Tyler if you are ever going to be a great player, you MUST learn rudiments. Not all of them really apply to drum set, though, but you really need to be good at double strokes, single strokes, paradiddles, and some flams. You may not need to get in to the flam drags or some of the more advanced flam rudiments, but you really need to get good at the basic rudiments. Learning these on your own in nearly all cases results in bad habits. I would suggest getting a good teacher, in person, to work with you. Good luck. I do have some videos on learning the double stroke roll that you might find helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2GnhKFpi8p9fZI and kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXrSd5qMls2LeqM

@tootallforbaseball5 жыл бұрын
You don't use finger technique with double stroke rolls. That just creates more problems, and should only be used to get you from a point where you play "to" the drum to a point where you play "through" the drum. I demonstrate this here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2GnhKFpi8p9fZI
@kaim.84625 жыл бұрын
@@tootallforbaseball don't know what you mean. 1st stroke from the wrist, 2nd from the fingers works fine, doesn't it? as you do in the video, 2nd stroke from the fingers? greets
@tootallforbaseball5 жыл бұрын
Kai M. No, a double stroke roll uses BOUNCE strokes, not finger strokes at all. The fingers just stay on the stick, but you play through the drum. Watch my video. I explain that in depth, and I demonstrate it.
@kaim.84625 жыл бұрын
@@tootallforbaseball Yes, i already watched ;) and i know what you mean. But your first comment does not make sense to me. You also use your fingers for the 2nd stroke in the video (28.24 for example). In my oppinion it's nothing else like DEX STAR DRUMMER described in his video. But maybe it's because of my bad english
@tootallforbaseball5 жыл бұрын
Kai M. You do not use one stroke with wrist and the second with the fingers AT ALL. I do not use finger control and did not demonstrate that with the exception of the shuffle beat. A shuffle beat is not a bounce. You may have to use fingers on a floor tom only because the rebound is poor. This guy is just wasting motion and won’t get even doubles by using fingers. You only use wrist and bounce with a double stroke roll. There is no need to snap your fingers to get even strokes. You have to break your wrist a little more to get the two strokes even. All good players use ONLY wrist for an even double stroke roll. Dex Star will not be able to play an even roll the way he is playing, period.

@@BeardedLad89 pay me, haha. To be quick about it, he is very sloppy. Bad wrist/arm positioning, barely holding onto the sticks, fingers are "flying", his second note of each diddle is way softer than the first note. He is "dropping" the notes, as opposed to "placing" the notes. Meaning, he is not playing clean 16tg notes. If he was playing to a metronome with 16th note subdivions, you would hear how bad it is.

You know, of all things, juggling has helped my discipline when learning this stuff. Juggling three balls starts with just throwing one ball up and down for 5-15 minutes or until you feel comfortable and then going to your other hand. Then you add in the second ball and just go throw, throw, to opposite hands, and then eventually you add the third ball in and I feel like that has helped me as I start my practice pad work this week. Not just on rhythm of catches and throws, hand-eye coordination, but on learning that you should spend time dedicated to each rudiment every day and start slow just as you showed at the start of this. After a month of about 30 minutes every other day I can three ball juggle until the cows come home, this is foundation and has already helped me as I start juggling two balls with one hand in prep for four ball juggling. Why did I mention this here? Because I feel like we always forget the stepping stones and how much time we should dedicate to them like rudiments in drumming. Not only do we become better for doing it, we see improvement faster than anyone not doing them, and we learn a real love and appreciate for the dedication which will inspire us to keep going. This was really cool, sorry for the off topic juggling example but I feel it plays into any lesson. Practice, practice, practice, and it makes learning how to do it for real quicker, easier, and more fun.

For people with disabilities who want to learn to play or continue to play is they have arthritis, cerebral palsy, stroke, limb loss or limb differences, etc. that reduce or take away thumb grip, would you suggest playing with an assistive grip device, or do you have experience with them? Grips like a Universal Cuff or a Silicone EazyHold cuff? Thank you.

For everyone watching this as new to Doubles as I am. I noticed that practicing with the pad is absolutely necessary, I feel that you will get a better understanding of the diddle technique if you try it softly on your snare. Tighten the head, and listen to how the snare picks up the roll naturally. If you are experience with singles, you will already have proper enough hand control to at least control the subtle bounces (diddle), so you will be able to hear it, or see it. You will not be able to go louder yet, that’s where the experience and difficulty comes it to play. But with a snare rattle ... if you just want to get a preview of what it should sound like .. try the diddle technique on the snare. Then practice those hand controls on the pad. This was positive reinforcement for me.

Marc Revetta yes I’m on instagram/dexstardrummer. My oldest student was 92 so don’t let age ever get you down! The toughest part is sitting down behind the drums, once you’re there, that’s when the good stuff can happen. Just getting time behind the kit, getting hours under your belt, making a practice habit. It’s about $25.89 at the current exchange rate. Please let me know when you’d like a lesson, there’s no pressure from the lesson, just go through a plan to help you improve and I’ll signpost you along the way! Thanks again!

This rudiment used to also be played on 16th notes, same as single stroke roll, and paradiddle, the best way to get to higher speeds on double stroke roll is drop and catch, which is what Rob Brown showed in his video on how to fix your weak doubles.
