Originally the title of the song was "groupie".... the carpenters were the top U.S. hitmakers of the 1970's... classic pop songs, many top 10 hits and others in the top 40 and top 100... she was a world class drummer and her brother a world class pianist who sang back up and did all of the composing and arranging of their songs, they did all of the background vocals themselves using a dubbing technique. She sang and recorded this song "superstar" in 1 take! reading the lyrics off a napkin! and only 21 years old at the time! her voice then and now is considered one of if not THEE greatest female pop voice of love and romance songs of all time! surely the most pure, rich, intimate, warm, movingly beautiful voice you'll ever hear... she sang TO YOU NOT AT YOU!..

I’m in tears this morning listening to her. It’s so tragic that her insecurity of her looks is what eventually killed her. It’s such a shame that she couldn’t see what we did…..A truly beautiful, talented and sensitive woman. RIP Karen 🙏

Karen also plays the drums. When they started out she played the drums while singing. Then they decided she needed to be out front when she sings for everyone to see who has that beautiful voice. Such a loss at a young age.

Actually the lead vocal was supposed to be the DEMO, Karen sung the lead reading the words from a napkin…. She sang it so well that Richard decided to use it on the single… She was also a TERRIFIC jazz drummer, she plaid and sung at the same time… watch RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS, it’s an AMAZING SONG

The most beautiful voice in all of music’s history in my opinion! She passed away only a month away from her 33rd birthday on February 4, 1983 from heart failure due to over 10 years of anorexia. If I recall correctly, she was the one who brought eating disorders out into the light. She went in for treatment for it in 1981 and was still doing amazing with her recovery. She had been staying that week with her parents in her childhood home and was getting ready that morning to spend the day with her parents. When her mother thought she was taking too long to get ready, she opened her bedroom door to check in on her and found her on the floor. She was taken to the hospital and the doctors did all they could do, but it wasn’t enough. Her heart had just taken way too much damage over the years. I grew up listening to her with my grandmother who just adored her as did I. So many fond memories with her songs. I just wish she was here today so I could tell her how much her work meant to us. ❤

The song was written Leon Russell, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett from an idea from Rita Coolidge and extra musical additions by Eric Clapton. The relationship closest to the song, that of Delaney and Bonnie didn't end well after five years of marriage due to drug addiction and physical violence (from both to each other). This Carpenters cover is probably the best version of the song, with Karen's haunting vocals and Richard's keyboards and brilliant arrangement.

I have been listening to Karen Carpenter since I was 4 years old & I'm an now 56. My babysitter had a Carpenters LP & I would have her play Rainy Days & Mondays several times in a row! Knew all the lyrics! There is another song I use to sing with my cousin. "Yesterday once more " There is NO ONE like Karen Carpenter. No one. She is a skilled drummer as well. Her brother wrote most of the lyrics and piano. That's why when someone calls me a "Karen" it's a total compliment. Please react to the two songs above.

I always imagined this song like this ... This girl, well person, because it was written by men but has been sung by both men and women, was just a fan of this group/artist, but she recognizes the song each time it comes on because of the guitar playing, which she really loves. Even though it's only on the radio, she imagines everything she is hearing as being directed at her, by a single person, and the singer is always promising "I will return", "I love you", etc. However, it was never really HER they were singing to ... it was just a song, probably written for another person altogether. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it !!!
