I purchased the DW a few years ago and assembled an entire kitchen of cabinets including screwing fixings to the wall studs. I got used to the twist motion very quickly. I also had to replace all the outlets in my son’s large home after a flood and it saved me with all the screws to be done. I use it for tool and appliance repairs etc. and just about all medium duty work. It is probably the most used tool in my extensive shop. I do use it for driving screws into wood for hinges and door furniture. It even drills the holes using 1/4” shank drills. But when it comes to construction screws in heavy work then obviously I go to the impact driver. So many small screwdrivers are 4 volt but this one is 8 volt, It makes a big difference. About 99% of the time I use it in pistol grip format.

The DeWalt is my favorite of the electric screwdrivers. A big value of the gyro is being able to hold it in awkward positions and still get it to work one-handed. If you play with it a bit you can also switch it into pistol mode with one hand. The clutch allows you to approximate a certain torque for fine screws (think PC parts, RC cars) and it's still powerful enough to drive in sheet metal screws. In general it's also a good option when you DON'T want an impact that could risk stripping or over-torquing a fastener.

I think you meant well, but this comparison fails. Cordless screwdrivers should be showcased doing things someone might do with an unpowered screwdriver. No one on Planet Earth except maybe Chuck Norris is sinking Torx bits into tree trunks using a screwdriver and no pilot hole. You should have shown normal tasks, such as replacing outlet covers, Christmas toy assembly, drawer handle tightening, and other household tasks that normally call for an unpowered screwdriver.
@projectpinehills Жыл бұрын
I agree. From that perspective yes, it is not what you’d use it for though many people talk about the high torque of the DeWalt Gyro. I was trying to show the difference in torque. But it was made clear it wasn’t a typical use. Thanks for commenting!
@tgreening10 ай бұрын
This comparison does not “fail”. Why compare this unit, or any similar, to a standard screwdriver? Everyone knows what you can do with a regular screwdriver, and it’s “torque” is limited to whatever the user can apply. I say it’s very appropriate to demonstrate what kind of torque these can apply.

I've dabbled in cheapo cordless screwdrivers and finally pulled the trigger on the Dewalt. This thing is the real deal. Faster RPM's than anything else I've used (those long electrical outlet machine screws were painful with a cheap slow unit). The gyroscope motor was extremely intuitive and had it figured out after a screw or 2. Impressed and in love after a day of changing recepticals and switches.

When we got this one at work I thought the gyroscopic motion would be a gimmick, but it feels so natural in any position you use it. It's very easy to operate with one hand, so you can use the other hand for holding things up. I was able to mount quite heavy light fixtures with this solo. That would usually be a 2 man job.

I'm not a DeWalt fan, but my 20ish year old DeWalt screwdriver still works. Batts need replacing, and are not cheap. Picked up a Metabo/HPT because is was on sale at Lowe's and I like their stuff. The Metabo and the Milwakee version (not the Surge in this video) look identical. Having said that, DeWalt has a winner here for this class of tool. The gyro is interesting, tho I'd probably come to love it. The handle and the ring light on the front are excellent design choices. Also, the trigger control is way better than the F/R side switch on the Metabo and Milw. The Milw Surge is a sweet tool, and the M12 battery options (big and small) is a great feature of the M12 series. Now, if there were a universal form factor for batteries . . .

I know I’m in the minority, but I found the gyroscopic speed control on the DeWalt frustrating to use. I use my screwdriver for gunsmithing and most of my screws are hex head (Allen bits) or Torx. I find that I often need to rotate the tool to line the bit up for engagement, which put it in an awkward position once I rotated it further to actually turn the unit on to rotate the screw and reach full speed (for disassembly). The handle would be almost 90 degrees (or more) from my start position once I aligned the unit with the screw and then rotated it for full speed. So you either start out of position and rotate to somewhere more neutral, or you start in a neutral position and rotate to something out of position. It’s built well and powerful, but I’m planning to try the Milwaukee since it operates more like a conventional electric drill. I’ll keep the DeWalt around the house since it is a good tool.

The DeWalt is worth the money. One of the best tools I’ve used. The gyroscope is well made and responsive. You can fasten or loosen screws quickly or slowly depending on your natural hand motion. It also has a lock, so you can use it like a normal screwdriver without worrying about it going off. One advantage I don’t think you mentioned is the DeWalt can take any Impact bit, so you really just need the bits and this one device to do everything you want with fasteners. Overall, I’m honestly kind of shocked Milwaukee and Makita haven’t made their own gyroscopics. Even DeWalt seems to be on the fence about it now somehow. It’s a different battery line, but this tool has a strong niche in the sub-Impact, save-on-weight-and-space market that I guarantee does exist. No one knows this thing exists though, that’s the problem. I show it to guys at work and they have no idea what it even is.
@farronkelly78998 ай бұрын
Also worth noting, where a lot of jobs will mandate that you can’t/shouldn’t even use Impacts on finishing projects, this tool has gotten me approval from foremen. Since you can control the speed easily, unlike the Impact there or at all with the Craftsman, you can comfortably use it to save your wrists while not damaging screwheads.

I tried others but nothing compared to Milwaukee 4v screwdriver, unfortunately pricy at $150+ but worth it. I also have the Milwaukee m12 screwdriver for other jobs. You have to be careful with an impact driver that might strip the screw. I also have the Milwaukee 12v screwdriver for more torque than 4v.

This wasn't a review of the tool used for its intended purpose. Are you driving screws into wood? Use an impact driver. Are you looking for a tool to take the place of a manual screwdriver? Assembling furniture, electrical work, fine trim work? That's what a power screwdriver is great for. It's along the lines of chucking a torx bit in an SDS-max rotary hammer and seeing if you can drive a desk screw in with it, then stating it would work better if you could turn off the hammer part.

So you just end up buying more tools, which is very counterproductive. I just want one that can deliver the unparalleled power and torque that no matter what you are trying to accomplish. It is there ready to deliver it.
