In 1977-78 I was working at a local record store, Penguin Feather in northern Virginia. Somehow through record store contacts we were able to have Bad Brains play a party at my house in Falls Church. What a wild, crazy party that was. Dr. Know slammed his guitar neck into the drywall in my basement while playing. I have great memories of those days.

I'm not much of a punk guy, and I know very little about classic punk, but this is an intriguing little feature. I appreciate the varied range of tastes you have, John.

Wow Bad Brains I didn't expect . But a very underated band that influenced a lot of musicians.

Great record! The first three Bad Brains records got a lot of play time when I was in high school. Never understood the banned in DC thing though. I grew up there and they seemed to play regularly. Eventually, they may have tapered off, but I suspect that had to do with HR's mental illness.

I discovered Bad Brains when i was in university, and i was not a punk guy but the record resonated strongly because it has do many facets to it. Another suggestion for me is NomeansNo - Wrong , it’s a canadian punk band but they are jazzy, folky, and many other things but i still give high praise to that album…

Killer track. The one that got me on this date is "Re-ignition",which I played constantly. That and Suicidal Tendencies "Institutionalized"-whew! Brothers from another motha...

Wow, what an awesome review! That song brings back memories of an old tape playing in my walkman while I was treeplanting in BC Canada (89?90?)...my punkrock friend with dreads down to his butt turned me on to Bad Brains (and many other cool bands!) What's extra crazy is that I literally looked up this old friend on FB just YESTERDAY.. (there's a lot of Chris Murphy's out there lol).. we had a lot of adventures!

The dbx 120 sub harmonic synthesizer really helps with these old rock albums, maybe not pure ,but more fun.

Your description of the band and the sound of that track do not mesh. Will give the album a listen but I was expecting to be assailed but heard more Greenday than Rammstein.

Check out some older videos of them playing live. This record, and Rock for Light, leans more toward the mellow side. Live, HR seemed to be in the air more often than not.

Play their self titled first lp, or their first ep Pay to Cum if you want to hear the proper HC manifestation of Bad Brains. IagainstI is a good record, but doesn’t touch their earlier releases in terms of intensity and musical cohesion.
