I personally never understood the complaint of "Too much Side-content." Just don't do if you don't want to. I can understand being a little annoyed at Side-content when it's introduced into the main story, i.e., Dondoko Island, when replaying, but it's usually not very long when skipping cutscenes. I really don't understand this complaint with games like Infinite Wealth cuz you you don't even need to play all the minigames to get the Platinum Trophy.

The complaint is more from people trying to go for the 100% completion, and getting walled on some bs (like the Cat Fight RNG Hell).

The JCC is the only minigame here that got me gamer mad. Learning that it's pure RNG made it worse, even the button mashes scale with yours so you could have a turbo button and still lose if you get unlucky sucks. For completionist sake at least Shogi has the puzzles that count toward completion that you can grind out quickly and later games just give you an item that gives you a bot to play for you (even though it takes like 2 minutes per turn.) I think Mahjong has circled around for me where it was the most frustrating thing ever but after doing it for so long I enjoy it now (except for the times you have to go out with a specific hand.) Shout out to CyricZ for making the 100% achievements a lot easier.

The fact that the Riichi Mahjong tutorial in 51 Worldwide Games helped me understand it in 5 minutes, compared to the 3 hours I spent trying to figure it out in Judgment, shows how much the Mahjong user experience needs to be updated for the western audience. The game can be a lot of fun once you fully understand the basics. EDIT: Also the Mahjong AI in Yakuza is absolutely insane on all difficulties. Why does the easy table declare riichi within 3 turns!?
@TovarishTony
@TovarishTony Ай бұрын
I could tell what tiles the AI often use as a winning tile but not as common as actual players in Mahjong Soul like not all players use their non seat wind(any other wind but East) as the winning tile either a triplet or a pair. Sometimes the AI in any Like a Dragon game is just bullshit level of lucky like either they defend like crazy or gets extremely lucky by suddenly pull off a Riichi Ippatsu aftter you or someone else called riichi a couple of turns prior. If only RGG learns from other mahjong platforms like Mahjong Soul in terms of teaching new players how to play.

Yakuza 5 still has the same fishing minigame from 3 and 4, but it’s a separate minigame from the “QTE”-type you see in Ishin and Zero. I remember this because one of Shinada’s Master/Trainer challenges is to catch a specific large fish to learn a new move. I legit spent at least 90 minutes with an elevated blood pressure trying to catch this particular fish. Don’t remember what fish it was or what move you got, I just remember it being one of those >100m fish and being relieved that it was over. In retrospect, I’m starting to understand Leon’s grievances with Y5 (because the 1h+ video wasn’t _quite_ enough to surpass my unconditional love for Shinader)

I only became better at mahjong because of Mahjong Soul. Ichihime does teach the fundamentals better considering theres so much stuff in mahjong thats not explained well in any Like a Dragon game such as basic tile efficiency, 5 block theory, tenpai, needing a yaku to win(some people ask why cant ron or tsumo despite 4 sequences/triplets and a pair due to no yaku), etc. Shogi being much harder than chess despite I do play the latter due to lack of queens while only 1 rook, 1 bishop plus the complex ranking system. Also pieces like lances and generals too.

I grew an appreciation for Mahjong when I wanted to get the platinum trophy for Kiwami 2. I still go out of my way to play it in most RGG games as a way to earn easy cash, and I even play it frequently in Final Fantasy XIV. The most frustrating experience I had with a side activity were Saigo's stupid training missions. I managed to do them all in yakuza 4, but gave up about halfway through in 5. I still don't understand why they gave those missions to Akiyama, the person who doesn't have an use for his teachings. Saejima would've made more sense. What was even more frustrating in 5 is that this was the only unique side activity Akiyama had, while everyone else got a plethora of other things to do. If I had to pick a minigame I had the most frustrating experience with, it'd be Toylets. I don't know how bad it is right now, but when it launched on PC it was impossible (or next to impossible?) to beat it. I was very close to 100%'ing the game, but this minigame killed my interest.

