Thank you Br Phap Dung, deep sincerity comes through you, I have never appreciated humour in the context of spiritual expression until listening to you today. Maybe my Roman Catholic up bringing while grateful was stifling to real spiritual growth. At 74 I'm still learning and appreciating life through different lenses. Arohanui from NZ.

20:22 the statement he made about being so concentrated on meditating that the man didn't see his wife, resonated very deeply with me. On my path i tried to meditate as well since the earnest urge was there. I wanted it so much that i dissociated out of my body for a good ten years or so. I thought that's what being spiritual was about. It took multiple awakenings and waking up to the hurt i caused others to realize that dissociation isn't it bc we are blind to our environment and self hate isn't it either -- balance, detachment, being in the body appreciating the gift of life And being aware of your divinity. Some people experience self centeredness in the form of ego when they selfishly pursue spirituality thru knowledge only, not seeing others experiences and hurting themselves in the process. I can't tell you what the truth is bc you have to experience it for yourself, it's like a big puzzle of suffering and questioning. But once you reach the knowing there's no going back.and it's so beautiful...

One thing the Buddha is quite well known for is the ability to use a word/concept of the time and turn it around to accord with his awakened experience of reality. A skilful means to explain how he saw things... And in this way to bring people to see more clearly too. For example karma. In Vedic times, in brahmanism, it refered to "work" or "deeds" to be performed (i.e. through rituals). One had to do his duties (go to a priest, make offerings and have a puja / sacrifice performed), to have good results in this life and in the next. So the Buddha kept the word but explained it very differently (emphasizing the personal responsibility and ethical quality of all actions, and furthermore the motivation behind it as karma, as producing a corresponding result). Now wether the idea of karmic retribution according to one's action (other than rituals) was present before the Buddha is unclear. It seems plausible because various schools held various opinions on the matter. And some upanishads assign some morality to karma, but their date is uncertain. For sure the Buddha explained it in more details. And in any case, if a pre-existing concept was in accordance with what he had realized, the Buddha kept it and made it part of his teachings. Now how much is from the Buddha, how much is from the tradition... It seems plausible also, and likely, that under this umbrella "skilful means" a number of new ideas have been introduced and accepted into the teachings over time... To suit / benefit people and needs of each time and place (or sometimes to compete with other spiritual traditions). This is what modern scholastic and objective research could sort out and demonstrate. In this regard there has been lots of progress in the last few decades. Perhaps in meeting with the West in particular. Thay himself has done a lot of work in that way 🙏

Stephanie M Really? How? Rather the buddhist path is one of practice and personal experience. The Buddha did that too, he practiced, experienced something quite special it seems, then he shared it.
@y9w1

Stephanie M It's ok, just leave it aside then. No need to worry about that 🙏🌼

Stephanie M Well I think in brief I said that there were some ideas around Buddha's time in India, like karma, rebirth, etc, and the Buddha kept some of them. It became part of his teachings. But not with the same understanding. He often gave it a different explanation, according to his experience of reality. There are discussions nowadays, in particular in the West, wether these teachings are still relevant... Or if they really are from the Buddha... Difficult questions and I think this talk tries to address that to some extent. I hope this is more clear 🙏🌼
