Yes. Cliff had an entire life ahead of him and was already the band's biggest influence in terms of musicality. If he had survived, I believe that the band would've evolved so much more as they carried on, and there's no saying just how legendary cliff could've been as he aged.

@gbenselum Gotcha. Cliff was advanced beyond his years, mostly due to his attitude of "either I like it or I don't", which greatly influenced his writing. And I love Newsted and Trujillo independently of 'Tallica, especially after meeting someone who knows the Trujillo family. Nothing but love to you, bro. ❤️

Most skilled, he can’t even play anastasia (pulling teeth) correctly. His version is slower and has less notes. If we’re comparing skill, if you can’t play something another person can play, I think you lose hands down. If you don’t believe me, search it up and compare cliffs live version in the 80s to Trujillo’s tribute.

Sorry, I have to quote my friend on this deba: "When Cliff died, they buried the wrong Metallica members." Cliff was the heart and soul of Metallica, as evidenced by the output post-Cliff. "...And Justice For All" was the last of the Burton-penned songs, and post-Burton was more simplistic than prior Metallica releases... leading many to suspect that Burton's classical influence was primary to the Metallica "Big Four" sound. Once they shifted to a pop-centric metal sound, it didn't matter (to them) who played bass. Especially since they hadn't truly mourned Cliff's loss. Jason was a remarkable bassist in that he retained his sense of self in the midst of Metallica using him to mourn the bassist integral to their songwriting. Jason is amazing, doesn't matter if in F&J or Echobrain. I wish that his bass was louder on AJ4A, but I'm grateful for what he's contributed no matter if his compatriots agreed. But Cliff is the main songwriter that gave Metallica fans what they truly love. Robert Trujillo needs no justification; his legacy was cemented before he joined Metallica. But Newsted needs recognition for post-Metallica work and Lars needs deflating.

As a newstead enjoyer i can confidentially say that the reason as to why he was always the butt of many jokes back then was because he was constantly overshadowed and treated like s*hit by the rest of the band, while cliff on the other hand was praised because of how "good" he was as a person. Bassists themeselves usually have the reputation of being considered usless or lazy, and even tho this is not a certainty, Metallica for sure contributed to that idea because no one inside the actual band gave any credit or value to their respective bassists overtime, all of them except for "good guy clifford". Even tho he was a way better bass player than lemmy from mötorhead, he's got the same reputation, he's good because he's famous (and edgy), not because people genuinly care about his actual bass skills.

Of course the others had more time to develop their skills and style than Cliff, but that does not at all make the others better. None of them stood out like Cliff did. To those who are putting Trujillo first he is skilled, but he hasn’t or can’t play anastasia (pulling teeth) correctly which makes him definitively less skilled as that’s one of the most technical bass pieces for Metallica past and present. In his rendition, he plays it slower, and with less notes something you do when you aren’t skilled enough to play at full speed with all the notes. This isn’t even including my personal bias of enjoying playing cliffs, baselines the most as their overall more technical than the newer shit we all remember when Metallica just turned down the bass levels. those who say I’m just glazing cliff I’m realistic he’s not better than Les Claypool, or Jaco Pastorius but he’s definitely the best Metallica has to offer.

Any answer other than Cliff is simply wrong, I'm sorry. Thats not to say the other guys dont rock and kick-ass 🤘🏻 they absolutely do. But there will never be another Cliff Burton and that bus driver should be in the cell UNDER the jail.

Cliff Burton's influence on bass playing and his unique style are indeed legendary. Each bassist brought their own flavor to Metallica, and it's all part of the band's rich history. 🎸🤘😄
