my notes: How did the middle class develop? - Businesses are now run with three layers of hierarchy: executives at the top, managers in the middle, and laborers at the bottom - With the growth of managerial staff came new jobs like accountants, legal services, and clerical jobs - Women primarily worked clerical jobs with the emergence of the typewriter - These workers made too much money to be considered lower class, but not enough to be considered upper class. Thus emerged the middle class - The middle class had a shorter work day which left time for recreational activities - Spectator sports, amusement parks, circuses, and theaters find customers in the middle class - Andrew carnegie writes the gospel of wealth which inspires philanthropy - Carnegie put his money back into the economy by providing the lower class with opportunities rather than hand-outs - Phoebe Apperson Hearst, a wealthy women’s suffragist, invested her money into schools in order to provide equal education for all classes

Just a head's up, the thumbnail says 6.8, but the title of the video 6.10 (which I guess is the correct one).

why aren’t carnegie’s awful treatment of workers and unions mentioned? homestead strike? pinkertons? he was not truly a man of the people, just another billionaire putting on a show. his workers could never become middle class with the wages he paid them, nor could they use these libraries with the 12 hour work days. what he did to their union was terrible
