I have both of these ladies. I used the standard gray skilsaw worm drive for several years when I was younger and framing for a company. When I went out on my own, I bought the Dewalt, just because it was something different, I really like the ergonomics of it, and I noticed that my very first cut. I added the longer cord shortly after buying it. The Mag 77 and a jet table saw were set aside for me by an uncle when he passed because his kids aren't into this stuff and there were a few tools that he deemed special and didn't want them just sold, and he knew that I would appreciate them. (we did a few personal projects together over the years) The Mag 77 gets used, but it doesn't get brought out on a site where someone else might use it, which is probably 70% of the places I'm at. It's only for sentimental reasons, the saw is as good as always.

Having used both for several years each, I would give a slight edge to the dewalt saw. The negatives you mentioned have never been a problem for me. A little bit of care will protect the plastic parts, which are very robust as plastic goes. Admittedly, as a deck builder, my saw sees less abuse than in my framing days, but the dewalt saw has never come up short compared to the Skillsaw. Thanks for the review, good video.

Thank you for the review. You mentioned that you are intrigued by the new DWS535B, the one with the electric brake. Do you have one now if you do I hope you can share your experience about the performance of the electric brake. I am thinking about choosing between the DWS535B and Makita Magnesium Hypoid Saw. The Makita is lighter and no oil is needed but it does not have an electric brake. The Dewalt is heavier but does have an electric brake. I am more keen on safety. My Milwaukee 2730 20 6.5 inches saw does have brake and I like it.

A worm drive saw isn’t so amazing if you’re a lefty. Years ago I trained myself to be an ambidextrous cut man. I still prefer sidewinder motor saws for ease of use and left handed ergonomics, but once you can use both hands with any saw you’ll be respected as a beast lol

@@CatusMaximus I have a porter cabke sidewinder with the blade on the left side. I also have the dewalt worm drive from the video. The worm drive is for cutting 2x plus or ripping plywood. The sidewinder is for light duty. Nice to have the option and both be left side blades. I have never met a cordless circular saw that I liked but I think I’m going to give the dewalt a shot

I’ve got the USA made skilsaw, used it for years and has stood the test of time. Not ever getting rid of it, the new ones are made overseas, not sure if the quality is the same as I haven’t used one.

nice review, subscribed...i have sidewinders from just about every big time mfg, and ended up using an $18 skil that was on sale--didn't like the trigger safety, but weight and balance was superb. just ordered the latest (i guess) dewalt worm drive dws535b--similar to the one reviewed and will compare to makita and bosch worm drives. don't have the skill 77 mag cause they really never go on sale, and they are not the saw they once were prior to chinese mfg

Dewalt makes a dual bar ripfence for that. I like that. Maybe I'll get the dewalt dws535b

I have never been around these. I can see how their lengths would be an advantage on long cuts.

@@CatusMaximus I changed the threshold on my front door. My house is built of rough cut lumber. The hinge and latch board were cracked up. I used a regular circular saw to rip down 8' lengths because it was what I had. It turned out fine but I wished I had something better. Table saw especially, worm drive saw would have been far superior to what I used. I guess inferior tools can make the grade if you need them to. Door turned out great. To retain the hand made old door which is not a standard size I replaced the wall material about 8"around it using my ripped lengths of lumber. The worst part is now you can't tell I even touched it. Some might say that is a plus. I prefer work that my efforts can shine. In this case I guess I should just be glad it works properly.

I have that Skillsaw, and it has been rock solid for 30 years and still going strong. I'm curious to know why the news ones aren't built as well...lemmie guess, made in China these days?

I just received my first Dewalt Worm Drive Saw. Can someone please answer does it take regular motor oil, a Mixture like my Lawn Mower. Please Serious and Knowledgeable answers only. I LOVE this channel and at the current moment running off used tools, took a Huge Hit financially. Will get back to buying new stuff soon, with help from good solid guys, like the ones on this channel. Thanks
@CatusMaximus Жыл бұрын
These saws take a very heavy weight oil like 200 hundredweight I would use skill saw oil or you could use a diesel engine additive like power punch but it needs to be extra thick and on this you fill it to the bottom of the inside edge of the hole it makes it a bit more complicated than filling skill saws
@J.T.19134 Жыл бұрын
@@CatusMaximus Thanks for the answer, and I always support your videos. You have been very helpful. It's tough tools are rapidly advancing, but some are real junk. Does Dewalt sell a oil or Skill that can be put in this saw. Or am I better off going to my auto mechanic cousin, n asking him for an oil like you described. I'm very knowledgeable with the stuff I know, but the stuff I know is limited. I was #1 Guy for a small company in Cape May NJ. We don't have Unions. So we do it all, from footers, to Roffing, but Maintenance is something I never had to worry about. Unfortunately the owner took his life, but his parents want me to carry on the business. Ill probably just sell tools and buy the Skill Saw. I like the Dewalt. I had never used a worm drive saw. I had a regular Busch. Ill look into it. Thanks again

You say that more homework would need to be done by dewalt. Would love to see you evetually give the new flexvolt a hard supper. Seems to have addressed some, but not all, of the issues you flagged. Possibly the premier saw currently on the market, but would be interesting to know if the champion is the new guy on the block or old faithful.

I have both the rear handled and sidewinder flexvolt saws, as well as a mag-77. The new blade left rear handled, direct drive Dewalt is very powerful. Balance could be better, and it’s a little on the heavy side with a 12.0 battery IMHO.The sidewinder is just as good if not better than dewalts corded version. Overall I’m happy. I use the Dewalt if working off the ground. Wouldn’t get rid of my Mag altogether though.

I've owned every brand out there. The new skill mag 77's suck imo. Nothing compared to the original. The dewalt is my favorite. Never any problems in the three I have, and the plastics not having broken down to 30 below weather. The mag makita is pretty good, but the switches go out quite often, and they seem a bit under powered in frozen wood. Bosch had a great worm drive without the cord attached, but now you can't get one except if you want the annoying twist lock deal on them. The blade lock partly engages and grinds on the skill 77 when I use the rafter good to hang them on trusses or horses. Skill sure went to the dogs.

@KansasScout Just my two cents worth ,in Australia the lightweight Makita sidewinder is used by 99 % of carpenter's, doesn't wear you out from all day use and then for long rips in hardwood and beam work the 9 1/4" Makita is used nearly everywhere .I have never seen a wormdrive saw in Australia.
