I love it! I'm no expert but it seems to me that these different techniques depend on the starting point of the kick: the stance. Wonderboy has a much sideways stance than a muay thai fighter maybe that's why his foot ends in exactly the opposite of the muay thai fighter, with toes down. Traditional TKD or ITF by any chance? I took Traditional TKD when I was in college and we did the horizontal chamber, but I recently got back into TKD taking WTF TKD to try and regain some of my lost flexibility and I've since changed to the front chamber of the kicks. It's been an interesting transition for me re-learning my leg placement.

Chung lee was a great sanda practitioner, but his side kick was heavily influenced by taekwondo.

I had he exact same thought. Those sanda side kicks reap through the middle of the guard and into the face. Strong and high. They may be similar in technique to TKD but the application is markedly their own. You just don’t see that in Muay Thai, MMA or tkd fights. This was a superb video but incomplete due to their omission

Okay, the TKD side kick was awesome. I throw mine with the same intention, disguised until the last second, and as a “punch”, not a move-em-back kick. Only mine is slower and not as good, and not as high, and worse-looking.

That chambered side kick where you pull the foot in for the chamber first, that’s probably supposed to be hooking the opponents front leg to disrupt their balance, than kicking them. Would only really make sense for a low sidekick though, disrupt their balance then kick the other leg.

The leaning the body back as a kick is delivered is called Action / Reaction in TKD. It's totally counter intuitive that pushing your body in one direction as you kick or strike in another direction actually works, but it really does! At lower belts, they don't really teach this, because the body can only do basic movements. They teach this at higher belts .. even for spinning kicks. It's always surprising to me how much increase in power this generates. Try it out!

my favorite side kick for just shear feeling of power was the stepping in side kick, though i normally like the stepping behind for breaks or stupid hard hits and was a nice way to learn to get your legs in position for maximum power. And the rechamber.. i ended up learning that one kind of a hard way when i would do board breaks and i left my leg out and it got caught between a bunch of broken pieces of wood and the board holders we had, shredded my ankle real nice. instructor was like, that is why you need to re-chamber.. it is leaving your legs out to be grabbed.. this time by wood. Next time it could be a person.