As someone who completed almost all of RGGS games (except IW which i had not bought it) I definitely has some opinions about these mini games. Of course if i were to comment on ALL the minigames, it would need to print out a book. These mini games are ones that i ENJOYED mostly. Mahjong - I am fortunate enough to learn how to play this game WAY before playing the Yakuza games. The RNG on mahjong can be as vile. There was once the round just start and one of the AI declare richi. And there was once all 3 AI declare richii all at same time. So i can understand why some Yakuza fans hated mahjong with a passion. JCC - Hot sweaty ladies fighting in their lingeries?? What's not to love? I understand it is purely RNG. But mostly, i just choose the blonde or stewardess and that's it. Gambling games - win big and if you lose, just reload the game? One of my fav is Oicho Kabu using 10-10-1 item. Golf - Just gonna describe the remaster Y3-5. Somehow i felt the controls in Y3 is the best among Y3-5. But this is just my opinion. The later games such as 7, LJ are the best of course.

Disco was fun, but challenging. I loved it up until the point where I was trying to do every substory. Fighting Ogita made me want to boot up Yakuza 5 and rush through the Climax Battles just so I can adjust his face to the pavement in revenge. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Robotics Club from Lost Judgment. Although I guess it's similar to Mahjong in that it's not as tedious if you give it a chance to learn properly. For me personally, it's part of the reason why I don't attempt LJ Amon.

I like the Hostess Club one, but Mahjong is where it's at. Mahjong is like Gin Rummy and Poker combined. If you don't know what Rummy looks like, I can suggest checking out some videos and you may spot some similarities to mahjong. I do agree that the whole mahjong scoring system is huge.

I didn't like pocket circuit, because its pretty much hostess Club (not management) for boys. Its goofy seeing adults be so engaged in this seemingly childs game, but it doesnt change the fact that I had to use guide every single time.

Skill Issue Seriously, though, you really were just bad or impatient. Pocket Circuit is all about understanding the track and then building a car for that track. It's basically a puzzle game.

@renotv3860 yea I understand not wanting to engage with the mini game if it not your type of thing, but there a reason people like it cause it fun to figure the puzzle piece of each car part to beat the races.

I've played 0-6. The worst ones in my experience are Pool, Catfighting and Pachinko. Pool because the sensitivity is broken in the Remastered collection while also being difficult against tougher AI/courses so it's a complete disaster. Catfighting because the AI literally cheats and fast button mashing doesn't help you win, it only prevents you from losing sometimes (I used a third-party pad with a turbo button). Pachinko because it's 100% luck while also taking a long time to clear everything for completion.

In all my years of playing yakuza the disco mini game was always the one that i love and hate at the same time, all of the songs are bangers but as for the mini game itself i agree with you on it, its kind of hard at first but once you get the rhythm it'll be easy to learn, however the substory part of the game frustrated the hell out of me especially the ogita disco battle and the one against isobe, i remember looking everywhere on both yakuza forums and reddit and see if there's a strategy i can use to complete their substory and i had mixed answers, its either setting the difficulty to hard and hope that they mess up halfway or set the disco difficulty to easy and pray that they mess up from the start, and by the end of the game i never went back to the maharaja

Maybe it's stocholm syndrom but I actually grew to really like Mahjong through Yakuza that said the completion requirements for it are still utter PITAs in every game. a lot of pure luck and heavy amounts of it are required even if you know the game like getting Riichi Ipatsu and a good enough hand for some of the score requirements, even knowledge and skill at the game can't do much to mitigate the luck required for those if it was just limited to getting a certain amount of winnings it wouldn't be so bad but the fact that they overstuff it with some of the most secondary goals of all the minigames is ridiculous. Even the most fleshed out minigames and side content frequently have less secondary goals compared to mahjong it's crazy

yeah, I love Mahjong, but I would never really want to learn it in Yakuza. Now that I learned it elsewhere, I can go play it in Yakuza and have a blast. But then I also liked the Yakuza 3 and 4 Fishing, and also loved the disco, so I don't know how good of an example I can actually be.

Very cool vid. I admit I was quite surprised seeing the disco on the list here, I'm fond of it myself, but yeah it can be tough. As for side activities I wasn't fond of, I would def. pick shogi since, for the life of mine I just can't figure it out, the hostess manager from Y3/4 given how tedious and obtuse it is and probably Saejima's Dojo in Y4 😉 Dodonko Island would be an honorary mention mainly because it's a bit imposed and it just feels overwhelming for a kind of side content I would not go out of my way if it wasn't included in IW. Welp, they can't all be winners I suppose 😉

The issue with Riichi Mahjong in Yakuza is that they don't really explain the tactics. Keeping the hand closed as long as you possibly can (unless you can make a set of dragons, since that is worth a han by itself), and playing conservatively in regard to discards rather than playing for the big hands when they're not on. Honestly, I would recommend people learning the basics of Rummy as the two games are very similar. On the other hand, the cpu players at a high level are kinda BS, and Yakuza 2/Kiwami 2's side mission regarding it was BS, because my pride was not gonna let me cheat even if it was designed with the intention that I do that.

