He came back to the island of dmc2 cause there was a demon causing mayhem (the demon was Balrog) so Dante used Cerberus. BUT in a shock moment, Cerberus sadly got broken into pieces. R.I.P Cerberus. (Also he defeats Balrog and that's how he gets that weapon)
