For anyone wondering, the screw inside the chuck is a T20 torx head. I didn't have one so I used a 5mm allen wrench to loosen, worked fine for me. I had to wack the bigger allen wrench several times with a hammer while tightened in the chuck to get the chuck to come loose from the spindle. But it will come loose with some persistence.

Also note the DCD777 model I have (serial# 079659) has neither allen, Phillips, slot, nor Torx fitting. There is a proprietary method for attaching the chuck creating planned obsolescence so you need to either find another method to remove the screw or buy a whole dang new drill/driver. Thanks Dewalt.

There is a T20 inside the chuck on my dcd778 , once the Loctite cracked the screw came out. That is where this fix stopped. The allen key next step doesn't work short of beating the drill to pieces. Replacement will be Milwaukee not Dewalt.

Great video, everything comes apart without trouble but sometimes the left hand threaded retaining screw won’t budge what do you do? Dewalt have a lock tight coating on that screw which binds it solid. I found slightly tighten it first then undue then tighten and then undue each tine it moved a little this breaks up the lock tight mixture which crumbles off. After it moves a little WD40 helps to get it out. The head of the socket screw is a torx 20 T20 make sure you use a high tensile one or it will bust off in the socket. The Chuck is a standard right hand thread 1/2 20 unified thread never grip the chuck externally with grips. Only use a large Allan wrench in the Chuck and give it a strike with a rubber or hard faced plastic hammer. When replacing with new one of old one back hand tight only with the Chuck. The retaining screw should be a new one or re apply a lock tight. Clean out thread first with solvent.

Ok mine has a very large Torx opening behind the retaining screw. I don’t have an Allen torx wrench that size but it looks like you just are clamping the Allen wrench with the chuck anyways. I tried that and put the speed on 1 and hit it with a hammer and it just jumps about 180 degrees and is still very much on there. Should the drill be in reverse? Should it be in neutral? What should the torque setting be 1-15 or drill ?

As much as hate the smell of WD40, I just sprayed inside down on the screw head and around it. A little here and a little there I think is better than just spraying the snot out of it in fear of harming any other parts. Stand or lean the drill upwards overnight and maybe later up in the day. Making sure your screw driver bit is in place on top of the screw, tap on it several times and then try to torque it out. No luck repeat the process. It WILL come out. Don't let it get ya.

I put a vicegrip plier around base of chuck, put drill facing down and hit vicegrip with hammer a few times and came out with spindle. Your video is a bit misleading. Your process will work fine on a fresh brandy new out of the box light duty drill but not on one that has seen years of hard use like my 1/2" 3 speed heavy duty unit with metal gear box. A sharp rap with a dead blow hammer? Try chucking up a 1/2" allen socket & hammering on using a 1/2" drive pneumatic automotive wrench. Still no luck but I will get it off somehow. Another video used a chop saw to cut off as much of the old chuck as possible and still had difficulty. That will be my next approach. Remember, if someone put it together someone else will figure out how to take it apart.
