the more often you listen to this song, the better it gets
@futureshockxl5 жыл бұрын
The song starts in 2/4 times before moving to 5/4 double time. But the first 4 beats of the 5/4 double time minic the 2/4 structure thus completely disguising the time change until well after it happened. Holy moly, I had to listen to the song like 10 times before I figured that out. Sheer genius. In just the first minute of the song, he moves from 2/4 time, to 5/4 double time twice, then to 4/4 and the 3/4 choral section. My brain is in a state of intense euphoria.
@TheMysticS695 жыл бұрын
Thank you for telling us! I am not as able to figure these things out, but it touches me the same way
@Boomer.Roberts5 жыл бұрын
It's really more like 5/8. So in the beginning, we get four bars of 2/4 and then four bars of 5/8, and then the same thing repeated. But later on during the lead up to the "chorus", if you can call it that, it gets a little different, where instead of four bars of 2/4 and four bars of 5/8, we get three bars of 2/4 then three bars of 5/8, then it repeats but does three bars of 2/4 and four bars of 5/8. Then in the actual chorus, it's back to the same pattern as the intro, with four bars of 2/4 plus four bars of 5/8. Very interesting choice. Also very interesting is that the 5/8 uses strong beats on 1 and 3 (so you'd count it like ONE two THREE four five, or ONE two ONE two three), which is relatively less common in my experience than strong beats on 1 and 4 (ONE two three FOUR five, or ONE two three ONE two), so despite me being pretty familiar with odd time signatures, this one still throws me for a loop a little bit because my brain doesn't normally expect 5/8 to have that pattern. Love this song!
@petegrusky27155 жыл бұрын
@@Boomer.Roberts just before second chorus it sounds like you can measure it in 16 . In half becomes polyrhythmic ... Or maybe just my imagination :-?
@Boomer.Roberts5 жыл бұрын
@@AdvertisingGiant Not sure where you learned that, but it's entirely wrong. That's not how time signatures work. The top number represents how many "beats" there are in each measure, while the bottom number represents which kind of note counts as the "beat" in a measure. So for a basic example, 4/4. You get 4 beats in each measure, and you count quarter notes as the beat, so 4 quarter notes per measure. Similarly, 2/4 would be 2 quarter notes per measure. Following this logic, 5/4 just means you have 5 quarter notes per measure. For an example of a well-known song in 5/4, check out Money by Pink Floyd. Having said that, I still maintain that this song by Devin doesn't actually use 5/4. But your explanation is definitely not correct.
@futureshockxl5 жыл бұрын
@@AdvertisingGiant Actually, a time signature is not a fraction. The top number is the number of beats in a measure and the bottom denotes the symbol given a whole beat, so 5/4 time says there are 5 beats per measure and a quarter note receives a single beat. So 5/4 is absolutely a real time signature. You could also choose to transcribe it as 5/2 double time which would keep everything as quarter notes. 2/4 5/4 looks like Q-Q H-H-Q, 2/4 5/2 looks like Q-Q Q-Q-Q-Q-Q. 5/8 would be a mess because it would change both the time signature and the beat delimitation.

This song definitely requires a few listens (Especially with some good headphones!) to unwrap and digest properly. I hear so many beautiful sounds and melodies in the background and seem to find new parts on each listen through and through... The melding of the Elektra choir and Devins voice coming in and out during specific lyrics may not be intentional, but is an example of how much Devin can tap into a persons spectrum of the mind and each others own experiences. What may be confusion to some can be absolutely majestic to others.... This is majestic to me. Peace to you...

I feel like between Devin Townsend, Steven Wilson and Opeth the entire spectrum of progressive is covered... There really doesn't need to be anymore done. They do it so well too, I used to be in an progressive band but now I think I might as well just make acoustic music since that is another one of my passions.

Devy, you can tell me what you want. You're not from this planet! Your music amazes me everytime. Can't wait to see you live again! What a song!

Amongst the last things I ever expected to see in a Devin Townsend video was a vinesauce reference, letalone Joel.
