*) Correction: Libre 3 does allow you to share your data with others in real time through the LibreLinkUp App
Freestyle Libre 3 is now available in the US. But is it any good compared to Dexcom G6? Is it worth making the switch to a smaller sensor?
I’ve been wearing the Dexcom G6 sensor for years, and now I got my hands on a Freestyle Libre 3 sensor, so I decided to wear both at the same time to make a side-by-side comparison and give you the download.
This is my opinion on both systems, and it’s based on my experience wearing both sensors at the same time. I ranked each system on 12 different criteria and the winning system is the one I prefer… can you guess which one it is?
Please let me know if you’d like to add anything to this comparison, did I leave something out that you want to discuss? Let me know in the comments and we can add more criteria and color to the comparison.

I ended up having several months supply of both Libre 1 and Dexcom G6 at the same time. I wore both for comparison and I had the exact same issues with accuracy with Libre 1. Almost every single night the Libre said I was dangerously low while the Dexcom had me in perfect range. I did really like the Libre App though and I felt like I got all the same data I get from Dexcom Clarity except I found the Libre App better designed. I still plan to stay with Dexcom now though especially after hearing your experience. Looking forward to next year when you (hopefully) do the same review of the G7, assuming it actually gets here.

Things I like with my G6 - Every now and then I do need to extend the sensor life, and generally get 5 to 10 days additional. The G6 talks to my Tandem pump, which has the Control-IQ firmware on it, and that's been amazing for me. The reporting I get through Tandem, and it's pretty detailed, comparing my CGM readings to my IOB at any time. This helps me with my ratios. Finally, I use XDrip+ to gather my G6 data on my phone, which lets me connect my Fitbit Versa 3 watch to monitor my glucose readings. I've customized a watch face (there are other free ones available) to tell me what my G6 is reporting, where that number is going, etc. For me, personally, being able to just glance at my glucose when I'm out taking a walk, or when I was working, was extremely helpful. Because the G6 can talk to both my pump and my phone at the same time, I have control both automatically and manually. As you point out, the Libre doesn't yet play with other apps. That alone would be a killer. While the every minute readings would be nice, my experience is that the 15 minute Dexcom window is enough for me.

Thanks for the comparison 👍🙏 Small tip on the sensor errors on the Libre 2: they are often caused by skin dehydration, i.e. “you need to drink some”. Easy to solve with some isotonic sports drink or simply tea 👍👍 As for experience: haven’t tried the Libre 3 yet but I like the Libre 2 sensor combined with the Shuggah app (for iphone). That gives me the detailed customizable readings, exact graphs, and smartwatch integration. It’s a techy solution but definitely worth looking into 😉

Your comments on accuracy was spot on. Though my daughter has the Libre 2. It was more accurate than the Dexcom when we used it for a week. Issues we had was she would always leave her phone away from her person so connecting back with the sensor was always a wait. But now that we are switching to the Omnipod 5 we will go to the Dexcom. The compatibility with other systems/apps is many times better than Libre.

The main reason for me to switch from Libre 2 to G6 is one thing you mentioned, the interval between presented measurings, one minute and five minutes respectively. I think that Dexcom measures every minute as well, but uses those five measures to present a curve which is a bit more rounded and calm. I find the Libre to be a bit stressful with its spiky nature. As you said, your reaction to a high and fast increasing bloodsugar would be to correct with insulin, and I've done that several times, gotten low, and when I look at the curve afterwards there's no high at all. After a few years with Libre 2 I'm a little better at waiting a bit before I correct, but it's still hard to know when to wait and when to act. I have an appointment tomorrow to discus the matter with a nurse.

Here in Australia my diabetes educator is saying that the Libre CGM is suggested more for Type 2 diabetics and the Dexcom more for Type 1. Love the idea with the Libre having the transmitter built into the sensor but I believe the Dexcom G7 is the same with a smaller sensor than the G6. I'm happy with my G6 5 min intervals and I feel that 1 min intervals is a bit of overkill.

I'd say if your Libre sensor only went offline once in its 14 days, you're doing well. And yes, the Libre is alarmist in the extreme. Their prediction algorithm is way, way too agressive and it "rewrites history" afterwards when it realises it got it wrong. If it gets it REALLY wrong, it detects it and decides to go offline again for some reason, presumably to recalibrate. I wish they had the option to just see the raw figures - I'd have more confidence then

@DiabetesStrong Жыл бұрын
Restarting the sensor won't work every time. I do it occasionally but know some people do it with pretty much every sensor (This video shows how to restart it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gV7MgnefaZmIfrc). Calibration simply means that you override the sensor by adding a manual glucose reading. The sensor will adjust based on the number you enter. The rule of thumb is that it's considered accurate +/-20 mg/dl but that if it's off with more than, and blood sugars aren't changing rapidly, you could do a calibration
@fuchsbau2768
@fuchsbau2768 Жыл бұрын
@@DiabetesStrong Thanks, I really do like the idea of being able to calibrate the sensor with finger sticks, with my experience with the Libre 2 is it either going to be accurate (+/-) 20 for the duration of wearing after the first 12hrs or it’s going to be wildly inaccurate (+/-) 50 or more for the duration of wearing. It really makes it almost impossible to sleep at night when it’s alerts you constantly for a 55 reading only for you to finger stick and your sitting at 110. I only went with the Libre 2 because it was covered under my insurance (70$) for 3 months, at that time, 6 months ago, my insurance would only cover the sensors for the G6 (50$) for 3 months but they would not cover the transmitter (270+) per transmitter. Why cover one and not the other when it requires both to be used, good ole insurance company illogical thinking. Thanks for the info. Just recently checked and now my insurance will cover both for 100$ for 3 months, thinking about switching to G6 after my current prescription runs out.

I restart my g6 every time so i get 20 days. Once and a while the sensor goes south after 1 and 1/2 session. If you use a piece of tegiderm over your sensor it helps keep it on and clean. To restart you have to remove the transmitter for 10 min restart and reinstall the transmitter. You will need to keep the sensor code to restart. I love the g6 app simple and the option of seeing 1 hour graph is awsome. On the 2nd session i always calibrate to be on the safe side. Good luck. I have no intention to switch. I have a medtronic pump, their cgm that talks to it looks like a nightmare. Not interested in that one for sure but the pump works great.

In all of these comparison videos do we ever weigh in the fact that Dexcom essentially perfected how cgm works, and is probably the greatest advancement in diabetes since injecting insulin? Or that the competition is devaluing the product while trying to be as good as Dexcom? I have sat in rooms back when it was the Libre 10 day and the Dexcom G5 and listened to Abb say there were better because they stayed on for 10 days. We should revisit a comparison of those two and then take into account what they "think" is better. Stick with the company trying to improve lives. Not the one trying to get in on the money. Or just take a look at what they did to the test strip industry.

I am looking forward to the new omnipod g6 semi closed loop system. Keep in mind that I've lived with type 1 for 36 years without any diabetic complications. I'm very aggressive with my control. Dexcom G6 is only usable on a small number of mobile phones. Android 11 is required. The new versions are not supported. An operating system that is 2 1/2 years old is not optimal and certainly no longer secure. It is also currently almost impossible to find a new smartphone on the market that comes with Android 11. I have to borrow the Dexcom reader for a fee (it is difficult or impossible to get a reimbursement from the health insurance company). Using an older device also fails because it is no longer supported. G6 is therefore currently unusable. Freestyle Libre 3 also works with Android 13 and many devices.

Absolutely hated Libre2 and Libre3. It was NEVER accurate. 2 months into Dexcom 6 and love it. Would be interested in your thoughts of Dexcom 7
