The thought and engineering that went into that Abus is impressive. Especially since it doesn't sound like it has flaws similar to the ones other companies introduced when making their products easier to service. Nor does it require a special order Bavarian Gerfumbledinger tool, like an old Audi, in order to do basic service. It's elegant in it's simplicity.

Just remember, it doesn't matter how skookum your padlock is if the rasp is held onto rotten wood with two screws.

I was just going to say something like this. $250 lock, $10 pane of glass. Which one do you think most common burglars are going to attack? You know, the ones looking for cash, jewelry, medications and small electronics to sell for a fix.Those are the last people to pick a lock lol.

@@MrV1NC3N7V3G4 There is special kinds of glass that cannot be broken. It has been around since the 80s. They had good clear glass too. I bet they have really good unbreakable glass now.

Tip for amateurs, like myself: pill dispensers work really well for pinning. Take a one week pill dispenser, file off the letters, use a sharpie to indicate lock brand, fill with cheap pins from ebay.

I don't think thats going to be a long term solution. Plastic can easily crack so an unforseen in incident can happen in the future

@@kurogane2x, it's fine for amateurs. All of my lockpicking gear, including new pins, stays at home. If you travel with it or compete, it might be worthwhile to spend more.

FYI - The Abus 83 series offers a KIK adapter kit so you can put in any KIK cylinder you want. Such as a Primus...

Just wanted to say that thanks to watching your videos I have just taken up picking even though I have only been doing it for a week or two have already got it down to opening 3 padlocks in under 20 seconds even though they are only master locks and even have the confidence to start re pinning locks.

Good to see you mention that the Primus key will enter the standard C keyway, next time maybe mention that the C key will not enter the Primus keyway. That feature has some practical use. I’ve been using Primus for 25 years and love the system.

Hey, hoss! I'm still a total novice/amateur regarding most of this stuff. But, I have expanded my knowledge on the subjects by Orders of Magnitude since I happened to stumble across an old Defcon video on KZbin about a year and a half ago. I just wanted to say, Thank You!! The information you put out here for people is extremely interesting, fun, and Valuable! Personally, I love learning about anything adds to my "Jack of All Trades" kind of knowledge base. There's that old saying, "A Little Knowledge is a Dangerous Thing". And I'm fond of pointing out that I know a *Little* bit about almost Everything, Lol. Cheers🍻, and have a good one. Thanks again.

The Abus 83 series is one of my favorite padlocks. Between the variety of body designs and shackle sizes you can configure them to fit almost any door or container and the design of the removable core (and the KiK adapter kit) means you can adapt them to almost any keying system (even Medeco or Mul-T-Lock, though I have yet to get an Abloy in one).

I dropped by a locksmith to ask about getting all cylinders on our house keyed alike (needing three different keys for the house and another two for the sheds is a hassle). Here in Sweden it seems like the they only sell seven pin cylinders for doors and such these days.

Quick question: In case you'd have to remove the lock (ABUS), you could just drill by that little hole and the cylinder would just drop out, right? Or would there be say hardened steel pins in the locks body as an anti-drill mechanism?

You didn't mention that the 83 series actually come with a spring, spool driver and cover to populate that sixth position. I personally prefer the Americans though because of the thicker shackle. But what I've really been searching for is a puck type lock that takes SC1/KW1 or KIK. Do you know of anything like that?

Does the removable core make it more susceptible to slide hammers? Would using a titanium cylinder housing cap and retaining screw make that substantially more difficult?
@DeviantOllam
@DeviantOllam 4 жыл бұрын
i think titanium is not likely to be much better than the steel. while Ti can do amazing things in terms of strength to weight ratio... the cost is huge. this has enough steel in the deadbolt housing to prevent that kind of attack, i'd wager.

Unfortunate fun fact. American no longer produces Schlage FSIC padlocks. Sesamee also stopped producing theirs. Abus is the solution for that for now, or Krytonite, or Schlage makes padlock bodies as well. LAB makes security top pins only now, not key pins, at least not in that kit factor, which sucks. I've never been able to get this pin kit either!

That 3700 looks like the body will open with a moderate amount of physical attack... not that there's anything to attach a padlock to that would withstand a couple minutes of overt tooled attack.

I know you said it was good enough, but i can't help but cringe and not using that beautiful high cut on the 6th cut after that low cut. Yes it's already challenging but that last cut has so much potential for a truely devious challenge lock.
