I had this operation done over 26 years ago and it did help me breath easier. I did a lot of snoring and in addition to the surgery to repair the deviated septum I also had my Uvula removed with a laser procedure all in the same day.. The doctor told me beforehand that the Uvula surgery would give me the worst sore throat (For 10 Days)that I ever had in my life and that statement was 100% spot on accurate. Not a day sooner than that 10th day should you expect any kind of relief. It don't go away gradually over the 10 days it just was gone on day 10! Just had to add that in case anyone is doing both at the same time. The deviated septum part is painless really but the biggest problem I had was dealing with the packing up both nostrils and not being able to breathe thru my nose (Not One Bit) for 3 whole days as that is how long the packing has to stay in. On that 3rd day I'd had as much as I could take of the packing and inability to breath thru my nose and couldn't wait to get down the office to get them removed. I was tempted to pull them out myself but I didn't and don't suggest you do either.. What a feeling when they pull out that packing GOOD LORD I thought he was pulling out my brains, but it felt good to get them out.. Once they are out you have this weird smell and I'm guessing it is from the medication that was on the packing in combination with the old blood from the surgery. Once the packing is out you'll feel so relieved and recovery begins. Not bad.... You will pull out some hard blood chunks in the next day or so once you start breathing thru your nose as you breathe it will dry the blood that is in the nasal cavity...... I still had 7 additional days of the worst sore throat but it's all good today some 26 year later. Hang in there and stay positive. Just think of the benefit of being able to breath when it's all said and done.........................Jim (Phoenix_AZ)

Currently on my 4th day of surgery - rhinoplasty + septoplasty. My nose is full of blood + slimy stuff, packed with silicone splints and I want to blow it SO BAD. Can't wait another 3 days to remove them... The splints irritated the inside and now I have to take antihistamines. Just wanna pull the little fuckers once and for all!!

Be careful with this surgery. Although it helps some people, it wrecked me. The septum is the support system of the nose---if the doctor removes too much septum during surgery, you get nasal valve collapse---which means your nose caves in and cuts off your breathing. It makes sleeping a nightmare. Also, the surgery is done too often. MOST people have a deviated septum--but most people don't have breathing problems. That tells you that you can have a deviated septum and something else could be causing your problems. Surgery should ALWAYS be the last option. Don't go through an operation you don't need just because a doctor suggests it. Make sure---you're the one who pays if he's wrong.

I only had to have the packing in for 24hrs. I started sneezing (as much as you CAN sneeze when you have your entire nasal cavity packed tight) 14 hours post surgery and had to go back to the hospital because it was slowly coming out...I literally couldn't stop sneezing because it was tickling me, they gave me enough medicine to nake me sleep until I had to have the gauze taken out. The gauze that they pulled out was 3 feet long. Not a fun time for sure. But totally worth it.
