@Lectric_Blue4 жыл бұрын
@@Qwerty-ks8dn This is your opinion, NOT a fact. Empath was conceived, written and recorded by Devin for Devin himself, not for his fans. It's music that describes a journey. That journey was and is Devin himself. We are not supposed to like it, it's not for us. He has done loads of albums for those 'other' reasons, but this is not one of them. If fans like it, great. A lot of fans like anything and everything that their idols put out, and that's ok too. Personally, I find it hard to connect with Empath. It doesn't resonate with me, but I do love 'Why?' For me it's the best track on the album. But...... that's my opinion, and no, it's not a fact either! ;-)
@Qwerty-ks8dn4 жыл бұрын
@@Lectric_Blue Are you copy-pasting what Townsend's been saying in all the interviews? You need to read between the lines more. You're suggesting he made all the other albums for "others" and that is asinine. The most you could say this of is "Sky Blue" and "Transcendence", definitely not the other albums. Besides, since those two albums are 50 times better than "Empath", perhaps we can conclude he's better at writing music for others than when he's being overly self-indulgent and undisciplined.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this video since Ive seen it, and the subsequent...twentyish times I've rewatched it. There is INTENSE, profound meaning at the heart of it. There's a concept in alchemy (and also jungian psychology): “in sterquiliniis invenitur," latin for "in filth you will find it." In other words, the idea that what you need to find will be in the place you least want to look. Our guy here gets a brief hint of what the void really is (unfiltered by the ship's window) and throws himself headlong into the center of it. And what does he find when he reaches the center of the void, the thing that everyone else is running away from, is scared to face head-on? He finds HIMSELF. And he embraces that part of himself that lies at the center of what he initially wanted to escape, and becomes more than he was before, what he truly is.

I get stuck on the feeling of understanding what it's like to be stuck somewhere you don't want to be (the ship/with these people in the video) and then the free feeling of him dancing on the exterior when he breaks out. Don't get overwhelmed. I'm a composer myself, believe me it's so far from Bach and Mozart like Earth to Saturn. It is indeed a great little song but nothing more. It takes only about a few hours to compose such an easy song. The orchestration was really well made it take a bit more time but that is it. It is the vocal part which way nice, but in terms of artistry it is not even the same league.

I can't stop playing this song. Dev is Dev, he does his own thing and he really is a creative genius, he has no rules and has such an incredible voice to back up his songwriting talents. Seems such a shame that after like 25 albums and such devotion to his craft that he is not comparable to many chart topping acts, life does seem unjustly fair sometimes.

Devin Townsend is an absolute site to behold during a live performance. He's truly something special and I've never connected with any other artist as much as I have him. Empath is without a doubt album of the year for me, nothing else can top it! Thank you Devin for never failing to uplift!!

This type of song can only be composed and performed by a genious who is brave enough and have the backbone to do it! One of the very few musicians in this day and age who can pull this off . Enormous respect to Devin Townsend to make this wonderful music (that goes for the whole Empath album)

I discovered Devin Townsend about a week ago on these here tubes of you, and now I've got two tickets to see his show in a couple weeks! I can say without a doubt that there is definitely a pre and post discovery point of his music in my life. His work seems to make everything else just... less. Not really a good way to explain it, I know, but there are no words. His music hits parts of my brain all at once that other music only hits in small pieces here and there. Feels like I am just hearing "music" for the very first time, ever.

When this song came on the first time listening through Empath, I forgot where I was and what I was doing. I thought, "Wait, is this a musical?" I still feel that way now. This is a song from a musical. And I hope it gets a new generation of metalheads into theater.

@@colbyboucher6391 good point, I personally don't think this particular song is metal, but I think the whole career of Devin may be considered in the metal side of music, the labels not always works with certain artists 'cause it put limits on them.

I got To speak to him the other weekend here in Melboutne. He took a comment I made as a big compliment, that the album seemed he could have collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Disney. So awesome to see the Disney comment made by another. I call this one especially his Disney Song. A scene from sleeping beauty plays in my head and morphs Into Disney metal and just looks awesome. I can see the album being turned into a theatre/stage/operettic show. 😍🌈💖 Love all that this man creates. He's a brilliant chanel.

This dude needs to make a musical..... either for screen or stage..... or both. His music is far too epic to be solely contained in the metal genre in audio form. I mean the music videos are solid. But could you imagine a full length production of, say, the Ziltoid album? Just listened to Punky Bruster. My how Dev has changed, haha. Been on a Townsend kick the last 3 days. I don't know why I'm getting so into his content so much nowadays. Maybe the older I get the more I appreciate the complexity of music and the grandness of his newer content. I mean I was introduced to Townsend in his Strapping Young Lad days. Once they disbanded I pretty much moved on. Turns out I've got a lot of catching up to do. Feel like out of fairness I need to buy some of his albums on google. I mean I think I've only listened to Transcendence and Empath about 5 times through, each, this weekend alone, haha. Take my money Dev, and keep churning out these musical genius compositions of music. I see why they call your style "the wall of sound"..... it's not the metal I'm used to - especially this track - but it's just so damn powerful and hits you in the face causing massive eargasms. My ears need a cigarette.