Unpopular opinion: I don't like VR Dice and Cube minigame from the Judgment series, RNG sucks ass (even after the upgrades, especially in Judge Eyes). In the first game they decided to make it the ONLY way to earn money in huge amounts. and you know you needed that cash for those SP drinks so. In Lost Judgment thank god they didn't make us depend for money + SP so. But my god it was still painful to play it so It has a really cool idea, like the Kuronyan Mode but I'm not bothered trying it at all so

yakuza is the reason i learned mahjong and im glad cause it becomes fun once you know what you're doing. but i understand how annoying it might feel having to learn whole game just for clearing the completion list. i still cant bother with shogi cause i suck even at chess and shogi has way too many options for each move. luckily in many games you can clear it from completion list by just grinding same shogi puzzle i wouldnt say hostess club is frustrating as its more tedious and boring for me fishing is the worst for how grindy and random it is, i just skip completion list if the game has fishing involved

I'm a completionist for this series so I'm well versed in the minigames. If I had to pick a least favorite I'd have to go with a lesser known one from Kenzan. It's a card game that requires knowing Kanji and Hiragana. I found a image that shows the answers but the AI is crazy fast in picking the right card making it almost impossible. Also I actually really like Mahjong and will play it for early in the game for money

The only reason I like the hostess maker in Yakuza 4 is because I wanna keep listening to Elise background music. I love that track along with the customization track as well. Fishing in 3 and 4 was shit. I'm so glad it was simplified down in modern games. Never had an issue with dancing in Y0 but it wasn't a fun game, despite loving rhythm games. I think I preferred the versus battle dances in Y5 instead... or implementing something similar to Bust a Groove for instance. Now, THAT would keep me glued to that mini-game! I simply can't get into Shogi, but Majiang... man, I have spent entire hours in each and every game playing Majiang and winning the local tournament just for bragging rights. It's still too RNG'd as any gambling game, but yeah, if you learn how to make your hands, it's pretty awesome. Oh yeah, and for all the hostess club minigames I always get a guide. It's so random getting to guess the girl's responses I'm like fawk it, GameFAQs!

As someone who likes chess, I would prefer they add actual chess as a minigame alongside shogi, which is often referred to as Japanese chess. As there is check and checkmate. Obviously shogi will always be in these games since they are based in Japan. But if they have more games set outside of Japan (like with infinite wealth) they should definitely add chess as a minigame whenever your outside if Japan. Hell you could even have real Grandmasters make cameo appearances in the game while playing chess. Would be even cooler and funnier if Gothamchess cameos in a yakuza game tied to the chess minigame. 😂😆🤣

About mahjong: I have completed it in a couple of yakuza games for 100%, but it's still a pain in the ass, even though you're trying to make a hand, sometimes it feels like a terrible rng. "Easy table" was way harder than "master table' or thatever name it was. Also in my first time playing Y0 I was farming money by playing JCF, but it's a terrible idea as it's not only about rng it's a terrible script of AI overmashing you. I hate it with every fiber of my body. Also I hate pachinko in every Yakuza game.

Only minigames i can think of that i think are frustrating mostly just because of in game 100% challenges that you didn't list would be stuff like Puyo Puyo because of the defeat all rivals challenge. The massage parlor in 3 & 4 because the challenges basically requires you to always be near the top and with how often the game fluctuates going up and down and with how easy it is to press mostly the button for it to go up too many times making it an instant game over and having to sit there until you can play again. The courtesan shootem up game in Ishin is another one most people wont complete mostly because of that final stage. Toylets in Kiwami 2 is annoying since some people find it hard to match their opponents stream and people on pc had to lower their fps to 30 to even have a chance at winning.

Forgot to mention SpikeOut from Infinite Wealth in game 100% list. The fact you have to do almost 2 full runs because you have to do all levels including the secret ones. The fact that you have to do that as both Ichiban and Kiryu for the full in game completion definitely makes it annoying.
