Don't forget that Truman desegregated the Armed Forces in 1948. George Wallace was in the Alabama house of representatives at that time, and became Alabama governor in 1962. Wallace seemed to be running a Dixiecrat campaign in 1968, just like Thurmond had done 20 years earlier.
