The Spector sound is best described as a growl, the harder you push it the more it growls. Best examples of the Spector growl not mentioned Rachel Bolan on Slave to the Grind, Monkey Business Tracey Wallach from Icon's Night of the Crime, listen to the beginning of Whites of Their Eyes Kyle Kyle from Bang Tango, not sure if he used it on Psycho Cafe or not but it is all over the Dancin on Coals record, Cactus Juice would be the song. Watch Kyle play on a live video from Count's place in Vegas a couple years back, watch his right-hand switch from playing with a pick, to slap and finger style and back to a pick so fast you will argue with me that he even uses a pick at all.

When I graduated up from my first cheap beginner bass I went straight for a Spector. It was 2002 and I got a brand new NS-CRFM5 (Czech Republic Flame Maple 5 String), which I had to special order because they were pretty rare in Australia. The music store actually ordered 3 of the same model in different colours and 5 months later when they arrived (which let me save up my pennies) I got a call from the shop and was able to come in after hours and they let me try out all three freshly set-up basses to pick my favourite. That amazing VIP treatment was quite befitting of the bass itself, which I still have today!

Look closely at Sting's Spector. There's a big-ass block of closed-cell foam jammed up under the bridge. It's still on that bass hanging on the wall in the rock & roll hall of fame. Sting said Spector gave him one & he tried it out for the Synchronicity tour but moved on after a year or so. Scott did a really cool video on damping (it's not quite muting...) with sponges & whatnot. After watching that I went to the hardware store & grabbed about 4 or 5 different squishy things, from a rubber doorstop to foam pipe insulation. For me, the natural sponge gave the best results.

Lately got me a Euro 5 classic and IT CRUSHES EVERYTHING! It's not the most comfortable bass I own and the neck dive is significant, but it was worth for the MONSTEROUS SOUND. I got around that neck dive problem by installing light weight tuners and re-locating the upper strap button more to the south. i think the secret to Spector's sound is not in the PJ configuration, since mine is a JJ and it sounds pretty much the same, but rather the neck through design plus the sunken hi mass bridge that no one mention. this gives the bass tons of sustain and clarity. O, and mine is white like Sting"s so it's a show stopper when I pull it out. Beautiful bass.

C# is his dropped tuning…. Rex tuned in D#+40¢ on CFH, and dropped one and a half steps further down for TGST.

@@MainelyW212 C# standard is not dropped tuning. Drop C# is.

@@MainelyW212isn't the consensus that "dropped tuning" means the lowest string is a fifth lower than the next, which the rest following the normal intervals?

It’s in Standard C# 425, no Drop D, and that isolated track was comprised of:: One Clean Cab, one Dirty cab= Favoring the Dirt Cab.. It’s all in the mix boys & girls!! Thanx Fella’s, I’m flattered🔊🔊🔊!!

I’ve never been a huge fan of the blended PJ sound but the reverse P seems to fix that for me. I may need to save up for a Spector! Have you guys tried Reverend basses? I don’t think I’ve seen them on the channel. I have their Mercalli 5 and it is a mainstay. It has a unique sound but yet classic and familiar. Keep up the awesome work, I love SBL!

Spectors are by far my favorite basses. Peavey cirrus and Fender P come close, but an NS2 will always be my dream instrument.

The guys at Bass direct are awesome, amazing bass collection and accessories and lovely lovely people, had my first go on a Wal there, sadly I couldn't afford it but definitely worth the hype

Love my Spector bebop. I know it bolt on and soapbar, but it still makes that signature Spector sound.

I've played a tonne of basses including boutique while shopping around in the past and MIA Spector was definitely my favourite... But I couldn't afford it even second hand. Tightest 5th string as well with the extra long scale if 5 is your thing

Wimbish geek here and i think Doug is playing a Jazz bass on "The Birthday Party" which is from 1981, but that's ok 👌👌He did go through a Warwick phase as you say in the late 80's / early 90's (still playing his Spector though alongside the Warwicks) and I saw him play with Tackhead at that time with a Thumb and 6-string Streamer. I think he uses a Warwick fretless on Tackheads "Stealin" which you need to get on your channel; slide harmonics on that are amazing. He also used Spector and Warwicks early in his tenure with Living Colour on stage and there's footage on KZbin of him using a Streamer live with Bomb The Bass (bass on The Air That You Breath is amazing + his solo on Sandcastles).
