Devil May Cry is MORE Than Buzz Marketing (Phantom Blade Zero). I am sensing a new emerging trend in soulslike (Dark Souls Clones) marketing which is to base the entire fundamental design of the new action game on the Dark Souls formula (which is completely fine), and then sprinkle in a few surface level mechanics from character action games like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden and then claim that these slight inclusions radically sets the new game apart from its core influence of Dark Souls. I think the concept and practice is perfectly fine, but what I think is really important to point out and discuss is how fundamentally different the design philosophy of a game like Devil May Cry 3 is from modern action games being released now and what fundamental elements are being completely overlooked and have never been properly evaluated in mainstream game reviews. The Style system of the Devil May Cry series is especially overlooked and is seen more as added flair than a core game play concept that needs to be taken a lot more seriously.
There is a recent gamesradar article previewing Phantom Blade Zero that primary inspired this video because it claims that Phantom Blade is "30% Soulslike and 70% character action." Which is not remotely accurate in my evaluation based off of the preview footage we've seen. I can always be surprised of course, but so far the seeming lack of any in-depth real time style system to contextualize the combat is already disqualified from that statement, since Style systems are Core Content for any Character Action game.
In this vid I also cover the context and history of the Devil May Cry series which has its roots in arcade games (a strong passion of mine, obviously) and how the structure of the entire concept is to marry together three distinct genres that Capcom themselves pioneered: Fighting Games, Beat Em' Ups, and Survival Horror. I'm a much bigger fan of the first two genres of that list, but I do think survival horror also has a lot of really interesting ideas in its own right. It'll be interesting to see what I think of Phantom Blade Zero when I actually get my hands on it, and it may be a great game in its own right, but as of right now I'm highly skeptical it will at all resemble character action classics like Devil May Cry 3 or Ninja Gaiden 2 in its core design.
