Here we try out two of the biggest SDS plus rotary hammers on the market: the DeWalt DCH417 Vs Makita HR008 (GRH08) (DCH416). Now there are a few versions of these, firstly with the American names for Makita and then the versions with quick-change chuck. So this testing also covers the performance forDCH416, HR009, GRH09. What's better, Dewalt or Makita? let's find out!

Yes! It would be much better if you put the top performing sds like the milwaukee 2915 vs these badboys face to face...

Love to see the big 4 matchup. I guess I'd like to see a full sweep of 12mm, 18mm, 24mm, and 30mm, but those 30mm bits are expensive. Only other thing would be some sort of measurement of vibration at the hand on each. Some of them claim to have vibration reduction, which may hinder their performance.

Yes to vibration! I got a new sensor that's much easier to attach than the old phone. I actually tried it on these guys but need to work it up a bit more before I'm confident in the measurements

Ok, here's another idea that won't require $1k in SDS bits. Test all 4 with a 26mm bit, but do 10 holes back to back, then show a graph of hole time vs holes drilled. See if any of them fade as the motor/mechanism gets hot. Ideally attach temp probes to the motor's stator as well and add that into the plot. Ideally you'd get them all on 18V 8Ah equivalent batteries, but that's not possible with flexvolt. The 9Ah FV is much more powerful than an 18V 8Ah. The 6Ah FV is about the same power, but less capacity, so performance could fade from battery depletion.

What about the XGT batteries, Does the high output 4ah have higher current than the 5ah normal? I looked on Reddit but couldn't find that specific info. In the manual Makita actually recommended using the 4 or 5 ah on this drill, presumably because the vibration might break the rails with a bigger battery

@toolscientist 8 күн бұрын
@BoltahDownunder are you talking XGT 4Ah tabless (BL4040F) vs 5Ah tabbed? Tabless probably wins, but in a long run test the extra capacity of the 5Ah might help as the voltage should stay higher for longer.
@BoltahDownunder
@BoltahDownunder 8 күн бұрын
Yep that's the one. I'll probably get another battery in these eofy sales and just wondering which way to go .I was thinking the 5ah as it'll make testing sessions easier (I recharge when they get to 3 stars) so if there's no major current advantage to the tabless battery I'd take the extra runtime

@BoltahDownunder slightly better going by T&S vid from 9 months ago at 20:01 mark. It may be even better than shown as he did 4 runs (4Ah, 5Ah, 4Ah, tabless 4Ah). So tabless 4Ah had the hottest tool (copper increases its resistance at 0.4%/C). I'll try to direct link vid below, but YT often memory holes comments with links.

which Makita would you buy HR008G or HR010G? price is almost the same where i live. usage is drilling mostly smaller holes 8-12mm mostly. since price is almost the same i thought getting HR008G but i'm not sure if it not too much heavy...
@BoltahDownunder
@BoltahDownunder 7 күн бұрын
For small holes you don't get any real advantage with the 008 and in fact it's a liability because as I showed the high impact force means it's harder to control and can damage the surface if you're not really careful. It's also 2.6kg heavier more than double the size, and very different application than the 010. The 010 is designed for mostly drilling holes around 8-12mm (though it can handle up to 20mm), whereas the 008 is the biggest SDS+ they make, for holes more like 16-20mm (max 30mm). It's really good value for the 008 if they're the same price, but it's a really big thing to drill small holes with

@@BoltahDownunder thanks for the profound explanation i was thinking to get the 008 because it's a great deal but I think I would go on the 010 since I'm worried about the wight. How about drilling a deep 16mm hole will the 010 do it ok ?
@BoltahDownunder
@BoltahDownunder 7 күн бұрын
It could do it occasionally but if you're doing that a lot the bigger drill would be better. If you look at this video you'll see what the 010 and also the 001 are like kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKjFmZeBisyHnrc But it's better if you can go into a store and hold them yourself. The 010 and the 008 are very different tools, the smallest and biggest SDS plus in the 40v range

Good video as always. One thing I’ve been wondering about for some time is how Bosch and Milwaukee can make big tools like these running on 18v, whereas Dewalt and Makita feel they need to make them run on 36v or 54v. Does the increased voltage translate to less current and therefore thinner wires? Or is there some other advantage? I know that Bosch at least are using the 21700 cells (procore) in batteries for these tools, and more recently tabless cells in procore+. But Dewalt and Makita are using this as well, so not quite sure what the deal is. Delving into some of this would be interesting, as it doesn’t seem like Bosch for example are struggling more with runtime than Dewalt and Makita even with the smaller voltage. I don’t recommend digging into this as deep as ToolsAndStuff did on his channel though, as he actually set a battery cell on fire 😅

There are others better equipped to answer than I, but in general yes you're right. Power=volts*amps, so if you start with higher voltage you can get the same or more power into a motor with less current. That means many things, like you can have thinner wire on motor windings, and/or better electrical efficiency. I found this with the Hikoki 18 vs 36v hammers and was really surprised how much more efficient the 36v was, around 20%. But really it's a strategic decision for the whole company. Like, how will customers react to a different, incompatible range like Makita's? I think everyone will be moving towards much bigger cordless tools to rival petrol, and Makita's 40v range makes a fine 80v option for them to replace petrol engines. DeWalt's flexvolt batteries switches voltage mechanically, so is that something that's hard to make, or is it going to fail often and cook tools? Or be a warranty problem? Since they've made a whole new giant tool platform it looks like they had enough issues with the flexvolt stuff that they didn't want to try to make really big stuff in 2x60v format. It could just be down to battery economics. If you're making 60 or 120v stuff then using a million 18650s doesn't make sense. And you also don't want clowns plugging that giant shit into their tiny impact drivers, cos you know they will. Bosch & Milwaukee seem to be betting that they can keep making technological improvements long enough to keep their 18v platforms competitive, and so far yeah they have been. But I have no idea what Bosch is going to do about petrol replacement, is their 36v platform still around? Regardless they make everything from dishwashers to ebikes, so I'm sure they'll have something that can be easily repurposed into really big tools

Higher voltage means you have a higher ceiling of what the tool can do, or in this case what the lineup is limited to do. SDS Plus rotary hammers are not that power hungry but SDS Max are, and so are angle grinders and Outdoor Power equipment. That's where higher voltage really shines and 18V and below pales in comparison. Makita went all in with their 40V lineup because they haven't released new battery technology for their 18V LXT batteries (stuck at 18650 cells) and they identified those batteries were maxed out so they tried the LXT x 2 experiment on higher powered tools but it's far from ideal due to weight and packaging. Some tools like the drills and impact drivers don't benefit from 40V but they want to offer the whole package. There's also this thing about Dewalt's battery compatibility so they don't need to develop a whole 54V lineup since those batteries will also work on their 18V tools. Amps translates to runtime and runtime will depend on battery size but also what the tools' power draw is.
