Hearing that bass guitar in black metal in doing it's own thing that's not too simple, but not too complicatedly technical as well is why it has its good low melodies. It reminds me on Ulver's "I Troldskog Faren Vild" where the bass follows along with the guitars with most of the song, but at one point it does its melodic part which really stands out to be one of my favorite part on bass.

Hauntingly beautiful use of natural minor in the ascending pattern for the transition work. With bass, depending on the riff in question, it can be tricky to take various liberties, but here the melodies are done to excellent effect. By the way, the audio quality was uniquely great, given that you used stereo tracks.

I found this very informative and educating. Im not really a black metal player or even a real black metal fan tbh. But i like using these types of riffs/chords to my own playing. As a bass player, it is sometimes difficult to find your place with metal in general, even the bass tone in general. I myself usually start with the same guitar riffs(most time root notes) and build from there. Thanks for enlightening us👍

Very cool. Nothing more I hate then when bass guitar is drowned out and that generally happens when the bass player is doing the bare minimum to bring low end to the song. There are some very good players though and I personally don’t believe you need to be a musical genius to add solid bass lines to the song. Necrobutcher’s bass lines are often simple but he’s loud and has a very unique tone. The flip side to that? If you want to hear pure Black Metal bass mastery it’s B.War’s playing on Marduk’s “Blood-Fire-Death” trilogy. Finger picking and all over the fretboard! His work on Panzer Division is incredible. For me in my band, I write most of the music on bass, then flip it to guitar chords, give it to my guitarists and they will turn it into something more interesting. I’ll learn how to play it on bass exactly how it is on guitar then once I “know” the song, I’ll go back again and play with ascending/descending notes, where I can switch a single note into a power chord, especially if I’m using an Overdrive and find places to hit an A chord which is just thunder splitting the ground and smashing through the guitars. Everyone says “listen to jazz and blues” fuck that. I’m almost 50 years old, I’ve been having a good time playing and it’s never been anything but Black & Death Metal and of course classic stuff, thrash and some old punk like Discharge. If you love heavy music, listen to it, figure it out, plug in everyday and play hard! Open the gates of Hell with volume and tone! Fuck what everyone says you’re “supposed” to do and make heavy evil sounding shit that resonates with you!!
